Yes, SunSoft has ported Solaris 2.1/Solaris2.4 to x86. I'll refrain from sharing my painful experiences with it, as others seem to use it quite regularly and give it glowing remarks. The biggest downside, IMHO, is that not all Solaris source is compatible with Solaris x86 (Java for example). From experience, you need >16M (32 is a good usable minimum), >486'33 (there is a bit of system overhead), and a fairly standard platform to run it on. But, does it work like Solaris? Yep... 99% the same. As for the "ibm based computer" incompatibility... it doesn't support MCA (Microchannel *shudder*) based machines. If you have one of the newer IBM boxes, my bet is that you will be fine. Why anyone still pays the premium for a name brand IBM PC is an entirely different issue ;) - Ian Blenke <ian@blenke.com>
