  3.                          THE SS AND THE WAFFEN SS
  4.                           `Loyalty is my honour`

  6.       The double lightning flash runes of the Schutzstaffel or
  7.       as it is more popularly known, the SS struck fear and
  8.       resepect throughout Europe, both in the occuiped terratories
  9.       and on the battle front.
  10.       At its height the SS was a vast military and commercial
  11.       empire ruled by Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler.
  12.       
  13.       The SS was originally the special elite protection squad
  14.       of the NSDAP (Nazi Party) and when it was founded in the
  15.       early 1920 and was originally subservient to the much large
  16.       SA or Brownshirts. In 1934, however after the `Night of
  17.       Long Knives` when the rebellious SA leaders who had been
  18.       leaning towards the left, were eradicated - by the more
  19.       loyal SS, the SS were given their independence and were
  20.       soon to eclipse their former comrades, the SA.
  21.       
  22.       In 1933, the bodyguard section of the SS, the Liebstandarte
  23.       Adolf Hitler became full time troops and the foundations
  24.       of the Waffen or armed SS was born. By the outbreak of the
  25.       war, the Liebstandarte SS had achieved regimental strength
  26.       and distinguished itself in the fighting in Poland and
  27.       France, eventually it was to become 1st SS Panzer Division
  28.       and under its General, Sepp Dietrich was to take part in
  29.       just about every major battle in the war.

  31.       The Waffen SS expansion during the course of the war was
  32.       very rapid and the 1st SS was soon joined by a number of
  33.       other elite armoured formations, the most outstanding of which
  34.       were SS Viking,SS Das Reich and SS Hitler Jugend.However,
  35.       many of the later divisons such as SS Handschar were divisions
  36.       in name only and were but pale shadows of the original big
  37.       SS divisions. In the end , the SS had well over a million men
  38.       under arms.

  40.       The General SS, as opposed to the Waffen SS was a part time
  41.       NSDAP organisation and functioned still as part of the Nazi
  42.       Party. Its members were drawn from all walks of life and it was
  43.       from these that the Totenkopf Guards (not to be confused with
  44.       the Totenkopf Panzer Division) which guarded the concentration
  45.       camps were drawn.

  47.       Many people in different social circles in National Socialist
  48.       circles held honorary SS rank both as a mark of support for
  49.       the regime and as an aide to climbing up the rapidly expanding
  50.       SS social ladder.

  52.       The SS was also a big industrial employer running through labour
  53.       camps and projects.
  54.       
  55.       One of the main features of the Waffen SS was the large number
  56.       of foreign nationals in its ranks.By the end of the war, the SS
  57.       had Dutch,French,Spanish,Italian,British,Norwegian,Russian,
  58.       Baltic,Ukranian,Croatian,Slovenia elements in it. In the Battle for
  59.       Berlin (April 1945), the French SS of the Regiment Charlemagne
  60.       particularly distinguished themselves, the unit of 1500 Frenchmen
  61.       fighting to the last against the Bolsheviks.

  63.       Though the SS will always remain the centre of a controversial
  64.       storm and was indeed branded a `criminal organisation` by the
  65.       occupying powers after the war, Allied troops who fought
  66.       against its soldiers all testify to the courage and tenacity
  67.       of the ordinary SS soldier.In later years, they were scattered
  68.       to the four corners of the earth. Many never returned from
  69.       Russian captivity, other with names changed fought on in the
  70.       French Foreign legion and other elite organisations.
