  23. Subject: OS/2 Warp - Quicker way to Executor

  25.         Just thought I'd mention a quicker way to get E/D1.99n up and
  26. running under OS/2 warp (although anyone who's struggled to get warp fully
  27. functional may already have worked it out!). Instead of the somewhat
  28. tiresome method of booting a virtual DOS session from floppy (I'm always
  29. misplacing the damned disk),  you can set up an DOS boot disk image file on
  30. your hard disk & use it instead. This methods a bit quicker and a lot more
  31. convienient. 
  32.         All that you need to do is create a DOS boot disk with autoexec &
  33. config files set to your needs
  34. (but remember that your need DEVICE=C:\os2\mdos\fsaccess.sys to get to HPFS
  35. partitions) and then
  36. open an OS/2 command session. From here all you need to do is type VMDISK A:
  37. DOS.IMG, and the file
  38. DOS.IMG will be created in the current directory. Finally, change (or
  39. create) your Executor Icon's settings
  40. to boot DOS not from A: but from C:\...\DOS.IMG.
  41.         Hey-Presto! Executor boots quicker (and won't take the system down
  42. when those buggy apple applications crash the finest piece of engineering
  43. since the wheel!!!).

  59. contain experimental updates from 1.99n to 1.99n4.  These intermediate
  60. releases are not well tested by ARDI, but we think they fix some
  61. important bugs in 1.99n so please try them out if you are bold.  Note
  62. that we've switched to a sane naming scheme for the BleedingEdge
  63. releases; "vesafix.zip" would have been called "dos199n3.zip" under
  64. the new scheme.

  67. describing the relevant bug fixes.

  105. I should point out that since the BleedingEdge releases only replace
  106. one file in 1.99n, they are much smaller than a full distribution.
  107. The DOS update is around 450K and the Linux update is around 420K.

  119.     I've downloaded 'vesafix.zip' and it seems to sort out the mode change
  120. problems and the mouse problems that were present in the 1.99n release.

  122.     Well done!  These were important bugs to get fixed.  I'm just going to
  123. download the 1.99n4 and see if the disk/CD bugs have been fixed.

  137. I just got Executor/DOS 1.99n and tried to run it on my computer.  No 
  138. luck.  The screen goes black, then Executor checks the disk drives.  The 
  139. computer does not seem to lock up, but the screen never comes back.  In 
  140. fact, if I reboot, the reboot process goes normally, but the screen 
  141. remains black.

  181. For those of you who use Win95 with Executor,

  183. I read from the FAQ that with Win95, people are able to switch with
  184. ALT-TAB.  For me, it never works, it either beeps and won't let me go
  185. back to Win95 w/o quitting, or it brings me back to Win95, but no way to
  186. get back to E/D.  The Executor crashes if I try to go back, with the
  187. garbage screen.  (I forgot if I had to reboot or if I could just
  188. terminate Executor and go on with Win95)
  189.  
  190. My setup for E/D is just a plain dos pif with AUTO memory for everything
  191. and -nosplash as a command line parameter.

  205. One thing that I learning was that you had to have the dos in you path 
  206. statement PATH=C:\DOS; and the other stuff.

  262. When I try to run Executor under Windows (without booting to DOS) it says:

  280. Well, got the vesafix.zip off of the bleeding edge directory and as it
  281. said, E/D1.99n now works with Warp. Good. Once again, i no longer have
  282. to look at DOS's incapable face.

  284. One thing i noticed. At least in OS/2, Executor won't load unless
  285. there is a CD-ROM in the drive. Haven't tried it in DOS. The original
  286. package didn't need a disk. Was this anticipated?

  288. I'm really impressed with the speed. Now my 486 is faster and has
  289. faster graphics than my friends 25MHz 040. He's impressed too.

  307. The old format was unnecessarily confusing.  The "executor" contained
  308. in this file is the same as the "old" 1.99n4 Linux update, so if you
  309. figured out how to use the old update there's no need to grab this
  310. one.  Enjoy.

  320. Well, ever since 1.99n, I've tried to get Executor to read my CD-ROm
  321. drive...It will do DOS CDs fine, but I can't get it to read Mac disks...I
  322. currently have the latest Bleeding Edge update (199n4), and Have named the CD
  323. ROM drive J and H, it worked neither time...And the problem with it reading
  324. anything off the directories of the DOS CDs still exists...I haven't tried it
  325. with any otehr versions of Exec, as I just obtained the CDs...
  326. I am running E/D 1.99n4 on a P-90, 8 meg RAM, 1 gig HD...
