- followup can be used in conducting
- national studies in many areas,
- including (a) students' academic

- community, school, and classroom
- factors that promote or inhibit
- such growth; (b) the process of
- dropping out of school, as it
- occurs from the eighth grade on;
- (c) school experiences and
- academic performances of language
- minority students; and (d)
- profiling the nation's tenth-

-
-
- 3. Survey Area: NELS:88 School Data
-
- Years Available: 1990
-
- Description: Please see Longitudinal Studies of
- the previous edition of the Directory.
- This first followup file contains
- survey data collected in 1990 from
- 1,291 school administrators. This
- file provides information about
- the characteristics of the schools
- attended by 17,633 participating

-
-
- 4. Survey Area: NELS:88 Teacher Data
-
- Years Available: 1990
-
- Description: Please see Longitudinal Studies of
- the previous edition of the Directory.
- The teacher component data file
- contains questionnaire data
- collected from 9,987 teachers who
- were asked to provide four types
- of information: (1) their
- evaluation of the learning and
- performance of one or more NELS:88
- participating students; (2)
- descriptive characteristics of the
- class/course; (3) their own
- background characteristics
- particularly pertinent to
- teaching; and (4) their
- assessments of school climate in
- the NELS:88 school. Similar to
- the school component data file,
- this data file is intended to
- provide contextual data for
- analyses that use individual
- students as the unit of analysis.
- Each record of this file contains
- data provided by a teacher for a
- particular student-teacher pair in
- a specific subject matter area
- (e.g., mathematics). The total
- number of records is 27,994,
- representing one to two student-
- teacher pair records for each of
- 15,908 of the 18,221 students who
- participated in the NELS:88 First
- Followup Student Survey. (NCES
- plans to have this file available
- in December 1992.)

- statistics for the nation's
- noncollegiate postsecondary
- institutions for 1990. The tape
- contains data for 2,472

- the universe of 6,284 institutions
- on the IPEDS file that do not
- qualify as being either 1)
- accredited at the college level by
- an agency recognized by the
- Secretary of the U.S. Department
- of Education; or 2) not accredited
- but that grant a bachelor's,
- master's, doctor's, or first-
- professional degree. The file
- includes information on fall
- enrollment for 1990, 1989-90
- completions data, FY 90 financial
- data, and 1990 library statistics.

- time the CN form was used to
- collect data from this segment of
- the IPEDS universe.
-
-
- 2. Survey Area: NELS:88 Dropout Data
-
- Years Available: 1990
-
- Description: The first followup dropout
- component data file contains

- information (570 variables)
- collected from dropouts, and
- covering several areas, including:
- school experiences and activities;
- reasons for leaving school;
- program participation; course-
- taking patterns; absenteeism;
- actions taken by the school,
- parents, and friends in response
- to a respondent's decision to drop
- out; the respondent's assessment
- of the likelihood of returning to,
- and graduating from high school;
- experiences after dropping out;
- current activities and future
- plans. (NCES plans to have this

- 3. Survey Area: National Household Education Survey (**)
- Component)
-
- Years Available: 1991
-
- Description: Data from the ECE component are
- provided in two separate, but

- Preprimary File and the Primary

- obtained from the most
- knowledgeable parents or
- guardians, is contained on the
- files (7,655 on the Preprimary;
- 6,237 on the Primary). The ECE
- component is a source of
- information on child care and
- early childhood program
- experiences, kindergarten and
- primary school entry, retention in
- early grades, parental involvement
- in center-based programs and
- schools, the education environment
- in the home, and household and
- family characteristics.

-
-
- Note: (**) Conducted between late January and early May of 1991,
- the 1991 National Household Education Survey (NHES:91) was a
- random digit dial telephone survey of households. Just over
- 60,000 households participated in the initial screening interview
- of the NHES:91 which covered two topical components: Early
- Childhood Education (ECE) and Adult Education (AE). Data in each
- component have been weight to provide estimates representative
- of the noninstitutionalized civilian population of the United
- States.
