  25. The definition of "wolf-like animal" is required because there are
  26. serious policy (read: political) implications depending upon whether the
  27. animal is actually a wolf as apposed to some wolf-dog or wolf-cayote
  28. hybrid.  If the animal is a pure Grey Wolf that has moved into the
  29. Yellowstone ecosystem, e.g. from Canada, Montana or Central Idaho where
  30. they currently inhabit, then wolf recovery in Yellowstone can be expected
  31. to take place by natural recolonization, with full protection under the
  32. Endangered Species Act.  Alternatively, if wolves are not recolonizing,
  33. then the agencies will push to proceed with their Wolf Reintroduction
  34. Plan, which involves reintroduction, but, at the expense of full
  35. protection since the animals would be classified as an experimental
  36. population subject to management (read: killing) if they wander outside
  37. of the Park or cause "problems".

  39. So, just because it looks like a wolf and acts like a wolf, it is only
  40. wolf-like.  The DNA testing was supposed to answer this question,
  41. however, it seems that this previously reliable, definitive and
  42. frequently used classification technology has suddenly come up short. I
  43. for one would like to see the test results for myself.
