- Catalogue No.20
-
- Welcome to the Datafile Public Domain and shareware Library.
-
- We have now been given the Archimedes World 'Power PD' award for this
- version of the catalogue. Quite a few things have changed since versions
- 19 & 20.
-
- I have spent at least sixty hours preparing the catalogue texts for this
- paperless version. Dirk, our amazing programmer, developed two
- applications that compared the disc and program size information contained
- in the catalogue to the real thing on our three SCSI drives. (2 gigabytes
- in total). This produced a hugh list of items to change. This has now
- been done. Every file in the library is now archived, at last we have
- reached the 100% archiving goal. As a matter of interest the library has
- in excess of 9700 archived files on over 1250 discs.
-
- The !Ordering system will now retain your creditcard information and the
- bug that reverted all orders to DD has been fixed.
- This is what Sue & I want you to do.
-
- • Please send all orders whenever possible to us on an 800k disc.
-
- • Name your order file with either your name or customer number and do
- the same on the disc label.
-
- • Try and recycle your Mail Lite envelopes.
-
-
- We are now fully automatted and Dirk's system will take your requested
- files off our SCSI drives and send them to the auto loader disc
- duplicator.
- If any disc has more than 8k free it will be filled with random files.
-
- As long as you order more than two Pic'n'Mix discs or three standard
- discs we will send your order disc back full of randomly selected files.
- Another one of Dirk's applications.
-
- This system will allow us to continue to despatch all orders on the same
- day that they are received and allow us all to be a lot more
- environmentally friendly.
-
-
- This disc contains the latest version of !ArcFS. Release 2 v.0.65.
-
- Please use this version of !ArcFS but keep a copy of version 0.57.
-
- Just in case you have problems with the new version.
-
- This will often show as a data corrupt error.
-
- WE CAN OFFER THE FOLLOWING PD & SHAREWARE

- HELP THE DATAFILE GROW
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- If you are the author of any PD in the catalogue and you have
- updated the version that I already have please send me a copy. I
- will return your disc with software of your choice. If it's a
- new piece of software then I am usually quite generous in the
- number of free discs you can have in exchange.
-
-
- All AMF Software titles have been removed from the library. They
- will NOT be accepted as swaps as they all have been removed at their
- authors request.
-
- Also note that programs from the Norwich Computer Services Careware
- discs are not all PD. I have spoken to Adrian Looke and most are
- exclusive to them, for example, Ballroom Blitz.
-
- If you are sending GIF files or sprite files please ensure that they
- are of the highest standard and that their file names are not in the
- catalogue already.
-
-
- THE PROGRAMS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~
- I am not a software house and while I do try to ensure the programs
- run as they should, I can offer no guarantees. I just haven’t got
- the time to give every program a 100% check. I would prefer you to
- contact the author yourself if you experience problems or find bugs.
- Please keep me informed of updates, please!!!

- {!killer }{free }
- !Killer
- ~~~~~~~
-
- The PD & Shareware from the library is guaranteed free of all
- viruses known to !Killer version 1.381 (02 Nov 92) available
- from Pineapple Software. Tel: 081 599 1476. This package is
- the best possible virus protection available for the Acorn
- range of 32 bit computers and costs £28.20 inclusive. This price
- includes all upgrades for a period of 12 months.
-
- I have no commercial dealings with Pineapple Software and this is
- my own personal opinion.
-
- {arcfs 2}{2 }
- !ArcFSr/w 2
- ~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- Another piece of software that I wouldn’t be without is ArcFSr/w.
- I use this application daily. It will allow you alter the contents
- of an archived file without the need to de-archive it first.
-
- The restrictions of five open files at once has been removed and the
- number of open files is now only limited by available memory. If you
- get an outside file error from !ArcFS or the archive you have just
- opened is empty!! or a ‘Bad Header’ error then the version you are
- using is too old for the archive you are trying to access.
-
- Highly recommended.
-
- Written by Mark Smith and available from Verticle Twist for £24.99

-
- 4 -*-*-*-*- How to Pay -*-*-*-*-
-
- Cheques and Postal Orders: make these payable to The Datafile.
- Cross both to be on the safe side. Especially important with Postal
- Orders.
-
- Due to the fees charged by the clearing banks I am forced to request
- that if you send a cheque or postal order for under £5 that you add
- a further thirty pence to your total. The ordering system will do
- this automatically for you.
-
- Cash: If you must send cash please make sure that it is secure and
- don’t include any small change if at all possible. I cannot take
- any responsibility for monies going astray in the postal system. It
- is best to sellotape money to a piece of card. If you are sending
- more than a few pounds in cash, it is a very good idea to register
- your letter as a record of the post office delivering it to the
- above address. If you are only sending a small order, under say £5
- I am quite happy to accept stamps as payment. As many 25p stamps as
- possible then make up the total with smaller value stamps.
-
- CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS.
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- No minimum transaction value for plastic. If you wish to pay
- by credit card and your order is under £5 then the 30p rule applies.
- Again the ordering system will add this for you automatically.
-
- Please give your card number, the expiry date, the name of the card
- holder, as stated on the card and the card holders address including
- the correct postcade. If the delivery address differs from the
- address known to the credit card company please give both addresses
- and the reason why the addresses differ. This is to avoid creditcard
- theft and for no other reason.
-
- <<< A request to authors >>>
-
- It is becoming quite common for some authors to bar libraries like
- the Datafile from distributing their work if any charges are made
- for media and p&p, only allowing bulletin boards to distribute their
- work.
-
- I would ask them to think again. A lot of users do not have access
- to modems and if they do then BT are the real winners, look at their
- yearly profits!!! We are not running libraries to get rich quick
- but to offer a fast friendly service and cover our costs.
-
- Wanted Applications, modules, games, ect.
-
- Nicholas Metcalfe has asked if a small section of this file could be
- used to ask PD and Shareware authors to write apps and the like to
- fill the needs of users when they can't find what they want and are
- unable to write it for themselves. Why not. Nick starts the ball
- rolling.
-
- Wanted a module that can:
-
- Automatically load a printer driver and if possible set up the page
- limits whenever a request is made from another application to print
- something. Under Windows this facility is provided and would be a
- welcome module for Nick. His Dad finds it complicated when it's time
- to print from his Arc.
-
- Wanted by Ryan Li:
-
- An application to convert absolute/machine code to basic!!
-
-
- Any takers?
-
-
- Should Public Domain Libraries make money?
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- This question seems to be asked by authors and customers on a
- regular basis. It's about time I said something about the subject
- as Sue & I run one of the biggest libraries.
-
- You get what you pay for and this applies to the services you get
- from PD libraries. The Datafile is by no means the most expensive
- library or to be honest the cheapest. If we make anything from
- running the library this 'extra' pays for my time and Sue's. After
- all Sue left her part time job so that she could work for the library
- and keep up our promise of same day dispatch of all orders. It also
- means that there is a friendly voice on the end of the phone during
- the day to take your orders when I'm at work.
-
- Also remember there are more overheads than discs and postage.
-
- Advertising, Heating, Rent, Electricity, Phone/Fax, Stationary,
- Printer consumables, Bank Charges, maintainance of equipment,
- VAT and TAX to name a few.
-
- In the end it's up to you our customers. If you feel that we are
- charging too much for our services then you are free to use another
- library. We would like to think that once you have tried us you will
- stay with us. We aim to be the fastest while providing a friendly
- service. If we get this right tell your friends. If we get it
- wrong, please tell us.
-
-
- 1While we are taking about PD prices, how would you like 325 discs of
- 1PD and Shareware for the equivalent price of 8p each. Yes I did say
- 18p each!!! We are soon to produce our first Acorn PD/Shareware CD
- 1ROM with a new company called Desktop Laminations. It will contain
- 1265megs of great software with a cross section of all that is available
- 1for only £30 fully inclusive of p&p and VAT.
-
- 1If you are a registered user of the Datafile you can claim a £5
- 1discount. If you are not yet registered why not take advantage of this
- 1offer. Register and order thr CD and your registration will only cost
- 1a couple of pounds.
-
-
-
- 5{URM001} {IPDCD-1, CD ROM,2554}
- 4PDCD-1 - 265 megabytes of great PD, Freeware and Shareware all on
- 4one disc that can't let you down.
-
- 5{URM002} {IDiscount, 0,-426}
- 4Click on RM002 for your registered users £5 discount ONLY if you
- 4are registered.
-
- Our second PDCD ROM is nearly ready.
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- This has the same general theme of Public Domain.
- Let's be honest there isn't enough PD and Shareware around to make up a
- Clip Art CD, a Utilities CD ect. No risky pictures on this one!!!!
-
-
- • All software tested on the RISC PC.
- • A great mixture amounting to over 415 megs.
- • A printed index book.
- • Click and run files from the database.
- • All utilities, games and demos are held in archives.
- • All this for only £33 fully inclusive.
-
-
-
- Finally the RISC PC
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- I'm sure that a lot of PD and Shareware will cause problems of one kind
- or another. This time however, unlike the jump from RISC OS2 to RISC
- OS3, I won't be able to find the time to check the library for those
- apps that won't run. It took three months of hard work last time!!
-
- If you are the lucky owner of a RISC PC then please keep me informed
- as to what doesn't run.
-
- I am unable to replace programs that don't work, your first port of
- call should be with the author but unless they have a RISC PC then
- they more that likely can't help you. I should think that most of
- the larger applications will run. Demos that use STracker modules
- will not run or any STracker players that use Hugo's PM module. The
- play only version of Digital Symphony, Digital CD works fine. QTM
- will run and may take over the place of Hugo's PM module.
