Frequently
Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions we get asked most often. If you have a
question that isn't addressed here, then please email support@pocketforce.com
What is the latest version of
Enforcer?
Enforcer is currently at Version 1.2. You can always find the latest
version of Enforcer at our web site.
If you buy Enforcer you can upgrade to new versions for free. Simply
download the new version, disable your current version, and install
the new.
Does Enforcer run on the XYZ-1950?
Enforcer has been designed to run on any device which runs Palm OS at
a version greater than 2.0 - this includes the PalmPilot series, Palm III,
V, VII, Handspring's Visors and Symbol's SPT Bar Coded devices. If you
have a device that Enforcer doesn't run on, then please let
us know - and we'll do our best to make it happen.
How do I try Enforcer?
You can download a trial copy of Enforcer now.
To learn how to install it and set it up, please read the User
Guide.
How do I buy Enforcer?
Once you have evaluated Enforcer you can buy it. There are a number of
ways to do this, and full details are on our Orders
page. The orders page
also gives details on volume discounts, and how we can customize Enforcer
for your organization.
How do I enter the registration code?
After purchasing your registration code, you need to run Enforcer (as
an administrator). Then select 'Register Enforcer' from the 'Options'
menu. You can see the menus by tapping the 'menu' button on the
bottom-left of the Palm glass screen.
The code you sent doesn't work -
what's up?
The registration code is based on the devices user name or HotSync
name. Sometimes this process goes wrong, because the names don't match or
because of non-roman characters, for example. If this happens, please send
proof of purchase along with the user name to support@electricpocket.com
and we'll generate a new name for you. You can find the user name in the
registration dialog box. Select 'Register Enforcer' from the 'Options'
menu. You can see the menus by tapping the 'menu' button on the
bottom-left of the Palm glass screen. Does Enforcer
protect my Palm after a reset?
Yes, though there are differences, depending on the type of reset you
do. Enforcer will continue to enforce after a soft-reset (paper-clip only)
with no further attention. A warm-reset (paper-clip and up arrow) is a
little different, but it is still possible to protect your device from
unauthorized use. You should set a password in the Palm's Security
application. On completion of the warm-reset loop the device will prompt
you for this password - using the Palm's default security screen. Once it
is entered successfully you should run Enforcer and re-enable it. For
maximum protection, the password should only be known to administrators.
After a hard-reset all your data and applications (including Enforcer)
will be removed from the device - so it is not possible for Enforcer to
guard against use.
Does Enforcer stop all applications?
Enforcer can prevent user access to any 'normal' Palm application, by
this we mean any application that is usually launched from the system's
launcher. Enforcer does not protect against any Hackmaster Hacks (or
similar) which you may be using to add functionality to your device - that
functionality will be available to all users, so you may wish to disable
it.
You should also be wary of using third party launchers with Enforcer.
These usually patch the operating system in similar ways to Enforcer,
which may lead to odd results. If in doubt, please test your configuration
before relying soley on Enforcer to protect it.
Can I create a standard set of users
and applications?
Yes. You need to create the users and application sets on one Palm
device and then perform a HotSync. Then look in the Backup directory of
the device you have just sync'd (something like C:\Palm\username\Backup).
In the directory will be two Enforcer databases - called
EnforcerGrantedAppsDB.pdb and EnforcerUsersDB.pdb. You should install
these files (along with enforcer.prc) onto the new Palm device. This will
copy the users and the set of applications that each user can access.
