  17.      Two of  several  modules  are  included  on  this  disk.  They are fully
  18. functional  with  the exception of the SAVE functions which has been replaced
  19. with ABOUT SYNTHIA.  The release version saves instruments in ›33mIFF ›31mformat.  ›4m

  21. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYNTHIA DEMO

  24.    To operate the Synthia disk:

  28.            1.  ›31mLoad Kickstart 1.2. (1.1 should work but is untested) ›33m
  29.  
  30.            2.  ›31mPlace  the  ›33mSynthia  ›31mdisk  in df0:. It will boot to ›33mWorkbench.

  33.            3.  ›31mOpen ›33mSynthia ›31m's disk icon.  ›33m

  35.            4.  ›31mSelect the ›33mString ›31micon.  ›33m
  36.  
  37.            5.  ›31mWhen  the  ›33mPlucked  String ›31mwindow appears, select the ›33mDO SOUND
  38.       ›31mgadget.  When  the  BUSY  pointer changes back to the standard pointer,
  39.       the  AMIGA  keyboard can be used to play the instrument or the KEYBOARD
  40.       gadget can be selected.

  42.         Various parameters  can  be changed by using the Synthia gadgets. Use
  43.    the  DO  SOUND  gadget  to  implement the parameter changes that have been
  44.    made on the main screen and the SPECIAL EFFECTS screens.

  48.    ›1mNOTE:  ›0mREPEAT  FINE and REPEAT COURSE change the repeats without selecting
  49.    DO SOUND.

  56.  
  57.  
  58.         Synthia is  a  high  performance  synthesizer. It provides a musician
  59.    with  a  means  of  creating  musical  instruments to a precision which is
  60.    difficult  to  match  with  hardware  based  synthesizers. It uses the IFF
  61.    format  for  compatibility  with  other musical and sound effects products
  62.    (digitizers, video managers etc.).  
  63.  
  64.         Synthia was  not  based  on  an existing synthesizer. Instead Synthia
  65.    attempts  to  synthesize real instruments.  Since Synthia uses a computer,
  66.    much  more  interaction  is  possible than with a traditional synthesizer.
  67.    This allows much greater precision to be used when creating instruments.

  69.         State of  the  art algorithms are implemented in Synthia. This allows
  70.    a  breakdown  of  Synthia  into  different  modules,  each  with  its  own
  71.    strengths and weaknesses.  The modules implemented at this time are:

  74.            1.  ›33mSynthia  ›31m-  a  traditional  subtractive  synthesis  package. A
  75.       waveform   is   repeated   through   the   sound   and   modified  with
  76.       filtering,  frequency, phase, amplitude modulation, and other  effects.
  77.       Great for most 'traditionally synthesized' instruments.

  80.            2.  ›33mAdditive  ›31m-  an  additive synthesis package. Works by mixing a
  81.       changing  amount  of  the  first  16 harmonics of a waveform, usually a
  82.       sine  wave.  Can  be  used  to  create  just  about  any  type of sound
  83.       possible.  ›33mThis module is included in the demo.  ›31m
  84.  
  85.  
  86.            3.  ›33mInterpolative  ›31m-  interpolates  between  8  waveforms over the
  87.       duration  of  the  sound.  Not as accurate as Additive but is excellent
  88.       for  most  percussive  musical  sounds such as the piano. It introduces
  89.       some imperfection which sounds very nice in some circumstances.

  92.            4.  ›33mString  ›31m-    our  pride  and  joy.  Does  guitars, basses, and
  93.       about  any type of plucked string possible. It has very little overhead
  94.       considering   it   generates   one  of  the  more  difficult  types  of
  95.       instruments  to  simulate.  It uses a new algorithm to accomplish this.
  96.       ›33mThis module is included in the demo.  ›31m

  99.            5.  ›33mPercussion   ›31m-   simulates   several  families  of  percussive
  100.       instruments.    Uses   a  new  algorithm  to  generate  more  realistic
  101.       percussion.

  104.         Synthia uses  a  waveform  editor  to design waveforms, envelopes and
  105.    tables   for   various   parameters.   It   features  harmonic,  Chebyshev
  106.    polynomial,  linear,  and  spline  generation.  Several waveforms are also
  107.    available. The user may also draw a waveform if desired.

  111.         Synthia also  has  several  modules  for modifying an existing sound.
  112.    The modules are:

  115.            1.  ›33mFilter  ›31m-  for  wow  effects  etc. Supports highpass, lowpass,
  116.       bandpass, and band limit filtering.  
  117.  
  118.  
  119.            2.  ›33mAmplifier  ›31m-  for  making  the sound louder or softer. It is a
  120.       clipping amplifier so it can generate distortion effects as well.

  123.            3.  ›33mAmplitude   Modulation  ›31m-  like  an  ADSR  generator  on  most
  124.       synthesizers,  but  uses  a  Synthia  envelope  which  allows 256 point
  125.       precision envelopes.

  128.            4.  ›33mReverb  ›31m-  true  reverb. This module was designed knowing that
  129.       an  echoed  sound is NOT identical to the original. It is modified with
  130.       a  frequency  dependent phase shift to resemble true echoes. Also has a
  131.       filter  for  simulating  concert  hall  effects. Feedback and level are
  132.       independent of each other.

  135.            5.  ›33mFlang  ›31m-  called Phasing on some systems . This is a modulated
  136.       phase shift (or comb filter) effect.  
  137.  
  138.  
  139.            6.  ›33mNon-Linear  Distortion  ›31m-  called  Wave  Shaping or Non Linear
  140.       Processing  on  other  systems.  This changes the harmonic content of a
  141.       sound  based  on  its  amplitude  etc. Trumpets, flutes, and many other
  142.       instruments  can  be  simulated by amplitude modulating a sine wave and
  143.       passing  it  through this module. Fuzz effects can also be created with
  144.       this  module.  Chebyshev  polynomials  provided  in the waveform editor
  145.       provide control over this module.

  148.         A couple more modules are planned for the release version.

  168.         Synthia also  allows  modification  of  digitized  sounds, so it is a
  169.    perfect companion to any hardware product that create sounds.
