- Gary, just wanted to say I agree with what you said, and
- most of it applies over here in these neck of the woods.
- (upstate NY) We usually didn't have a problem with the
- actual photographers, it was the "right up" the paper
- printed. My shift had one of the best firehouse cooks <g>
- and a local photographer usually dined with us. We had a
- pretty good working relationship with him, and he pretty
- much respected our boundaries. (guess it's true... the way
- to a man's heart is through his stomach <g>) Seriously
- though, you made some very good points. Too often, a good
- public relations' program is ignored, or often non-
- existent. I had a partner who taught me to spend a few
- minutes talking and visiting with the ER Nurses and Docs,
- maybe if it was quiet and usually later, we'd bring the
- doughnuts to go with their coffee they offered us. It gave
- us a chance to "network" with them. The FD administration
- just took it as we were goofing off, and didn't want to
- hear any explanations. We were in service, but they
- didn't like it, so we usually did it very late at night.
-
- But the paper on the other hand, is anti Police and FD, as
- far as support goes. Our union has tried to work with
- them, but they like to "sensationalize" the events into
- more money generating sales, which usually happens to mean
- bash the cops and ffs, as the general public seems to feel
- we are overpaid, and underworked. Unless there's a big
- fire, or crime incident, we are heros for about a week and
- half. I know this sounds bitter, but it's the way it is
- here. I've accepted it as the nature of the beast we
- serve, but still don't like it.
