- Topographer ReadMe file Version 1.00
- ====================================
-
- See the file Tutor to get a quick rundown of Topographer.
-
- The file DemoHelp1 provides additional information.
-
- DO NOT edit the draw files in directory !Topo2D.Art as this this will
- cause Topo to fail.
-
- If you get an error message such as 'Font not found' double click on the
- !Fonts application supplied on the Topographer disc 1. When you
- catalogue disc one, the !Fonts folder will automatically install the
- fonts unless you already have a font path set eg on a hard disc or in the
- RISC OS 3 Rom. If you are using a non outline font manager you may still
- have a font path set and so the new fonts will not automatically install
- themselves. In this case click on the !Fonts directory.
-
- The file, Demo, supplied in the Maps directory on the Topo3D disc will not
- load on a 1Mb computer.
-
- Since printing the manual we have had some feedback regarding the
- coordinates system in Topographer and we have made the following changes to
- provide the best combination of facilities whilst following the guidelines
- for the National Curriculum.
-
- Grid scales can now only be set in multiples of ten. This is achieved by
- selecting grid sizes of 10m, 100m, 1km or 10km using the buttons in the
- Grid window. The old method of setting the Grid size as described on page 26
- of the manual is now obsolete.
-
- In addition, we have now added a facility to allow you to select how many
- digits are used in the coordinates window. You can select between 2 and 5
- digits, giving you very accurate positioning. The selection of the number of
- digits is also done in the Grid window using buttons. This setting is
- saved with the map.
-
- The normal maps used in the National Curriculum are 1:25000 and 1:50000, the
- latter being the more popular. These have scales of 4cm to 1km and 2cm to
- 1km respectively. In these cases the area covered by one square on the
- default grid is always 1km (1000m) square ie the grid on the 1:25000 map is
- twice the size of that on the 1:50000 map.
-
- Using 3 digits in the coordinates window at these scales allows you to
- position features to an accuracy of 100 metres eg 091 means grid 09 plus
- 1/10th of a grid (each grid is 1000m by default).
-
- For larger scale maps (1:1250 & 1:2500), such as the ones supplied in the
- Tutorial, the above accuracy is not good enough for a computer based system.
- We suggest that you use 5 digits as used in the Tutorial. This provides
- accuracy down to 1 metre if you use the default grid size of 100 metres.
-
- The following table lists the defaults for each map scale:
-
- Scale Size Grid Digits
-
- 1:1250 500m 100m 5
- 1:2500 1000m 100m 5
- 1:10000 5000m 1km 3
- 1:25000 20000m 1km 3
- 1:50000 40000m 1km 3
- 1:125000 100000m 10km 2
- 1:250000 200000m 10km 2
- 1:625000 600000m 10km 2

- New features:
- =============
-
- Road labels
- ===========
-
- A new feature not documented in the manual has been added. This is Road
- label and is found at the bottom of the Features window between the two
- 'County' labels. It is shown as a button marked 'A30'. Click on this button
- and enter the road label into the input box and then click on OK. To place
- the road label click onto the map at the point that you want the label to
- appear. Topographer uses some intelligence in positioning the road label.
- It finds the nearest road to where you click and then finds the nearest
- road segment (a straight bit between two points as shown when you edit
- the road) and positions the label in the middle of that segment. The
- label is offset from the road by the length of the text and the label adopts
- the colour of the road. If the position is not to your liking you can select
- the label and move it to another position.
-
- Coordinates window
- ==================
-
- A coordinates window has been added to the Topo3D program. The number of
- digits displayed is taken from the settings made in Topo2D.
-
- Print information:
- ==================
-
- In the current version the Print option in Topo2D is not fully implemented.
- It was only intended to print out one page and if you wanted a map that
- would not fit on a single page then you were to adjust the origin so that
- you could print the next page. The changing of the origin is not implemented
- so you will only ever get the bottom left corner of any map. There are two
- possible solutions to this:
-
- 1) Alter the map scale using the Map =>Scale option. For example the map
- 'Later' could be set to a scale of 1:5000 so that the print fills 3/4 of an
- A4 page.
-
- 2) You can export the map as a Draw file. If you load it into Draw you can
- scale the map to fit on a single page. Alternatively, you could use a
- commercial print tiling program to print it out onto several sheets.
-
- Known Bugs:
- ===========
-
- In certain low memory conditions Topo3D can fail with an error 'Failed to
- create sprite' or similar. The application will then remove itself from the
- icon bar. This will be fixed in future releases but to avoid losing your
- maps ensure that you save them to disc before exporting to Topo3D.
-
- Saving a Draw file from Topo directly into Impression does not always
- give the expected results. To avoid this save the file into Draw first, do a
- 'Group all' and save the selection into Impression which then accepts it
- okay.
-
- The Future
- ==========
-
- There are plans to enhance and develop Topographer and any ideas or wishes
- that you have will be warmly welcomed. Please send them, in writing, to:
-
- D. Clare
- Clares Micro Supplies
- 98 Middlewich Road
- Northwich
- Cheshire
- CW9 7DA
-
- We would also appreciate seeing any maps that you create and we would like
- to build up a library. If you send us maps on a disc we will send you back
- some maps in return. In this way all users can share their maps with others
- who will appreciate them. Please send them to the above address.
