Click on the Image Menu, then point the mouse at Effects
to access these options. While the sub-menu is open, click
one of the choices, or press the underlined letter key to
use that function.
Most of these effects can be used on a smaller portion of
an image, as well as the entire image.
The Effects possible are:
3D Button
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click 3D Button on the sub-menu that appears.
Gives the image a beveled edge look, with the center
raised. This image can be used to provide a button for
a web page or other programs that use image buttons.
This can also be used to make a nice frame around the
image. Remember that some of the edge will be used for
the frame area. Any image near the edges will be "bent"
a bit out of shape. The size of the border can be
changed using the Setup dialog.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
Blur
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click Blur on the sub-menu that appears.
Softens the image, creating a blurry or fuzzy look. The
amount of blur can be changed using the Setup dialog.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
Emboss
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click Emboss on the sub-menu that appears.
Turns the background grey and gives the image an engraved
appearance. Works best with line drawings, and especially
text; some photos will work well, others not so.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
Oil Paint
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click Oil Paint on the sub-menu that appears.
Creates a textured effect, such as that seen in an oil
painting. The amount of texture can be changed using the
Setup dialog.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
Edge Detection
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click Edge Detection on the sub-menu that appears.
Finds the main lines in an image and replaces their color
with the opposite color, at the same time most fill colors
are darkened, making them like a background. The image
takes on a "painted on velvet" appearance. This effect
needs a color depth of 256 or less to work properly.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
Median Filter
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click Median Filter on the sub-menu that appears.
Changes the brightness of a group of pixels, causing them
to have the brightness of the "average" pixel in that
group. In most cases, this has a "smoothing" effect on
the area being filtered. (Take care: I once applied it to
a photo of someone with freckles, and most of the freckles
vanished!) The amount of filter can be changed using the
Setup dialog.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
Explosion
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click Explosion on the sub-menu that appears.
Breaks up the image, as if the darker pixels exploded. The
amount of Explosion can be changed using the Setup dialog.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
Pixelize
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click Pixelize on the sub-menu that appears.
Breaks the image into a coarse version of itself, as
if it were made up of oversized pixels. The amount of
pixelization (if there is such a word...) can be
changed using the Setup dialog.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
Fine Rotation
Click on the Image Menu, point the mouse at Effects, and
click Fine Rotation on the sub-menu that appears.
Turns the image an amount to the left or right. The degree
of rotation can be changed using the Setup dialog.
The Image menu options Rotate Left and Rotate Right perform
the same function, though only turn the image 90 degrees
left or right. Fine rotation can turn an image as little
as one degree. For the smaller amounts, it is best to drag
an editing outline around the image.
This action can be reversed with the Edit menu Undo
command.
