  11.      I have taken to reviewing two or
  12.  more things (companies, texts,
  13.  programs, funnystuff) each month
  14.  because a monthly column can no
  15.  longer begin to keep up with all the
  16.  new GOOD stuff coming out for our
  17.  tiny marvel.
  18.      Genial TRAVelER, is a magazine
  19.  on disk for the 99.  It is a really
  20.  good buy for anyone really interested
  21.  in how our computer operates.  Wait!
  22.  That sounds boring.  
  23.      It is a dynamic, blockbuster
  24.  package of neato, peachy-keen
  25.  goodies.
  26.      
  27.      Nope.  Even that doesn't describe
  28.  what you get for your $35.  For that
  29.  small price you get six "flippy"
  30.  disks with over 700 sectors full of
  31.  games and printouts and tutorials and
  32.  ready-to-run programs and some of the
  33.  most bizarre menu configurations I've
  34.  ever seen.  These articles and
  35.  programs are by all the big guns in
  36.  the present TI world: Jim Peterson,
  37.  Barry Boone, Ron Albright, Mack
  38.  McCormick, and a cast of thousands.
  39.  And all this is edited (with a
  40.  considerable part programmed and
  41.  written by) Barry Traver (after whom
  42.  the magazine/disk is named.)
  43.      Imagine my surprise when my first
  44.  issue arrived with two disks
  45.  chock-full on both sides.  Two
  46.  chock-full disks!  The second, as
  47.  was explained with an enclosed
  48.  letter, was a surprise bonus! Not
  49.  part of my bi-monthly subscription.
  50.  A free, no-strings bonus.  
  51.      Then, when time passed and my
  52.  second disk hadn't arrived, I
  53.  received a letter telling me of the
  54.  delay and asking my patience.
  55.  Gladly.  This is the only
  56.  subscription service I've ever
  57.  belonged to that notified me of a
  58.  delay and apologized in advance for
  59.  it.
  60.      The second (or third, if you
  61.  count the bonus) disk is even better.
  62.  Then along came a fourth disk.  (I am
  63.  counting the bonus.) This disk was
  64.  also a bonus and included FUNLWRITER
  65.   with DM1000 (version 2.3) and the
  66.  new 3.0 version of DM1000 and all the
  67.  docs for all these things.
  68.      A few weeks later came their
  69.  official "third" disk (my fifth!).
  70.  And I still have three more to run on
  71.  my original subscription.  Although
  72.  it is hard to measure value in
  73.  dollars and sense (common sense), it
  74.  would be easy to put a $200 price tag
  75.  on what I have received thus far
  76.  (comparing it modestly to the similar
  77.  kinds of things being offered for the
  78.  IBM, Apple, Tandy).
  79.      And I'm certain they are all
  80.  going to get better.
  81.      (Tonight I was earlier working on
  82.  a program I wanted to use at school
  83.  and tried out the
  84.  make-your-own-cursor program from
  85.  Number Two.  And so a little smiling
  86.  face cursor grinned and blinked at me
  87.  all through my paces.  Kind of silly.
  88.  Kind of fun.)

  90.      There wouldn't be enough room to
  91.  begin to list all 300+ files on the
  92.  ten disk sides, but the variety is
  93.  great enough to please anyone with a
  94.  disk drive.  I would recommend a
  95.  printer, too, though it is not
  96.  necessary.  I particularly liked the
  97.  articles reviewing the books
  98.  available for the TI, most of which
  99.  were reviewed in these columns and
  100.  most of which agreed with my
  101.  evaluations (which is probably why I
  102.  liked them).

  104.      Because this service is so good
  105.  and so inexpensive I hope a lot of
  106.  people subscribe.  Send $35 to Barry

  123.  immediately for their latest free
  124.  catalog, if you do not already have
  125.  it.
  126.      This company's many diversified
  127.  programs have been written up in
  128.  MICROPENDIUM, SUPER 99 MONTHLY,
  129.  COMPUTE!, HOME COMPUTER MAGAZINE,
  130.  and scores of user-group magazines.
  131.  It is, justifiably, one of the
  132.  fastest-growing companies creating
  133.  new and exceptional materials for the
  134.  TI.
  135.      ASGARD's Disk Data Base program
  136.  can store up to 12,000 files on a
  137.  single disk!  Their award-winning
  138.  "Companion" programs for GraphX and
  139.  TI Artist are the standard for the TI
  140.  industry. They produced the Tunnel of
  141.  Doom Editor (and some excellent
  142.  programs to go with it, so - at last
  143.  - that cartridge has some real
  144.  value.
  145.      Their Schedule Manager is
  146.  wonderful and user-friendly and is
  147.  better than many of the highly-touted
  148.  and incredibly overpriced programs
  149.  similarly created for the IBM and
  150.  Apple.
  151.      There are also music programs and
  152.  games and utilities (like the Screen
  153.  Scroll Package) and even a light pen.
  154.      They also sell regular and
  155.  specialty papers and labels for your
  156.  printers and distribute lots of the
  157.  great stuff out by other companies.
  158.  The price range for all their own
  159.  items is between $7 and $20.
  160.  Unbeatable! And, like the Genial
  161.  TRAVelER, this company has a lot of
  162.  the TI programming biggies making
  163.  goodies exclusively for them.  
  164.      If you really want to stretch
  165.  your computer out to its full
  166.  capacity you could not do better than
  167.  invest in G.T. and ASGARD
  168.

  170.      NO-NO of the Day!  Books by
  171.  Len Turner for ARCsoft: GAMES
  172.  PROGRAMS; GRAPHICS PROGRAMS; 101 TIPS
  173.  AND TRICKS; PROGRAMS FOR HOME,
  174.  SCHOOL, AND OFFICE; and WRITING
  175.  WORKBOOK.  All could have been
  176.  condensed into one book, which would
  177.  not be bad, but each book rehashes
  178.  and takes directly from the others.
  179.  The programs and approaches are dull
  180.  and not enlightening. The prices are
  181.  high for what little is offered (up
  182.  to $9.95) on the program books, and
  183.  the WORKBOOK stinks.  Shoddy
  184.  publishing.
  185.      Some of Turner's programs are
  186.  okay and maybe he had no control over
  187.  how the books were to come out, but
  188.  one should not buy three different
  189.  books from the same publisher and
  190.  find exact same programs in each
  191.  book.
  192.      Some programs have line analysis,
  193.  some have sample runs, some have good
  194.  lead-in descriptions, some have
  195.  further options, some are efficient.
  196.  But each page is a surprise.
  197.  Unpleasant. Look over these books
  198.  before buying.
