- I am a five year paramedic working for Shepard LifeFleet in Tacoma, WA.
- I am also a strong Union advocate. Due to the recent budget crisis
- nation wide, we here in the Pacific Northwest are seeing the fire
- department expand into areas of ALS and patient transport traditionally
- help by my company, forcing people out of work.
-
- What is most sad is the fire dept. is singing to the public of
- unanswered 911 calls and babies burning if the public does not approve
- their special levy. What they are not telling them is that they will
- have to wait for a fire department paramedic unit to come even though a
- much closer and qualified private ambulance is closer, AND that they
- will not only increase taxes, but charge you a TRANSPORT FEE on
- top....usually more than a private carrier. If it sounds like a
- political nightmare, IT IS......
-
- It would not be as bad if the private carrier was doing a bad job, but
- we are not...LifeFleet is a well respected organization and we find we
- can acutally do a better and CHEAPER job than the fire dept.
- It seems they are trying to justify their existence by taking over
- EMS, regardless of the patient care or cost factors.
-
- My question is this....I hear this is a nation wide trend....Are there
- any other areas in which the fire dept. is trying to get into the
- ambulance business OR are there any other areas where they are trying to
- get OUT of the transport business?
