- SUBJECT : File Rights Under NetWare 386

- GENERAL INFORMATION : Many service people have called insisting that their is
- a bug in how the rights work for files under NetWare 386. The typical scenario
- goes like this:
-
- I have a user that only has read and file scan rights in a directory but
- has all rights to a given file in that directory. When attempting to make
- changes to that file, he gets errors indicating that he does not have
- enough rights. Whats wrong?
-
- Everytime this has been reported to me, the user is attempting to modify
- the file with an editor. I have never seen an editor that does not create a
- temporary work file. The failure coming back is an attempt to create the
- temporary file. As the user lacks that rights to create in the directory,
- this is why it fails.
-
- If you wish to prove to yourself that it works, try appending to the file.
- This can be done doing a "dir >> <filename>. After completing this
- operation, you will see that the size and date have been changed meaning
- that a modification has occured.
