- Installing Windows(**) 95 Upgrade on IBM ThinkPad 760C and 760CD
- Version 1.01
- Mar. 20, 1996
-
-
- The purpose of this document is to assist you in installing Windows
- 95 on your ThinkPad 760C or 760CD computer. All the steps listed
- should be followed exactly to help you in your successful installation
- of Microsoft(**) Windows 95 and the use of all the ThinkPad functions.
- Make sure to have the proper diskettes on hand and do the steps to
- prepare your system for the installation. This document is written
- with the assumption that you are starting with an IBM Preloaded
- "SelectaSystem" which means that OS/2 Warp and Dos/Windows 3.11 came
- on your system. Also assumed is that the ThinkPad Features and
- utilities that were installed on your system are still there, for
- example, you should have an icon called "ThinkPad Features" on your
- Windows desktop. If you have reformatted your hard drive or do not
- have the ThinkPad Features loaded, you will need to obtain the
- programs from IBM. These additional programs are listed in
- section 8 of this document.
-
- As with any significant change to your computer's operating
- system or software configuration, you should be sure to backup
- all important files including data files before proceeding.

-
- 2. Preparing Your System For the Windows 95 Installation
- -----------------------------------------------------
-
- A. Update the system's bios
-
- 1. Place the System Program Service diskette in your diskette
- drive and turn on your system. Follow the instructions.
-
- Note: Cancel the installation if "installing down-level" or
- "An update is not necessary at this time" message is
- displayed - you already have the correct bios.
-
- 2. Initialize your system.
-
- a. Turn off the system. Press and hold the F1 key and turn
- on the system. The Easy Setup screen should appear.
-
- b. Select CONFIG, Initialize, OK, Exit, Restart, OK
-
- B. OS/2 Warp currently installed on ThinkPad?
- Yes => Go to Step C.
- No => Go to Step D. Cleanup your setup files
-
- C. Remove OS/2 Warp
-
- NOTE:
- If you wish to keep OS/2, Boot Manager should be used
- to control which operating system will be started on your
- ThinkPad. See the Windows 95 SETUP.TXT file for more
- information. It is located on Windows 95 Diskette 1 and on
- the Windows 95 CD in the \WIN95 directory. After you have
- reviewed this document and made any necessary changes, skip
- ahead to step 2.D. (Cleanup your setup files)
-
- a. Do you have a "Delete OS/2 Warp" icon (normally in the
- "OS/2 Warp" Program Group)?
- Yes => Double click on the Delete OS/2 Warp icon and
- follow the instructions to remove OS/2 Warp (Click
- options and choose delete).
- No => From Windows Program Manager, Click File, Run. Then
- type
- "C:\OS2TOOLS\WARPREMV.EXE WARPREMV.TXT WARPREMV.LST"
- and press enter. Click Options, then click Delete.
- Click OK for each of the two warnings.
-
- D. Cleanup your setup files
-
- This is required to remove programs that will not work in
- Windows 95 that the installation program will not perform
- automatically.
-
- 1. Make backup copy of system files to be modified.
-
- This installation procedure will require you to view and in
- some cases modify your CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and WIN.INI
- files. Before proceeding, we recommend that you make a
- backup copy of these files.
-
- a. At the DOS C:\ prompt, type "MD C:\TP95PREP" and press Enter.
- b. Type "CD \TP95PREP" and press Enter.
- c. Type "COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS" and press Enter.
- d. Type "COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT" and press Enter.
- e. Type "COPY C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI and press Enter.
-
- This will copy these system files to the C:\TP95PREP directory.
-
-
- 2. Remove STRTSCR.EXE (ThinkPad Welcome screens).
-
- To avoid a possible "Windows 95 Explorer Fault" error
- message, you should remove the STRTSCR.EXE from the
- Windows WIN.INI file.
-
- a. Start the Windows 3.1 NotePad application from the
- Accessories Program Group.
- b. Click File, Open. Then type "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI" and
- press Enter.
- c. Find the line (near the top) that begins with "load="
- or "run=".
- d. If the line contains "C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE", then
- delete this portion of the line. For example,
-
- "run=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE"
-
- should be changed to:
-
- "run=C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE"
-
- Or,
-
- "load=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE"
-
- should be changed to:
-
- "load="
-
- e. After the change is made, click File, then Exit. Then
- click "Yes" to save the change.
-
-
- 3. Remove unnecessary PCMCIA SRAM, Flash, and ATA drivers
- and other settings.
-
- If you are installing from CD or a network drive and you
- plan to use the Windows 95 Integrated PCMCIA support
- (recommended), you may want to first disable the PCMCIA
- driver for SRAM, Flash, and ATA type PCMCIA cards. This
- will remove the drive letters (usually D,E,F, and G)
- reserved by the PCMCIA driver. These will not be reserved
- when you install the Windows 95 Integrated PCMCIA support
- later, so disabling this before installation of Windows 95
- will give you a consistent default installation drive
- for any Windows 95 drivers you may install in the future.
- To disable the PCMCIA SRAM, Flash, and ATA driver:
-
- a. Edit the CONFIG.SYS (using Windows Notepad or another
- editor.
- b. Find the line that contains:
-
- "DISKDRV.SYS"
-
- If not already present, place a "REM " in front of this
- line so that it will not be executed. For example,
-
- "DEVICEHIGH=C:\THINKPAD\DISKDRV.SYS"
-
- should be changed to:
-
- "REM DEVICEHIGH=C:\THINKPAD\DISKDRV.SYS"
-
-
- Other cleanup recommendations:
-
- While these lines will not prevent your system from
- operating in Windows 95, they will generate error
- messages and we recommend making these changes.
-
- c. Edit the CONFIG.SYS using Windows Notepad or another
- editor.
-
- d. Find the line or lines that contain:
-
- "/FASTA20"
-
- Remove the "/FASTA20" from this line, for example :
-
- "DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /FASTA20"
-
- should be changed to
-
- "DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS"
-
- e. Find the line or lines that contain:
-
- "MOVEXBDAHI"
-
- Remove the "MOVEXBDAHI" from all lines, for example :
-
- "DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS MOVEXBDAHI I=B000-BFFF
- X=C800-CFFF"
-
- should be changed to
-
- "DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS I=B000-BFFF X=C800-CFFF"
-
- f. Exit the editor and save the changes.
-
- 4. Remove IBM Antivirus for DOS / Windows from the AUTOEXEC.BAT.
-
- This is necessary since the IBM Antivirus for DOS / Windows
- program is not supported in Windows 95. If you are using
- other virus protection software, you should see the SETUP.TXT
- file on the Windows 95 Diskette 1 or in the \WIN95 directory
- on the Windows 95 CD for information before continuing with
- installation.
-
- a. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT (using Windows Notepad or another
- editor.
- b. Find the line that contains:
-
- "IBMAVDR.BAT"
-
- Place a "REM " in front of this line so that it will
- not be run. For example,
-
- "CALL C:\DOS\IBMAVDR.BAT C:\DOS\"
-
- should be changed to:
-
- "REM CALL C:\DOS\IBMAVDR.BAT C:\DOS\"
-
-
- c. Exit the editor and save the change.
-
-
- 3. Installing Windows 95
- ---------------------
- Note: Before proceeding, be sure to exit Windows, then press Cntl-
- Alt-Del to restart the system and make the previous changes
- effective.
-
- A. From Windows 3.11, start the Windows 95 SETUP program. Follow
- the instructions that came with the Windows 95 program (normally
- File, Run, D:\SETUP). If you are installing from a CD-ROM with
- the ThinkPad 760CD internal CD-ROM drive (760CD model only), the
- CD-ROM and Diskette drives can only be swapped while the system
- is powered off or in FULL Suspend mode (Suspend LED lit and
- one audible beep).
-
- IMPORTANT: Follow these special instructions during the Windows
- 95 installation:
-
- "Setup Options" screen - Choose "Custom" setup
-
- "Analyzing Your Computer" screen - Choose "No, I
- want to modify the hardware list". After clicking
- "Next", highlight "Display". In the right hand box
- (Manufacturer and model) REMOVE the check mark from
- these two lines:
- S3 801/805/928/864/964 Display Adapter
- S3 Display Adapter
- Then choose next and complete the Windows 95
- installation.
-
- If you Skipped the above instructions, your screen
- may black out during the installation. If this
- happens, See "If Your Screen Blacks Out During
- Windows 95 Installation" in the Troubleshooting
- Problems (section 7) of this procedure.
-
-
- When "Windows 95 Setup Wizard" shows the Get
- Connected screen and asks if you would like to
- install support for:
-
- - The Microsoft Network
- - Microsoft Mail
- - Microsoft Fax
-
- DO NOT select any of these components at this time.
- Click "Next" without checking any of the boxes on
- this screen to continue installation. After you
- have completed installation of Mwave for Windows 95
- later in this document, you may then install these
- components and the Mwave Modem will be recognized.
-
- B. The selected choices are appropriate for most users, pressing
- "Next" on the screens that follow will complete the
- installation of Windows 95.
-
- Hint: When asked if you want to create a Startup Disk, you may
- answer "No" for now. It may be created after the
- installation, refer to section 10.
-
-
- C. Congratulations, Windows 95 should now be installed. To
- utilize the potential of your ThinkPad with Windows 95, special

- 1. When your screen blacks out, wait until any hard disk
- activity has stopped, then restart your computer.
- 2. Start the Windows 95 set up from the beginning.
- 3. On the Safe Recovery Screen of the Windows 95 Setup Wizard,
- select "Use Safe Recovery (recommended)" then click on the
- "Next" button.
- 4. On the Setup Options screen of the Windows 95 Setup Wizard,
- select "Custom" and click the "Next" button.
- 5. On the Analyzing Your Computer" screen, select "Yes, redetect
- now", then click the "Next" button.
- 6. Now you may follow the instructions on the screen to complete
- the installation.
-
- B. Red X on certain devices (example com port) in Device Manager
- that will not go away. This is not a problem. This simply
- means that the device is disabled in the current configuration.
- By default, the external serial port is disabled in ThinPad
- Setup, but it's presence is still detected by Windows 95. If
- you need to use the external serial port, use ThinkPad Setup
- to disable either Infrared or DSP Modem and then enable the
- external serial port. Then restart Windows 95 and you will be
- able to add the port to your current configuration using
- Device Manager.
-
- Note: In order to avoid possible hardware conflicts, ThinkPad
- Setup requires that you either disable the Infrared
- device, change the Infrared IRQ, or disable the Mwave
- DSP Modem before you can enable the external serial port.
- The Mwave DSP Modem may still be enabled in Windows 95,
- even if it is disabled in ThinkPad Setup.
-
- C. Digital Video
-
- If you receive the following error message when attempting to
- play a digital video (AVI) file:
-
- Video not available, cannot find 'vids:cvid' decompressor.
-
- then do the following to install the needed video compression
- support.
-
- a. Double click My Computer, then Control Panel.
- b. Click Add/Remove Programs.
- c. Click the Windows Setup tab.
- d. Click Multimedia, then click the Details button.
- e. Is Video Compression already checked?
-
- YES => Click the box beside Video Compression to uncheck
- the box.
- Click the OK button, then click the OK button on the
- Add/Remove Programs Properties screen.
- Return to step b.
-
- NO => Continue to step f.
-
- f. Click the box beside Video Compression to check the box.
- g. Click the OK button, then click the OK button on the
- Add/Remove Programs Properties screen. Windows 95 will now
- install Video Compression from your installation CD or
- diskettes.
- h. You should no longer see the error message.
-
-
- D. Known limitations with Windows 95
-
- o Timer suspend function with ThinkPad 760CD
- The ThinkPad supports the timer suspend function. This is to
- get the system suspended if there is no system activity for a
- certain period of time. The Windows 95 generic CD-ROM driver
- accesses theCD-ROM devices every three seconds to detect
- CD-ROM insertion automatically.
- This prevents the ThinkPad 760CD from suspending even if there
- has been no actual system activity for a long time. If you
- want to enable the timer suspend function:
-
- 1. Click "My Computer"
- 2. Click "Control Panel"
- 3. Click "System"
- 4. Click on "Device Manager" tab
- 5. Click "+" mark on "CD-ROM"
- 6. Double click "TEAC CD-44E"
- 7. Click on "Setting" tab
- 8. Remove a check mark on "Auto insert notification"
-
- o Enhanced Video, MPEG, CD-I and Video CD functions on 760CD
- > CD-I movie CD-ROM title support
- Windows 95 CD-ROM drivers currently do not support CD-I movie
- titles.
- > Video CD Player
- - The chapter control related functions might not work with
- some karaoke (sing-along) CDs.
- - Check the following when you do not have enough audio volume
- with the video CD player.
- . The audio volume of the video CD player (the default is 50%)
- . The Wave and Master volume control of the Mwave Audio
- Control utility
- . The speaker volume control on the computer
- > CD-ROM drive letter for MCI CD-i/Video CD and Video CD players
- To change the CD-ROM drive letter for MCI video CD/CD-i and
- Video CD players:
-
- 1. Open "My Computer".
- 2. Open "Control Panel" and open "Multimedia".
- 3. Click on "Advanced" tab; then double-click on "Media Control
- Devices".
- 4. Double-click on "(MCI) CD-i/VideoCD".
- 5. Verify that "Use this Media Control Device" is selected; then
- click on "Settings..." button.
- 6. Change the CD-ROM drive letter as needed.
-
-
- o Changing Mwave DSP configurations
- To change the Mwave DSP configurations, use the Device Manager in
- Windows 95. The ThinkPad setup may not configure the Mwave DSP
- correctly when you use Mwave support software for Windows 95.
-
-
- o 760CD Only => Asymetrix(**) Digital Video Producer(**)
- Capture Tool
-
- If you are unable to open the Options, Video Format menu in
- the Digital Video Producer Capture Tool, please do the
- following:
- a. Close Digital Video Producer Capture and close Digital
- Video Producer if open.
- b. Restart Digital Video Producer Capture Tool (but not
- Digital Video Producer).
- c. Retry Options, Video Format.
- d. If it still fails, close Digital Video Producer again and
- restart Digital Video Producer again. Then retry Options,
- Video Format.
-
- Currently, the Options, Video Format menu only works on
- every other start of Digital Video Producer Capture in
- Windows 95. It does not open at all when the Capture tool
- is started from the tool menu of the main Digital Video
- Producer. (The capture tool must be started directly).
-
- NOTE: This problem may be fixed in a future release of the
- IBM ThinkPad 755CD Enhanced Video Features (version
- higher than 1.00).
-
- 8. If you don't have all of the ThinkPad Features and Utilities
- ------------------------------------------------------------
- installed
- ---------
-
- The following completes the list of ThinkPad 760 diskettes needed
- if they were eliminated by formatting the hard drive:

- 9. Adding Internal CD-ROM Support for MS-DOS Mode (760CD Only)
- -----------------------------------------------------------
-
- In some cases you may need CD-ROM support while operating in
- MS-DOS Mode. This can be accomplished by adding an alternate startup
- configuration when MS-DOS Mode is started. If you want to add
- this optional configuration, perform the following steps:
-
- A. From Windows 95 Desktop, open the settings for "Exit To Dos":
- Double click "My Computer", then "(C:)". Then double click the
- "Windows" folder and find the "Exit To Dos" icon. With the
- right mouse button, click this icon. This should open a
- selection window.
- B. Choose "Properties" from the selection window.
- C. "Exit To Dos Properties" Window should now be displayed. Select
- "Program", then "Advanced". The "Advanced Program Settings"
- window should be displayed. Ensure that the MS-DOS mode box is
- checked.
- D. Click the "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration" circle.
- You may now add DOS statements that will be loaded when the
- system is started in Real DOS Mode. The following lists our
- recommendations which may be typed in the following windows.
- These statements will also ensure that a mouse driver and
- MWAVE game support is added.
-
- "CONFIG.SYS for MS-DOS mode:"
-
- DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
- DOS=HIGH,UMB
- DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM FRAME=E000
-
- DEVICEHIGH=C:\MWW\MANAGER\MWD50430.EXE
- DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\IBMTPCD.SYS <- (760CD Only)
- DEVICE=C:\V7320\V7320MGR.EXE <- (760CD Only)
- DEVICE=C:\V7320\V7320APM.EXE <- (760CD Only)
-
- "AUTOEXEC.BAT for MS-DOS mode"
-
- SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
- SET PS2MSG=C:\THINKPAD\PS2.MSG
- SET MWPATH=C:\MWD\MANAGER;C:\MWD\MWGAMES
- SET PATH=C:\THINKPAD;C:\MWD\MANAGER;C:\MWW\DLL;C:\COMPELPE;
- SET LIBPATH=C:\MWD\MANAGER
- SET MWROOT=C:\MWD
- SET IPF_PATH=C:\IPFWIN
-
- LOADHIGH C:\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:TPCD001 <- (760CD Only)
-
- CALL MWAVE START NOSHOW
-
- LOADHIGH C:\DOS\MOUSE.COM /Y
-
-
- E. After the changes are made, click "OK" and "OK" again to
- close the open windows.
-
- This configuration will now be used when you restart your system
- in MS-DOS mode.
-
- 10. Creating a Windows 95 Startup Disk
- ----------------------------------
-
- A. You must have a blank, formatted 1.4MB diskette and the
- diskette drive installed before proceeding. You must also have
- your Windows 95 program disks or CD available. If you are
- installing from CD, start your system with the CD-ROM drive
- installed.
- B. Double click "My Computer".
- C. Double click "Control Panel".
- D. Double click "Add/Remove Programs"
- E. Click "Startup Disk" tab, then "Create Disk..."
- F. You will be asked to insert the disk in drive A:
- If you need to exchange your cd-rom and diskette
- drive => go to step G.
- If you are installing from diskette
- => Follow the instructions on
- your screen (end of procedure).
- G. Press FN F4 to enter suspend mode. After the one beep,
- exchange your CD-ROM drive with the diskette drive. Press
- FN to resume.
- H. Insert a blank diskette in the diskette drive.
- I. Click "OK". The diskette will be created.
-
-
- 11. Dock II SCSI Bios (using Dock II only)
- --------------------------------------
-
- Disable SCSI BIOS in Dock 2. (Installations with Dock 2 only)
-
- If you have a Dock 2, this step is necessary to ensure proper
- warm / hot docking to the Dock 2 when running Windows 95.
- This is done by changing DIP switch settings in the Dock 2.
- Switches 1, 2, and 3 should be set to "On" to select "BIOS
- disabled, board active on reset". See the Dock 2 User's Guide
- for instructions.
-
- 12. Removing DOS Startup Menu in CONFIG.SYS
- ---------------------------------------
-
- If you are currently using a Startup Menu in CONFIG.SYS,
- you may want to skip this menu now that Windows 95 is
- installed. Use of this type of startup menu in CONFIG.SYS
- is usually not required in Windows 95 since Windows 95:
-
- - Is less prone to Conventional Memory Constraints.
- - Can automatically develop configurations for
- Docked and Undocked states.
- - Can Restart to MS-DOS Mode when required.
-
- If you would like to skip this menu during startup, do the
- following:
- a. At the DOS Prompt, type Edit C:\CONFIG.SYS and press Enter.
- b. In the ₧MENUÄ section of CONFIG.SYS, find the line that
- begins with "MENUDEFAULT=". This line specifies which
- DOS menu selection will be used as default, and the time
- to wait before starting without any input.
- c. If there is a comma followed by a number at the end of
- this line, change the number to 0.
- d. If there is no comma and number at the end of this line,
- add the following at the end of the line with no space
- after the configuration name:
- ,0
- e. Click File, then Exit, then Yes to save the change. At your
- next restart, Windows 95 should use the default startup in
- your CONFIG.SYS without displaying the menu.
-
-
- 13. Configuring ThinkPad Hardware Devices in Windows 95
- ---------------------------------------------------
-
- If you need to change any of your hardware device settings
- such as I/O address, IRQ, or DMA, you need to use the proper
- utility for the device you wish to configure. In some cases
- you will need to use Windows 95 Device Manager and in some
- cases you will need to use the ThinkPad Setup utility. See
- the table below for the utility to use for each device:
-
- Hardware Device To Change Resource Settings
- --------------- ---------------------------
- Mwave DSP Windows 95 Device Manager
- - Soundblaster(**) Windows 95 Device Manager
- - MPU-401 MIDI Windows 95 Device Manager
- - Modem Windows 95 Device Manager
-
- Infrared ThinkPad Setup, Infrared
- Serial ThinkPad Setup, Serial
- Parallel ThinkPad Setup, Parallel
- Enhanced Video ThinkPad Setup, Video Controller
-
-
-
- NOTE: A Red X beside a device in Device manager only means
- that the device is disabled in the current configuration.
