- On Monday, December 21,1992, after lengthy debate with his employees, Carl
- Rosier, the head of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, used his executive
- powers to halt the planned wolf hunt, finally giving in to pressure. Governor
- Wally Hickel approved his action. In effect, he over-rode the decision of the
- Board of Game, which had been planning to meet in January. I am not sure if
- this means that the hunt is off for good for 1993 or if it is simply a post-
- ponement, though it sounds like the former. Rosier stated that Alaska cannot
- ignore the perceptions of the public in other states. The Wolf Summit is still
- scheduled to happen in Fairbanks in mid-January. This whole affair has been
- called a public relations disaster for Alaska, second only to the Exxon Valdez.
