  15. Welcome to the Datafile Public Domain and shareware Library.
  16.  
  17. We have now been given the Archimedes World 'Power PD' award for this
  18. version of the catalogue.  Quite a few things have changed since versions
  19.  19 & 20.
  20.  
  21. I have spent at least sixty hours preparing the catalogue texts for this
  22. paperless version.  Dirk, our amazing programmer, developed two
  23. applications that compared the disc and program size information contained
  24. in the catalogue to the real thing on our three SCSI drives. (2 gigabytes
  25. in total). This produced a hugh list of items to change.  This has now
  26. been done.  Every file in the library is now archived, at last we have
  27. reached the 100% archiving goal. As a matter of interest the library has
  28. in excess of 9700 archived files on over 1250 discs.
  29.  
  30. The !Ordering system will now retain your creditcard information and the
  31. bug that reverted all orders to DD has been fixed.
  32. This is what Sue & I want you to do.

  34. •  Please send all orders whenever possible to us on an 800k disc.

  36. •  Name your order file with either your name or customer number and do
  37.    the same on the disc label.

  39. •  Try and recycle your Mail Lite envelopes.

  42. We are now fully automatted and Dirk's system will take your requested
  43. files off our SCSI drives and send them to the auto loader disc
  44. duplicator.
  45. If any disc has more than 8k free it will be filled with random files.
  46.  
  47. As long as you order more than two Pic'n'Mix discs or three standard
  48. discs we will send your order disc back full of randomly selected files.

  51. This system will allow us to continue to despatch all orders on the same
  52. day that they are received and allow us all to be a lot more
  53. environmentally friendly.

  81. If you are the author of any PD in the catalogue and you have
  82. updated the version that I already have please send me a copy.  I
  83. will return your disc with software of your choice.  If it's a
  84. new piece of software then I am usually quite generous in the
  85. number of free discs you can have in exchange.

  88. All AMF Software titles have been removed from the library. They
  89. will NOT be accepted as swaps as they all have been removed at their
  90. authors request.

  92. Also note that programs from the Norwich Computer Services Careware
  93. discs are not all PD.  I have spoken to Adrian Looke and most are
  94. exclusive to them, for example, Ballroom Blitz.

  96. If you are sending GIF files or sprite files please ensure that they
  97. are of the highest standard and that their file names are not in the
  98. catalogue already.

  103. I am not a software house and while I do try to ensure the programs
  104. run as they should, I can offer no guarantees. I just haven’t got
  105. the time to give every program a 100% check.  I would prefer you to
  106. contact the author yourself if you experience problems or find bugs.

  139. 3    If you have purchased discs from the library in the past and
  140. 3    the discs have been updated. (Newer versions of applications
  141. 3    added or programs have been archived and more added to the
  142. 3    disc). Then send the original disc/s back to me and I will
  143. 3    recopy the disc/s and send them back to you within a couple
  144. 3    of days.  At the moment it’s still the same day.

  146. 3    If you require this service for Pic'n'Mix discs we will
  147. 3    require a list of the programs and disc numbers with the
  148. 3    update request.  It speeds up the service.

  249. viruses known to !Killer version 1.381 (02 Nov 92) available
  250. from Pineapple Software.  Tel: 081 599 1476.  This package is
  251. the best possible virus protection available for the Acorn
  252. range of 32 bit computers and costs £28.20 inclusive.  This price
  253. includes all upgrades for a period of 12 months.

  262. Another piece of software that I wouldn’t be without is ArcFSr/w.
  263. I use this application daily.  It will allow you alter the contents
  264. of an archived file without the need to de-archive it first.

  266. The restrictions of five open files at once has been removed and the
  267. number of open files is now only limited by available memory. If you
  268. get an outside file error from !ArcFS or the archive you have just
  269. opened is empty!! or a ‘Bad Header’ error then the version you are
  270. using is too old for the archive you are trying to access.

  279. Cheques and Postal Orders:   make these payable to The Datafile.
  280. Cross both to be on the safe side.  Especially important with Postal
  281. Orders.

  283. Due to the fees charged by the clearing banks I am forced to request
  284. that if you send a cheque or postal order for under £5 that you add
  285. a further thirty pence to your total.  The ordering system will do
  286. this automatically for you.

  288. Cash:  If you must send cash please make sure that it is secure and
  289. don’t include any small change if at all possible.  I cannot take
  290. any responsibility for monies going astray in the postal system. It
  291. is best to sellotape money to a piece of card.  If you are sending
  292. more than a few pounds in cash, it is a very good idea to register
  293. your letter as a record of the post office delivering it to the
  294. above address.  If you are only sending a small order, under say £5
  295. I am quite happy to accept stamps as payment. As many 25p stamps as
  296. possible then make up the total with smaller value stamps.

  301. No minimum transaction value for plastic.  If you wish to pay
  302. by credit card and your order is under £5 then the 30p rule applies.

  305. Please give your card number, the expiry date, the name of the card
  306. holder, as stated on the card and the card holders address including
  307. the correct postcade.  If the delivery address differs from the
  308. address known to the credit card company please give both addresses
  309. and the reason why the addresses differ. This is to avoid creditcard
  310. theft and for no other reason.

  314. It is becoming quite common for some authors to bar libraries like
  315. the Datafile from distributing their work if any charges are made
  316. for media and p&p, only allowing bulletin boards to distribute their
  317. work.

  319. I would ask them to think again.  A lot of users do not have access
  320. to modems and if they do then BT are the real winners, look at their
  321. yearly profits!!!  We are not running libraries to get rich quick
  322. but to offer a fast friendly service and cover our costs.

  324. Wanted Applications, modules, games, ect.

  326. Nicholas Metcalfe has asked if a small section of this file could be
  327. used to ask PD and Shareware authors to write apps and the like to
  328. fill the needs of users when they can't find what they want and are
  329. unable to write it for themselves.  Why not.  Nick starts the ball
  330. rolling.

  334. Automatically load a printer driver and if possible set up the page
  335. limits whenever a request is made from another application to print
  336. something. Under Windows this facility is provided and would be a
  337. welcome module for Nick. His Dad finds it complicated when it's time

  351. This question seems to be asked by authors and customers on a
  352. regular basis.  It's about time I said something about the subject
  353. as Sue & I run one of the biggest libraries.
  354.  
  355. You get what you pay for and this applies to the services you get
  356. from PD libraries.  The Datafile is by no means the most expensive
  357. library or to be honest the cheapest.  If we make anything from
  358. running the library this 'extra' pays for my time and Sue's.  After
  359. all Sue left her part time job so that she could work for the library
  360. and keep up our promise of same day dispatch of all orders.  It also
  361. means that there is a friendly voice on the end of the phone during
  362. the day to take your orders when I'm at work.

  364. Also remember there are more overheads than discs and postage.
  365.  
  366. Advertising, Heating, Rent, Electricity, Phone/Fax, Stationary,
  367. Printer consumables, Bank Charges, maintainance of equipment,
  368. VAT and TAX to name a few.

  370. In the end it's up to you our customers.  If you feel that we are
  371. charging too much for our services then you are free to use another
  372. library.  We would like to think that once you have tried us you will
  373. stay with us.  We aim to be the fastest while providing a friendly
  374. service.  If we get this right tell your friends.  If we get it

  416. Finally the RISC PC

  419. I'm sure that a lot of PD and Shareware will cause problems of one kind
  420. or another.  This time however, unlike the jump from RISC OS2 to RISC
  421. OS3, I won't be able to find the time to check the library for those
  422. apps that won't run.  It took three months of hard work last time!!
  423.  
  424. If you are the lucky owner of a RISC PC then please keep me informed
  425. as to what doesn't run.

  427. I am unable to replace programs that don't work, your first port of
  428. call should be with the author but unless they have a RISC PC then
  429. they more that likely can't help you.  I should think that most of
  430. the larger applications will run.  Demos that use STracker modules
  431. will not run or any STracker players that use Hugo's PM module.  The
  432. play only version of Digital Symphony, Digital CD works fine.  QTM
  433. will run and may take over the place of Hugo's PM module.
