  112. gadget to implement the parameter changes that have been made on the main screen
  113. and the SPECIAL EFFECTS screens.

  135. Brief description of SYNTHIA:

  139.  Synthia is a high performance synthesizer. It provides a musician with a means
  140. of creating musical instruments to a precision which is difficult to match with
  141. hardware based synthesizers. It uses the IFF format for compatibility with other
  142. musical and sound effects products (digitizers, video managers etc.).
  143.    Synthia was not based on an existing synthesizer. Instead Synthia attempts to
  144. synthesize real instruments.  Since Synthia uses a computer, much more interaction
  145. is possible than with a traditional synthesizer. This allows much greater precision
  146. to be used when creating instruments.
  147.    State of the art algorithms are implemented in Synthia. This allows a breakdown
  148. of Synthia into different modules, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

  156. - a traditional subtractive synthesis package. A waveform is repeated
  157. through the sound and modified with             filtering, frequency, phase, amplitude
  158. modulation, and other  effects. Great for most 'traditionally synthesized' instruments.

  164. - an additive synthesis package. Works by mixing a changing amount
  165. of the first 16 harmonics of a waveform, usually a sine wave. Can be used to
  166. create just about any type of sound possible.

  174. Interpolative
  175. .BLACK
  176. - interpolates between 8 waveforms over the duration of the sound.
  177. Not as accurate as Additive but is excellent for most percussive musical sounds
  178. such as the piano. It introduces some imperfection which sounds very nice in
  179. some circumstances.

  185. -   our pride and joy. Does guitars, basses, and  about any type of plucked
  186. string possible. It has very little overhead considering it generates one of
  187. the more difficult types of instruments to simulate. It uses a new algorithm
  188. to accomplish this.

  195. Percussion
  196. .BLACK
  197. - simulates several families of percussive instruments.  Uses a
  198. new algorithm to generate more realistic percussion.

  201.    Synthia uses a waveform editor to design waveforms, envelopes and tables for
  202. various parameters. It features harmonic, Chebyshev polynomial, linear, and spline
  203. generation. Several waveforms are also available. The user may also draw a waveform
  204. if desired.

  207.    Synthia also has several modules for modifying an existing sound. The modules

  215. - for wow effects etc. Supports highpass, lowpass, bandpass, and band
  216. limit filtering.

  222. - for making the sound louder or softer. It is a clipping amplifier
  223. so it can generate distortion effects as well.

  229. - like an ADSR generator on most synthesizers, but uses
  230. a Synthia envelope which allows 256 point precision envelopes.

  236. - true reverb. This module was designed knowing that an echoed sound
  237. is NOT identical to the original. It is modified with a frequency dependent phase
  238. shift to resemble true echoes. Also has a filter for simulating concert hall
  239. effects. Feedback and level are independent of each other.

  245. - called Phasing on some systems . This is a modulated phase shift (or
  246. comb filter) effect.

  250. Non-Linear Distortion

  252. - called Wave Shaping or Non Linear Processing on other
  253. systems. This changes the harmonic content of a sound based on its amplitude
  254. etc. Trumpets, flutes, and many other instruments can be simulated by amplitude
  255. modulating a sine wave and passing it through this module. Fuzz effects can also
  256. be created with this module. Chebyshev polynomials provided in the waveform editor
  257. provide control over this module.
