  27.               BP BOYCOTT NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION!

  32.     By now, you've probably heard of the BP BOYCOTT, a
  33. part of Ohio's corporate accountability campaign of British
  34. Petroleum.  In an attempt to unite campus environmental groups
  35. aroung the state and in an effor to build a livale future, BP is
  36. targeted for its pollution record and practices.  SEACers have
  37. struggled to mobilize a powerful force of grassroots pressure to
  38. demand that BP be more responsible both socially and
  39. ecologically.

  41.                  WHAT'S SO BAD ABOUT BP?...Take your pick...
  42.  
  43. 1. BP produces 5 times more toxics per $1000 sale than the oil
  44.    industry's average.
  45.  
  46. 2. BP ranks as the largest polluter in Ohio, the 4th largest
  47.    polluter in the United States, and the 3rd largest polluter
  48.    of toxic waste on Earth.
  49.  
  50. 3. BP is leading the charge to open up the Arctic National
  51.    Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling.
  52.  
  53. 4. BP is the 2nd largest oil company fueling the Apartheid
  54.    government in South Africa.
  55.  
  56. 5. BP is the majority owner of Alyeska, the consortium of oil
  57.    companies responsible for the botched cleanup of the Exxon
  58.    Valdez oil spill.
  59.  
  60. 6. BP fueled the Persian Gulf War.
  61.  
  62. 7. BP refuses to comply with the MacBride principles, which
  63.    assure fair hiring practices of Irish workers in Ireland.
  64.  
  65. 8. In Brazil, BP has been criticized for destroying several
  66.    thousand acres of rainforest.  BP has also been charged with
  67.    rainforest destruction in Southeast Asia.

  69. The campaign has been growing and now several groups around
  70. the country have shown interest in expanding the Boycott to
  71. a National scale.  In response, Ohio SEAC is organizing Toxic
  72. Tuesday on November 10 as a Day of Action on which grassroots
  73. environmental groups can join the Boycott with actions such as
  74. station pickets.  All that is needed to participate in Toxic
  75. Tuesday is a free afternoon, some facts sheets, and the desire
  76. to bring Corporate America's pollution habits into the
  77. spotlight.

  79. SUGGESTED ACTIONS FOR TOXIC TUESDAY:

  82. -Teach-ins
  83. -Guerrilla Theater (toxic suits)
  84. -Go carless
  85. -Have a local politician pledge to boycott BP
  86. -Cut up a BP credit card.  Send the leftovers to BP and tell them what
  87.   you think
  88. -Invent your own toxic tuesday actions.
