Because of its size, Asia involves practically all climatic zones, i.e. from tundra and taiga through the temperate zone to subtropical and tropical regions. The major part of this continent show the character of arid, deforested territories and only in the most humid regions of Eastern Asia there are broad-leaved forests with numerous species of plants. The south-east part of Asia, i.e. the so-called Indo-Malaysian region, is situated in the zone of rainfall virgin forest. From this part of the world, numerous species of predators, ungulates, parrots and other groups of birds are kept in capture.

Africa is situated in the tropical region with a large massive of rainfall forest in the equatorial region. A large part of this continent is covered with savannahs which change into a desert both in the north and south-west. In the utmost northern and southern parts of Africa, the climate shows subtropical characteristics. In Brno ZOO, a rich collection of African fauna is kept in capture, especially of predators, ungulates (antelopes above all but also zebras and giraffes), apes, birds and reptiles.

The temperate zone covers the major part of North America and tundra and taiga may be found only in the north of this region. In central latitudes of the eastern half of North America broad-leaved and mixed forest predominate while in the west there are extensive prairies. The Brno ZOO rears North American predators and ungulates.

South America is situated in the tropical region and temperate zone occurs only in its utmost southern part. In the central part of this continent, i.e. in the catchment area of the Amazon river, there is a rainfall virgin forest as well as large savannahs and steppes. Deserts and semi-deserts are situated in various parts of South America. In the Brno ZOO, several species of South American parrots, predators, ungulates and reptiles are kept in capture.

The Australian territory is partly tropical and partly temperate. Only in its north-eastern part there are some rainfall virgin forests which are linked up with eucalyptus forests further in the south-east direction. Extensive deserts cover the central part of this continent. Only in this region members of the ancient subclass of oviparous mammals occur together with a wide spectrum of marsupials. Bennet┤s wallaby represents Australian fauna in our ZOO.

In the Brno zoological garden there are more than 500 animals belonging to 132 species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We keep animals from all continents with the exception of Antarctica.
