  6. This procedure is for installing OS/2 Warp version 4.0 via the Remote Install
  7. facility included with the product on the IBM Thinkpad 760 series machines using
  8. the IBM Auto 16/4 PCMCIA Token Ring Card.
  9.  
  10. This procedure is for basic OS/2 installation and operation only.  Enhanced
  11. features such as Mwave and MPEG playback are addressed in seperate procedures
  12. from this document.

  19. *** Preliminary Setup ***
  20.  
  21. The Thinkpad should be placed on AC power prior to beginning the installation.
  22. Failure to do so can cause various inconsistencies in the installation which
  23. will prevent the system from functioning normally.  Remove the Thinkpad from any
  24. dock station.
  25.  
  26. Obtain the following files from IBM, run each from a temporary directory and
  27. follow the instructions to create the diskettes as listed.
  28.  
  29. Note:  The actual file descriptions listed here may vary from the descriptions
  30. as posted on the BBS, ftp site, or the WEB.  The file name, size, and date
  31. should be exact.

  56.         is installed during Thinkpad Features installation.

  59. Start the OS/2 Warp Remote Install from the machine which will act as the remote
  60. server.  Create the Remote Installation diskettes, selecting PCMCIA Support for
  61. the respective Thinkpad being used.   Select the IBM PCMCIA Token-Ring Network
  62. Adapters for the network card. Default Ring Speed will default to AUTORINGSPEED
  63. which should be fine.

  66. *** Installation ***
  67.  
  68. Consult the README file on the Thinkpad System Update diskette for the Thinkpad
  69. being used and follow the instructions for use.
  70.  
  71. Boot the Thinkpad from the Remote Installation diskettes and proceed through the
  72. first part of the installation.
  73.  
  74. After the Thinkpad re-boots to the System Configuration Screen, select VGA for
  75. the video display (the installation will auto-detect a Trident 8900, this will
  76. not work). Choose the Thinkpad being used for for PCMCIA support.   For the
  77. 760L/LD/EL/ELD, select Multimedia Device Support and change to Port Address for
  78. the ESS 688 device to 240. For the Thinkpad 760CD/LD/ED/ELD models, select the
  79. Thinkpad 755CD, TEAC CD-40E for CD-ROM support.

  81. Note:  The ESS 688 driver may give an error on re-boot if the device was not
  82. previously set to Port Address 240.  Ignore the error and proceed with the
  83. installation.  Use the Thinkpad Features to set the device to 240 at the end of
  84. the installation.

  86. For networking support installation, consult the network administrator for client
  87. selection.  Assuming the common configuration of both LAN Requestor and TCP/IP
  88. support:
  89.  
  90.    1. Select 'File and Print Client' for OS/2 LAN Requestor and Peer support.
  91.  
  92.    2. Select 'TCP/IP Services' for TCP/IP support.
  93.  
  94. Note:  Eliminate Step 1 if only TCP/IP support is required, and vice versa.
  95.  
  96. Select 'Next' to proceed to the 'Welcome to Configuration' panel.

  98. For the File and Print Client:
  99.  
  100.    1. Select the 'File and Print Sharing Services' and from the configuration
  101.       panel, select the installation drive to install the File and Print Client
  102.       to.  Fill in the Workstation name, the Workstation description, and the
  103.       Domain name as supplied by the network administrator.  'LAN Server
  104.       Administration' and 'Install Sharing' are checked by default.  'Delete
  105.       user ID database (NET.ACC)' is not necessary unless instructed to do so
  106.       the network administrator.

  108.    2. Select 'Network Adapters and Protocol Services' and from the configuration
  109.       panel, select the installation drive to install to.  Change the network
  110.       adapter by selecting 'Change adapter' and highlighting 'IBM PCMCIA
  111.       Token-Ring Network Adapters'.  Select 'OK' to continue.  IBM NETBIOS and
  112.       IBM TCP/IP are the default protocols added for the adapter. Add any
  113.       additional protocols as instructed by the network administrator.

  115.    3. Select 'Network Adapters for File and Print Sharing' and verify that
  116.       Adapter 0 is checked and is shown as the IBM PCMCIA Token-Ring adapter.

  118.    4. Select 'User ID and Password' and fill in the information as instructed
  119.       by the network administrator.

  121. For TCP/IP Services:
  122.  
  123.    1. Select the 'TCP/IP Services' and from the configuration panel, select the
  124.       installation drive to install TCP/IP to.  Fill in the rest of the required
  125.       information as instructed by the network administrator.
  126.  
  127.       Note:  TCP/IP Services do not need to be configured at this point of the
  128.              installation.  They can be configured later using the TCP/IP
  129.              Configuration from the OS/2 System Setup folder.
  130.  
  131.       Select 'Install' and proceed with the rest of the installation.

  133. Install the Thinkpad Features for OS/2 using the INSTALL2 program from the                             2 using
  134. Thinkpad Utilities for OS/2 diskette.  The INSTALL2 program can be run from                            S/2
  135. select Install to complete the installation.

  137. Note: Thinkpad Personalization can be installed and run, just make sure to                             iskette 2
  138.       have the Thinkpad Utilities for DOS Diskette available during the
  139.       install.

  141. ***  Video Installation ***
  142.  
  143. Install the Video Disk for OS/2 Warp by inserting the respective diskette for
  144. the Thinkpad being used and type INSTALL x, where x is the drive in which OS/2
  145. is installed; and follow the instructions.
