  98.                          of the 1987-88 Schools and Staffing
  99.                          Survey (SASS) teacher sample.
  100.                          It was conducted by the U. S. Bureau
  101.                          of the Census to update data on teacher
  102.                          career patterns and plans.  The TFS is a
  103.                          subsample (6,763 respondents) of
  104.                          public and private school teachers
  105.                          in the profession during school
  106.                          year 1987-88.  Of the 6,763
  107.                          teachers, 4,540 were currently
  108.                          teaching, and 2,223 were former
  109.                          teachers.  Survey data in the
  110.                          1987-88 SASS are included as
  111.                          classification variables for
  112.                          analysis of the TFS data.  In
  113.                          addition to the information
  114.                          provided on the 1987-88 SASS
  115.                          teacher sample, data on teachers'
  116.                          employment and teaching status,

  292.                          descriptive characteristics of the
  293.                          class/course; (3) their own
  294.                          background characteristics
  295.                          particularly pertinent to
  296.                          teaching; and (4) their
  297.                          assessments of school climate in
  298.                          the NELS:88 school.  Similar to
  299.                          the school component data file,
  300.                          this data file is intended to
  301.                          provide contextual data for
  302.                          analyses that use individual
  303.                          students as the unit of analysis.
  304.                          Each record of this file contains
  305.                          data provided by a teacher for a
  306.                          particular student-teacher pair in
  307.                          a specific subject matter area
  308.                          (e.g., mathematics).  The total
  309.                          number of records is 27,994,
  310.                          representing one to two student-
  311.                          teacher pair records for each of
  312.                          15,908 of the 18,221 students who
  313.                          participated in the NELS:88 First
  314.                          Followup Student Survey.  (NCES

  328.                          institutions for 1990.  The tape
  329.                          contains data for 2,472
  330.                          noncollegiate postsecondary
  331.                          institutions responding to the CN
  332.                          survey.  These schools represent
  333.                          the universe of 6,284 institutions
  334.                          on the IPEDS file that do not
  335.                          qualify as being either 1)
  336.                          accredited at the college level by
  337.                          an agency recognized by the
  338.                          Secretary of the U.S. Department
  339.                          of Education; or 2) not accredited
  340.                          but that grant a bachelor's,
  341.                          master's, doctor's, or first-
  342.                          professional degree.  The file
  343.                          includes information on fall
  344.                          enrollment for 1990, 1989-90
  345.                          completions data, FY 90 financial
  346.                          data, and 1990 library statistics.
  347.                          The 1990 survey year was the first
  348.                          time the CN form was used to
  349.                          collect data from this segment of
  350.                          the IPEDS universe.

  359.                          questionnaire data collected from
  360.                          1,043 dropouts who left school
  361.                          between the eighth and tenth
  362.                          grades.  Each record contains

  364.                          collected from dropouts, and
  365.                          covering several areas, including:
  366.                          school experiences and activities;
  367.                          reasons for leaving school;
  368.                          program participation; course-
  369.                          taking patterns; absenteeism;
  370.                          actions taken by the school,
  371.                          parents, and friends in response
  372.                          to a respondent's decision to drop
  373.                          out; the respondent's assessment
  374.                          of the likelihood of returning to,
  375.                          and graduating from high school;
  376.                          experiences after dropping out;
  377.                          current activities and future
  378.                          plans.  (NCES plans to have this
  379.                          file available in November 1992.)

  394.                          knowledgeable parents or
  395.                          guardians, is contained on the
  396.                          files (7,655 on the Preprimary;
  397.                          6,237 on the Primary).  The ECE
  398.                          component is a source of
  399.                          information on child care and
  400.                          early childhood program
  401.                          experiences, kindergarten and
  402.                          primary school entry, retention in
  403.                          early grades, parental involvement
  404.                          in center-based programs and
  405.                          schools, the education environment
  406.                          in the home, and household and

  416.                          contains information on 12,568
  417.                          persons, 16 years of age and
  418.                          older, not enrolled full time in
  419.                          high school at the time of the
  420.                          interview.  Of these, 9,774 were
  421.                          participants in adult education
  422.                          activities, i.e., had participated
  423.                          in at least one educational
  424.                          activity in the 12 months prior to
  425.                          the interview; 2,794 were
  426.                          nonparticipants.  The AE component
  427.                          covers these topics:
  428.                          participation in adult education
  429.                          activities in the past year, the
  430.                          past three years, and ever;
  431.                          characteristics of adult education
  432. <{                         courses or activities, including:
  433.                          course title, basic skills and
  434.                          training content, degree
  435.                          requirement fulfillment, sponsor,
  436.                          employer involvement, payment
  437.                          source, and others; perceived
  438.                          benefits of participation in adult
  439.                          education for both participants
  440.                          and nonparticipants; perceived
  441.                          barriers to participation in adult
  442.                          education for both part-time
  443.                          participants and nonparticipants;
  444.                          and, background characteristics of
  445.                          participants and nonparticipants.

  451. Note: (**) Conducted between late January and early May of 1991,
  452. the 1991 National  Household Education Survey (NHES:91) was a
  453. random digit dial telephone survey of households.  Just over
  454. 60,000 households participated in the initial screening interview
  455. of the NHES:91 which covered two topical components:  Early
  456. Childhood Education (ECE) and Adult Education (AE).  Data in each
  457. component have been weight to provide estimates representative
  458. of the noninstitutionalized civilian population of the United
  459. States.
