- That process was most likely irreversible. If memory serves, that program
- is really a low-level formatter specifically designed to work with Maxtor
- IDE drives.
-
- I had a similar mystical problem with a small Conner IDE. I got lots of
- "Drive not ready writing drive C:" and "Invalid media type" errors on it.
- My solution, which worked and has been repeated once, was this:
-
- FDISK the disk, one big bootable primary partition.
-
- SYS.COM it, which wrote msdos.sys and io.sys effectively, and copied
- a command.com that was 0k (and then got an error).
-
- NDD it, wich fixed bad FAT and a bjillion lost cchains. Tell it to delete
- the lost chains, because there are too many to save in the root directory.
- >
- Use Norton's DISKUTIL to "make bootable" (SYS.COM won't do it at this
- point).
-
- NDD it again to double check. should find nothing.
-
- Install DOS from original disks to write over msdos.sys and io.sys
- which are bad.
-
-
- Surprisingly enough, I found that every single one of those steps was
- required. I repeated this without success (varying the order of the
- steps and using DISKUTIL and SYS.COM in different places and found that
- only this solution worked). Now while your drive may be different
- than mine, you get the idea of the process to go through. It took me
- three hours to make a usable drive out of the one I had.
