- I agree with Alan Davis that we need to use what we already have for
- assessment in higher ed., rather than add an evaluation that might "drive"
- the curriculum. In response to assessment some institutions have added
- exit exams or capstone courses. While there is some merit to each of
- these, there are also problems associated with them. In a communitycollege
- many of our programs are already heavily burdened with required courses that
- are taken at the expense of electives. A capstone course would have to be
- added at the expense of another course most likely an elective. Many of our
- students complain about the narrowing of the curriculum. Exit exams are
- suggested by outside agencies. I worry how these exams would affect our
- mission.
- Michael Knight of Kean College, N.J. sugggests a departmental response to
- assessment. At Kean, each program develops a profile of what a graduate of
- the program should look like. When a student hands in work, an exam or a
- paper, the instructor can make a copy and send it to the department
- assessment committee, without name, to be held up against the graduate profile.
-
- When multiple examples are used the program can construct a scattergram to
- see how their students are doig. The program can use this information to make
- needed changes.
- This seems to be a more useful and appropriate form of assessment. Does anyone
- know of other assessment plans?
