  1. Hi folks,

  3. There is a demo version of 1.99h available for DOS and Linux and
  4. a transmog file for 1.99h for our DOS customers.
  5.  
  6. Executor/Linux 1.99h has a bunch of new X-windows code in it, as
  7. well as a set of bug fixes that affect the DOS version as well.
  8.  
  9. Both Executor/Linux and Executor/DOS have new timer handling code.
  10. This code is needed for our future ability to drop in an Apple
  11. System 7.5 file and have it work (no, it's not anywhere near working
  12. right now; don't expect this feature for another six months).  The
  13. new timer code also allows the DOS version to use virtual memory
  14. without locking up the machine.
  15.  
  16. The drawback is that some timer critical programs (globe, when you
  17. use sync to VBL and Word when you try to print) will not behave
  18. properly with this new version.  Mat's about to take a week of
  19. vacation, so it may be a few weeks before we get this particular
  20. problem fixed, but once we do, we'll start distributing the
  21. experimental versions of Executor to the usual MS-DOS, Linux and
  22. NEXTSTEP (actually, we have to revamp our NEXTSTEP front-end before
  23. we can release it, that's why there's no 1.99h for NEXTSTEP) ftp
  24. sites and also spread more word about Executor on both the internet
  25. and some of the major on-line providers.

  27. We still have a little functionality to add, but mostly we just
  28. have tons of bug fixes that need to be made before we can release
  29. 2.0.  We're working on a definitive list of what needs to get done
  30. and we'll share it with this mailing list when it's ready.

  32. Bill Goldman is back from vacation, so our file browser/launcher
  33. will be released soon.  We've had some important meetings of late,
  34. so Bill's continued to work on the browser on a Mac, but I personally
  35. haven't had enough time to fix the Executor bugs that it's pointed
  36. out, nor to bundle it up and put it on ftp.cs.unm.edu for your
  37. examination, but we will be doing that soon.

  39. I hope everyone had a good set of holidays.  The flu that I caught
  40. before the holidays struck me once again right around New Years,
  41. so I'm still trying to catch up from early December when I first
  42. caught it, but all in all, things have been going very well.

  44. The X-Windows improvements that our Executor/Linux users might
  45. notice (they're not particularly well documented, but you can now
  46. specify different "bpp" settings, and use a wider variety of
  47. X-servers than before, and by default the colors in other windows
  48. won't be whacked out) are largely due to Cotton Seed working for
  49. us once again.  If the talks that we've been having of late pan
  50. out, we'll also be hiring another three or four additional engineers,
  51. then things will really fly.

  53. It's still too early to say when ftp.ardi.com will be up; we haven't
  54. even bought the networking hardware yet, but it is something that
  55. we want to do soon, especially since Executor/DOS and Executor/Linux
  56. are more attractive than ever.
