  1. ISA BUS WORKAROUND FOR INSTALLATION PROBLEMS ON AT (ISA) BUS MACHINES
  2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  3.  
  4. CONFIGURATION: AT-bus (ISA) machine
  5.                non-SCSI disk controller (RLL, MFM, ESDI)
  6.                sometimes occurs on IDE controllers
  7.  
  8. SYMPTOMS:      Very slow install
  9.                Very noisy hard disk during install
  10.                FDISK errors
  11.                Very slow operation
  12.  
  13. There is a new driver, IBM1S506.ADD that is available on the IBM NSC BBS
  14. as well as various other non-IBM OS/2 BBS's around the country.  This new
  15. driver fixes the symptoms described above.  If you are unable to obtain the
  16. new driver, the workaround described below will alternatively allow you
  17. to install and use OS/2 2.0, however, it is recommended that you obtain
  18. the driver.
  19.  
  20. WORKAROUND BEFORE INSTALLATION:
  21. ------------------------------
  22. Step 1:  Use DOS to edit the CONFIG.SYS on Diskette 1 in the 2.0 package.
  23.          NOTE:  Diskette 1 is the first diskette AFTER the Install diskette.

  25.          Change the line -
  26.  
  27.             BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
  28.                  to
  29.             REM BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
  30.  
  31.    Alternate to Step 1 Above:
  32.    --------------------------
  33.          If you don't have access to DOS OR do not have a DOS editor to
  34.          edit the CONFIG.SYS, as an alternate to editing the CONFIG.SYS
  35.          file on Diskette 1, you may follow these steps:
  36.  
  37.             a)  Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A
  38.             b)  Turn on the computer.  If the computer is already on, press
  39.                 and hold Ctrl+Alt and press Del to restart the system.
  40.             c)  When you are prompted to do so, remove the Installation Diskette
  41.                 and insert Diskette 1.
  42.             d)  Press Enter.
  43.             e)  When the Welcome screen is displayed, press Esc to display the
  44.                 OS/2 command prompt.
  45.             f)  With Diskette 1 in the drive, rename the IBM1S506.ADD to
  46.                 IBM1S506.OLD by typing the following at the prompt:

  48.                    RENAME IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.OLD
  49.  
  50.             g)  Continue with Step 2.
  51.  
  52. Step 2:  Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A.
  53.  
  54. Step 3:  Turn on the computer.  If the computer is already on, press and
  55.          hold Ctrl+Alt, and press Del to restart the system.  Proceed with
  56.          Diskette 1 through 5.
  57.  
  58. Step 4:  After Diskette 1 through 5 are processed, you will be asked to
  59.          reinsert the Installation diskette.
  60.  
  61.          DO SO.
  62.  
  63.          After copying some files from the Installation diskette, you will be
  64.          asked to remove the Installation diskette and press Enter to reboot.
  65.          DO NOT DO THIS. LEAVE THE INSTALLATION DISKETTE IN THE DRIVE.

  67. Step 5:  Press and hold Ctrl+Alt and press Del to restart the system.
  68.  
  69. Step 6:  Your computer should now be rebooting off the Installation Diskette.
  70.  
  71. Step 7:  When you are prompted to do so, remove the Installation Diskette and
  72.          insert Diskette 1.
  73.  
  74. Step 8:  Press Enter.
  75.  
  76. Step 9:  When the Welcome screen is displayed, press Esc to display the
  77.          OS/2 command prompt.
  78.  
  79. Step 10: You are now at a command line.  If you are NOT attempting to
  80.          install HPFS, continue on to the next step, otherwise execute the
  81.          following steps to load the HPFS driver.
  82.  
  83.             Insert Diskette #2 in the drive, and enter the following
  84.             command:
  85.  
  86.                   chkdsk c:
  87.  
  88.             (If your operating system will reside on a drive other than C,
  89.             use the appropriate drive letter instead.)
  90.  
  91. Step 11:  Enter the following commands:
  92.  
  93.              RENAME C:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD   IBM1S506.XXX
  94.              COPY   C:\OS2\IBMINT13.I13   C:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD
  95.  
  96.           (If your operating system will reside on a drive other than C,
  97.           us the appropriate drive letter instead.)

  99. Step 12:  Remove the diskette from the drive.
  100.           Press ALT-CTRL-DEL to reboot the system, and install should
  101.           pick up where it left off.

  104. WORKAROUND AFTER INSTALLATION:
  105. -----------------------------
  106. Open the system folder on the desktop, then open Command Prompts Folder
  107. Open OS/2 Window, at the prompt go the OS2 subdirectory on the drive that
  108. OS2 was installed on, and type:
  109.  
  110.     RENAME IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.XXX
  111.     COPY IBMINT13.I13  IBM1S506.ADD
  112.  
  113. Close all open folders and proceed with a proper shutdown. When the machine is
  114. rebooted the change will take effect.
