- 4Welcome to the fifth in our series of Public Domain CD ROMs. The
- 4main reason for number five was to produce a CD that was for the
- 4Risc PC and also StrongARM compatible. The number of phone calls
- 4that I received asking me what would work on a RiscPC and what
- 4wouldn't prompted me to check every file in the library.
-
- 4I lost count at the number of times a hard reset was required but
- 4I'm pleased to say that my SA RiscPC didn't let me down once.
-
- 4I hope that you enjoy the CD and I hope that in the future there
- 4will be enough new software for number six.
-
- 4To add extra value the CD also contains almost 600 etext from The
- 4Project Gutenburg. These are the releases from Jan 96 to Jun 97.
-
- 4I have also collected a large number of GIF/JPEG files with a
- 4space theme including Star Trek JPEGs.
-
- 4What must make this a CD to own is the number of truely stunning
- 4demos that are now being written to use the power of the RiscPC
- 4SA owners will most certainly benifit from the extra power this
- 4chip offers.
-
-
- The following PD was used in the production of this CD
-
- 4!NameTidy v1.15a by Wayne Drury (renaming files from the net)
- 4!EnumDir v1.10 by Simon Hatliff (listing directories to text files)
- 4!StrongEd v4.21 by Guttorm ArmStrong Vik (database text files)
- 4!ArcFS v0.73a by Mike Smith (testing the gold CD version)
- 4!FYEO2 v2.02 by Frank Lyonnet (looking at the JPEGs)
-
- 4The total production time must be around 300 hours. This includes:
-
- 4a) Downloading and sourcing the latest versions of software.
-
- 4b) Changing from spark and zip archives to ArcFSArc, with the
- 4 exception of the Project Gutenburg files. This allows all the
- 4 software to be accessed using a single dearchiver and also helps
- 4 me find those archives that just will not open.
-
- 4c) Check that all filenames conform to the ISO format. Rename those
- 4 that contain illegal characters.
-
- 4d) Testing each program on a SA RiscPC. Please note however that
- 4 while I state that I have tested each program that only means
- 4 that it will load, without crashing the machine, and then
- 4 survive a light testing. It would be almost impossible to test
- 4 each file to destruction.
-
- 4e) Making the initial directory structure and then produce the
- 4 initial database.
-
- 4f) From the initial database produce the jump tables to allow each
- 4 archive to be opened from the database.
-
- 4g) Add the program descriptions to the database.
-
- 4h) Check the database for errors and problems with the jump tables.
-
- 4i) Make another check of the internet for any new or updated items,
- 4 that was Sunday 30 June 1997. Found some great new demos and
- 4 around 40 updates.
-
- 4j) Produce the first gold disc.
-
- 4k) Check each file on the gold disc. This means opening over
- 4 2200 archives from the database!!
-
- 4l) Correct any errors, I only found around a dozen problems with
- 4 the initial gold disc. Note too bad considering the number of
- 4 archives. I have also moved any program that automatically
- 4 loads into a sub-directory called 'InHere' in the archive so
- 4 that you have the option of not opening it. This mainly applies
- 4 to the desktop customising apps that like to change the desktop
- 4 furniture and sprites without asking first!
- 4 I just can't find the reason why a number of Gutenburg archives
- 4 cause my machine to lock up when accessing them. I have removed
- 4 them from the CD.
-
- 4m) Added quite a few updates emailed directly by authors and also
- 4 checked a few web sites. Added these to the final version and
- 4 updated the database.
-
- 4n) Friday 4th July 1997, PM. Add the latest version of WBModules
- 4 from Clares Micro Supplies, David was kind enough to email this
- 4 version which has just been completed.
-
- 4o Write the final gold disc and check the whole thing again.
-
- 4p) Have KL Supplies of Bridgewater make the glass master; have
- 4 TJ reproductions produce the film for the CD and inserts and
- 4 finally KL Supplies produce the 1000 copies required.
- 4

- 4Enjoy
