  10. I am a five year paramedic working for Shepard LifeFleet in Tacoma, WA. 
  11. I am also a strong Union advocate.  Due to the recent budget crisis
  12. nation wide, we here in the Pacific Northwest are seeing the fire
  13. department expand into areas of ALS and patient transport traditionally
  14. help by my company, forcing people out of work.

  16. What is most sad is the fire dept. is singing to the public of
  17. unanswered 911 calls and babies burning if the public does not approve
  18. their special levy.  What they are not telling them is that they will
  19. have to wait for a fire department paramedic unit to come even though a
  20. much closer and qualified private ambulance is closer, AND that they
  21. will not only increase taxes, but charge you a TRANSPORT FEE on
  22. top....usually more than a private carrier.  If it sounds like a
  23. political nightmare, IT IS......

  25. It would not be as bad if the private carrier was doing a bad job, but
  26. we are not...LifeFleet is a well respected organization and we find we
  27. can acutally do a better and CHEAPER job than the fire dept. 
  28.  It seems they are trying to justify their existence by taking over 
  29. EMS, regardless of the patient care or cost factors.

  31. My question is this....I hear this is a nation wide trend....Are there
  32. any other areas in which the fire dept. is trying to get into the
  33. ambulance business OR are there any other areas where they are trying to
  34. get OUT of the transport business?
