- Hi,
- The Hard disk problems with executor are now fixed with 1.99n4 for DOS.
- It will see
- any directory on my hard-disks C & D. I do have a CD rom drive which it
- ONLY sees the root
- directory of. When you click on a subdirectory it shows up as an empty
- directory even when
- there are files in there.

-
- Ah-HAH! Finally found out why it doesn't work on my home PC.. Typically, I
- keep a Audio CD in my Mitsumi, as I tend to listen to music while I work.
- This is what was locking up my system. If I leave my default Audio CD (Best
- of the Doors, disk 1...) in the CD, Executor will hit the A drive, then the
- HD, then the CD-Rom will flash for a _very_ short time, and then the system
- locks up. Note that I am not dumb enough to try to have it playing while I
- run Executor. If I have a Mac or PC CD-Rom, no problem. It seems to be
- OS/2-specific, too. Didn't happen when I booted to Dos and ran Executor a
- few days ago.
-
- Also, if I put in a "The Disc" from CD-Rom Today magazine (I highly
- recommend it, $8 for a Mac & PC CD-Rom isn't bad), then it will create 2 new
- drives in Loser, an "F" drive and a "The Disc" drive. See, those disks have
- both Mac and Dos formats on them. I can access the Mac portion with no
- problems, but if I try the "F" drive, no matter if I hit it before the Mac
- part or not, Executor locks up. CD-Rom does not flash or anything, the
- cursor freezes, and I have to task switch back to OS/2 and kill the Executor
- VDM. I'm not sure about if it happens in Dos on this one.
-
- All this is happening on 199n3, BTW. I'm downloading 199n4 as I type this.
-
- But it's working on my home PC. Cool.

- After 2.0 is out we'll look into supporting a wide variety of file
- formats. Apple's "Apple Double" format is so brain dead that most
- programs that have to stor Mac files on a non-Mac filesystem use their
- own format, and netatalk is just one example of this. However, there

-
- Currently there are two major classes of application installers that
- are known not to work with Executor. Installers based on Apple's
- Installer break, and installers based on Bill Goodman's "Smaller
- Installer" also do not work. An example of the former is Microsoft
- Word 5's installer, an example of the latter is Maelstrom 1.4.
-
- The exact reasons these installers is not known. We have made some
- progress with "Smaller Installer" based installers and hope to have
- them running by the time 2.0 ships; we are less sure about Installers
- based on Apple's installer.
-
- The particular error message that Maelstrom's new installer produces
- is misleading; there is nothing you as a user can to to make the
- installer work -- it will require fixes made to Executor.

- 2. I noticed that in 1.99n, the `animation' technique is now

-
- 3. Pagemaker 4.2 still dosen't work - this time any attempt to

-
- 4. What is the current release schedule? Will there be a 1.99o

-
- 5. Will there ever be any `alpha' releases or snapshots? It

- The sound is in the %-fork. It's in .sou format (or at least
- that's what the sound editor I last used on them, Wired for Sound, called
- them)--generally, "raw data." There will be a "click" at the beginning
- of the sound--and maybe at the end--due to all of the headers,
- non-resource stuff, etc. Edit those out, or cut-and-paste the good part
- into a new file, save as a more common format (like .wav) and enjoy.
- You will probably have to adjust the speed of playback. I've
- noticed that Mac sounds are often slightly off-speed on a PC. Don't
- remember the numbers, but I seem to remember that 11k/sec sounds are
- really 11050/sec on the PC, but something else on the Mac, or something
- like that. I'm sure someone out here knows more about this.

- Yes, its quite easy, depending on what system you are copying these to.
- I believe that a program called "sox" will convert these files, and is
- available as source, compilable on any platform.
-
- I use Linux, and the Lsox package available on sunsite. All I ahve to do

- sox quack quack.au

- sox quack quack.wav
- makes a .wav file.
