- I think they were very accurate, and it had nothing to do with my
- opinions of their political philosophies. Reagan delegated his
- authority very well, but he was always falling asleep and muttering
- things that made it clear he had no idea where he was--and thus
- his handlers kept him under very close rein. On the plus side,
- Reagan could act the "super-dad" leader role expected of the Presidency.
- But he was obviously far away in a movie set someplace. Or are all
- the biographies off the wall?
-
- If you look at any of Quayle's public statements, it is obvious he is
- stupid. Which is consistent with his academic record as well. And
- no, I am not confusing lack of rhetorical talent with lack of
- intelligence. I think it was football all-pro Ahmad Rashad who once
- said of the Pittsburgh Steelers then-QB Terry Bradshaw, "He's so dumb
- he couldn't spell CAT if you spotted him the C and the A and the T."
- Rashad was exaggerating, of course. In Quayle's case, however...
-
- As for Bush, that may be more of a value judgement on my part.
- He has always seemed to me psychologically incapable of really being a
- leader. His choice of Quayle for VP demonstrates his own per-
- ception of the shortness of his shadow. And it was fairly obvious
- that Baker was the *real* president. There is just something
- about Bush's perpetual smirk, something about his "visceral
- reactions" (as to flag burning) and almost parody *ss-kicking
- swagger which belie a little boy continually compelled to prove
- his manhood. Bush has demonstrated neither graciousness nor warmth--
- does that make him "mean"? Perhaps not, but he certainly did not
- point to his "kinder and gentler nation" by any sort of personal example.
