  13. I am a blind student, here at Yale, who is realizing that my current computing
  14. environment will not be powerful enough for my needs at graduate school, which
  15. I expect to attend for the next four-six years.  My primary need (in terms of
  16. high-speed computing), is for a machine which can carry out OCR (optical
  17. character recognition), quickly and efficiently.  I have been scanning up to
  18. 10,000 pages of material per semester while I have been here, and think it
  19. likely that this will increase markedly at grad school.  I don't have the time
  20. to lose on scanning while I'm there, but I do need the ability to do my own
  21. scanning, depending on the technology available at whatever university I
  22. finally end up attending.  It appears that my needs may outstrip the quadra
  23. line of macintoshes (both currently available, and expected in the next six
  24. months), which suggests to me the need to look toward either an aux-based
  25. macintosh environment or a straight unix machine such as a small spark station,
  26. or the new DEC machines.
  27. My questions are:
  28. 1.  What OCR software is available for unix-based computers?
  29. 2.  Are there good speech synthesizers available for these machines, and if so,
  30. are they hardware-or-software based?
  31. 3.  What kind of money am I looking at spending for a computer able to
  32. outperform the 33 MHZ-68:040-baased quadras currently available?
  33. 4.  What companies specialize in small unix-capable stations like the new DEC
  34. Alpha?
  35. Any information available out there will be *very* much appreciated, as all of
  36. my work is done on scanned material, so I need to begin trying to make as
  37. informed a decision as is possible.
