  19. Well...  Tolkien's English publisher, George Allen & Unwin, neglected to
  20. obtain the USA copyright for _LotR_ when it was originally published in the
  21. mid-50s.  As I have related here before, Ace Books took advantage of this
  22. error.  Tolkien, Houghton-Mifflin and Ballantine brought out a *revised*
  23. version of _LotR_ in the mid-60s.

  25. So...  The original _LotR_ is still uncovered by copyright protection.  If
  26. someone were very brave, very studious, etc., s/he could transcribe the
  27. original version.  It's only about 100,000 words long.

  29. _The Hobbit_ never had this problem, although Tolkien revised this one
  30. also.  Legally, no one can transcribe this book.  At least until the
  31. copyright runs out.
