Activa ave nocturna, con manchas blancas en las alas y la cola. De plumaje más grisáceo por abajo que el Querequequé, especie menor, pero usualmente se distingue por su llamado monosilábico: "piint". Audio 2 (M. Oberle). Tamaño: 22-24 cm.; peso: 65-98 g. Anida en América del Norte e inverna en América del Sur. Un visitante en las Antillas durante la migración en la primavera y el otoño, siendo, sin embargo, difícil de identificar ya que generalmente no vocaliza en migración.
