  12.      The WD1007A-WA2 controller is designed to interface with up to two 
  13.      ESDI compatible hard disk drives in an IBM PC AT or compatible system 
  14.      and up two 5-1/4 inch or 3-1/2 inch floppy disk drives. 
  15.      
  16.      The ESDI drives used with this controller generally have two modes of 
  17.      operation, soft sector and hard sector.  At this time, the WD1007A-
  18.      WA2 offers only the hard sector mode of operation. 
  19.      
  20.      There are two versions of the WD1007A-WA2 available.  Feature 1 
  21.      (F001) has the WD1007A BIOS which will allow low level formatting of 
  22.      ESDI type drives using DOS.  The Feature 0 (F000) does not have the 
  23.      BIOS and will work with AT type systems which have ESDI parameters in 
  24.      the system BIOS or for use with the Novell operating system.

  28.             DO NOT USE THE WD1007A-WA2 WITH MFM TYPE HARD DISK DRIVES
  29.                        USE ONLY WITH ESDI HARD DISK DRIVES

  31.      Installation of the controller requires three steps:  1) verifying 
  32.      jumper settings; 2) installing into the host computer; 3) formatting 
  33.      the hard disk drives.  To complete installation, you will need the 
  34.      following:
  35.      
  36.      Two hard disk cables (3 if using 2 hard disk drives); ESDI hard disk 
  37.      drive; floppy drive cable (daisy-chain type cable if using two floppy 
  38.      drives);screwdriver; MSDOS Version 3.3 or later; WD1007A BIOS or 
  39.      WDFMT 2.10 formatting utility;  FDISK (normally included with MSDOS).

  44.                  HANDLE THE CONTROLLER BY THE ENDS OF THE BOARD
  45.                 SOME OF THE CHIPS ARE STATIC SENSITIVE AND DAMAGE

  48.      Before you can install your WD1007A-WA2, you will need to be certain 
  49.      that the jumpers (small shorting plugs) are correctly set.  Refer to 
  50.      Table 1 for correct jumper settings.  Modification of factory jumper 
  51.      settings is rarely necessary.  Modify jumpers only under the 
  52.      direction of a qualified individual; i.e. your dealer.

  160.      sectors per track or a maximum of 1048 cylinders per drive, the 
  161.      WD1007A-WA2 provides a translation scheme so that ESDI hard disk 
  162.      drives with 34-36 sector mode operation can be fully utilized in a PC 
  163.      AT.

  165.                               Hardware Installation

  167.                                      WARNING
  168.                         MAKE SURE COMPUTER IS TURNED OFF
  169.                             AND POWER IS DISCONNECTED
  170.      
  171.      1.  Verify that your host computer has a 200 watt power supply.  If 
  172.      the disk drive(s) is(are) being installed internally, it is best to 
  173.      locate the controller in the nearest available expansion slot to the 
  174.      drive.
  175.      
  176.      2.  Remove the blank expansion slot bracket.  Put the bracket away 
  177.      and save it for possible future use.  The screw will be used to hold 
  178.      the new controller in place.
  179.      
  180.      3.  The terminating resistor must be present only on the last hard 
  181.      disk drive connected.  If there are two drives, the terminating 
  182.      resistor must be present on the second drive.  Verify proper setting 
  183.      of drive select switches for drive select 1 or 2. Refer to your 
  184.      system owner's manual for information about proper drive termination 
  185.      and select switches.  Do not use the Radial Select Option on your 
  186.      drive.

  199.      4.  Remove or disable any other floppy controller in your system when 
  200.      installing the WD1007A-WA2 controller card.

  202.      5.  Attach 34-pin control connector pin 1 to J1 on the controller 
  203.      board.  Make sure that Pin 1 of the cable connector goes to Pin 1 on 
  204.      the controller board.  Pin 1 of the cable connector is typically 
  205.      located on the color coded side of the cable.

  207.      6.   Connect control cable to drive (s).
  208.      
  209.      7.   Attach 20-pin data connector to J2 (Drive C or 0).
  210.      
  211.      8.   Attach 20-pin data connector to J3 (Drive D or 1).

  213.      9.   Connect data cables to drives.
  214.      
  215.      10.  Attach the 34-pin daisy-chain cable to J4 Connector.

  217.      11.  Connect the cable to the floppy drive(s).

  219.      12.  Attach Winchester activity LED connector to J5.

  221.      10.  Install controller board into the expansion slot. Make sure that 
  222.      the board is seated properly by pressing down on both ends of the 
  223.      board.  Secure the board with the bracket screw.

  225.                                      CAUTION
  226.                   WHEN ROUTING CABLES, BE CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH
  227.                   THEM.  CABLES MUST NOT GET CAUGHT BETWEEN THE
  228.                  COVER AND THE BOARDS, NOR SHOULD THEY OBSTRUCT
  229.                       ANY AIR FLOW PATH FROM FANS OR VENTS.
