- !Help for !HardApps
- =-----------------=
-
- 1'st thing to note, is that there is lots of help on other subjects. Just Run
- the application, click middle button, and go acoss on Help, and the choose
- your subject. Also, this application supports !Help, so just load it up if
- you get a bit stuck or you want to know what an icon does etc
-
-
-
- Intro
- =---=
-
- It was the dawn of the 21st centuary. Man had created the RiscPC, and with
- it, the APPS DIRECTORY!!!!! This was a bottomless (well, 80Meg) pit into
- which any application could be flung. And every full moon (or if you clicked
- on the ResourceFS icon on the Iconbar), they would reappear in all their
- glory. And they could RUN and all would rejoice.
-
- Meanwhile, back on planet earth: Unfortunatly, all the rest of the Population
- only had RiscOS 3.0 or RiscOS 3.1 which had ResourecFS, but no APPS
- DIRECTORY. All that !HardApps does is allow PreRiscPC owners to add any
- application they want into the ResourceFS by making an Apps directory
- (refered to in this text as the ROMApps directory) on their hard drive.
-
- OK, How do I run it!
- =------------------=
-
- Double click on the !HardApps icon. It will show you a nice window with a
- pretty title (designed by Chris!) and it will ask you to drag your ROMApps
- directory to the window.
-
- Now, you haven't got a ROMApps directory have you? Well, the ROMApps
- directory is the place where all the Applications that you wish to add to the
- ResourceFS are going to have to go. So, first you must decide where you want
- it.
-
- Points to note about where to house your ROMApps Directory:
- =---------------------------------------------------------=
-
- You cannot (well you can, but you must deinstall ROMApps first) move the
- Directory or Rename it after you have decided where to put it, so It may be
- an idea to hide it somewhere so it doesn't matter what it is called.
-
- It is a good idea to stick it inside one of the Applications on the root of
- your hard drive, eg !System. Because then it is hidden, and you aren't likely
- to move or Rename it.
-
- You will be able to view the directory easilly (as a feature of !HardApps),
- so it doesn't matter how deep you go down your directory tree, however, the
- lower you go, the more chance that you accidentally change the path (ie
- rename one of the directories that it is in, thus moving it, thus needing for
- it to be reinstalled.
-
- The ROMApps directory doesn't need to be called ROMApps, it may be called
- anything, I am mearly refering to it as ROMApps to make sure you know what I
- am going on about. You can have it called any name. eg Doris, Pobbles etc
-
- I think thats about it. eg I have my ROMApps directory just inside my
- !System Application which is on the Root of my hard drive. I am not going to
- rename it, or delete it. Therfore, it is very safe!
-
- How to I set my ROMApps directory
- =-------------------------------=
-
- Several choices here:
-
- 1) Type in the path into the writable icon, making sure that you use the
- drive number of your hard drive, and not it's name.
-
- eg ADFS::4.$.!System.ROMApps and NOT ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!System.ROMApps
-
- 2) Drag the actual directory you want to use as you ROMApps directory to the
- window. The icon will change to the name of your directory.
-
- 3) Drag an Application to the window. The icon will change to your
- Application but with a directory called ROMApps in it.
-
- Do not worry if the directory doesn't exist, !HardApps will create it when
- you install it.
-
-
- Now What? After I have chosen my directory?
- =-----------------------------------------=
-
- Sorry for that title, but never mind. It conveys what this is about.
-
- Basically, all you do is click on the install icon. The disc will wizz (no
- lights I'm afraid!) and after a while, there will either be an error, or it
- will ask you whether you want it to fiddle with your !boot. If you have a
- normal boot sequence, then it is probably wise to click on OK. Dodn't wory,
- as there will be a copy of your original !Boot file inside the !HardApps
- directory on your hard Dirve.
-
- If there is an error during the instalation process (not while it is altering
- your boot), then go into the directory you wanted, and delete the !HardApps
- application in it, if there is one. Then do something about the problem, and
- try to install again.
-
- !HardApps will just add 4 line to your !Boot file if you allow it, but incase
- there is a mess up, it also saves a copy of the original !Boot file inside
- it's Application in the ROMApps directory.
-
- OK, done that and no problens yet.
- =--------------------------------=
-
- If you've done that, and there are no problems yet, then you should be faced
- with another window with a couple of icons on it.
-
- Also, your Resources:Apps directory should be open, and in it you should be
- able to see the !HardApps applciation along with any other application that
- you happened to have in the ROMApps directory.
-
- From now on, this will be the window you will see when you load up !HardApps.
- The icons do the following:
-
- Save Module : This gives you the choice of being able to save a module each
- time you rescan the directory. Then, when you start the computer up, instead
- of rescanning the directory and then creating a new module, !HardApps will
- just load up the module already created. However, this does mean you will
- have to rescan the ROMApps directory every time you add something. Which is a
- good idea any way.
-
- Save options : This saves the options (or rather 'option' at the moment due
- to the lack of good ideas on the originality front).
-
- Open ROMApps Directory : This allows you to open the view to the your ROMApps
- directory, and this is the Easiest way of adding Applications to it.
-
- Rescan ROMApps directory : When clicked, this will rescan the ROMApps
- directory, and anything in it will now appear in the ResourceFS apps
- directory (HardApps will quit after you click on this but it can be easily
- loaded up again from the ResourceFS if necessary).
-
- And that's about it.
- =------------------=
-
- As the tite sujests, that's about it. Things to note:
-
- The code to create the module was written in 2 hours starting from 11:45pm 2
- days ago, after having a very (very, very) rough night out at a party.
-
- Chris doesn't like to press the return key. This means that all his programs
- tend to turn out on one line. The difference in computing style can be
- easilly seen if you brows through the desktop file (if I haven't crunched
- it).
-
- Any money, drugs, alcahol, small plastic toys, bottles of coke, those
- horrible things that go plunk-plunk fizz that you have after a party when you
- can't stop showing the back of your throat to everybody, to me or Chris at
- the below address. Me if you want a swift reply, Chris if you don't mind just
- waiting that little bit longer!
