- Well... Tolkien's English publisher, George Allen & Unwin, neglected to
- obtain the USA copyright for _LotR_ when it was originally published in the
- mid-50s. As I have related here before, Ace Books took advantage of this
- error. Tolkien, Houghton-Mifflin and Ballantine brought out a *revised*
- version of _LotR_ in the mid-60s.

- So... The original _LotR_ is still uncovered by copyright protection. If
- someone were very brave, very studious, etc., s/he could transcribe the
- original version. It's only about 100,000 words long.

- _The Hobbit_ never had this problem, although Tolkien revised this one
- also. Legally, no one can transcribe this book. At least until the
- copyright runs out.
