Un pato picívoro de pico angosto, cabeza encrestada color verde oscuro y pecho marrón rojizo. La cabeza de la hembra, que también tiene cresta, es rojiza. Tamaño: 51-64 cm.; peso: 800-1,350 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Anida en la América del Norte septentrional y Eurasia, invernando en el mar que rodea el sureste de los Estados Unidos. Accidental en las costas marinas de Puerto Rico (por ejemplo, en la Reserva Natural Las Cabezas de San Juan el 20 de diciembre de 1998).
