- Comments or suggestions on how you think such a co-op should be run and what
- it should do:
-
- I think that a co-op marketing approach is a fantastic idea. I
- would be very interested in participating in such a setup. This would
- be an effective and economical way for us to advertise and help in the
- distribution of our products.
-
-
- Exposure in the marketplace is of paramount importance if our products
- are to be ultimately successful. Advertising is not cheap. At least adver-
- tising that is effective is not cheap. I feel that the idea of a co-op in
- which the costs can be spread out amoung many of us with the same goal is a
- vital first step in the introduction of our products to a wider market. A
- $4000.00 ad in PC Magazine or PC World spread out amoung 20 people brings
- the cost down to a very affordable $200.00 per person. Please let me know
- how I can help with this.

- Additional notes and comments:
-
-
-
- Reading this article, I find myself agreeing with much of what is
- being said about the frustration of getting people to pay for the shareware
- type products. Although we have been blessed with quite a bit of success,
- due mostly to the review of File Express in the February issue of Popular
- Computing, I feel that there are still alot of people using our product
- who have not yet paid for it, either because of procrastination or because
- they have no intention of doing so.
-
- I have given a lot of thought to this problem and have decided to
- make the following changes in the File Express package and marketing:
-
- - We will no longer provide the entire documentation on disk but
- rather a condensed version that will describe the main features
- and hints to the advanced features. When a person sends the
- payment to become a registered owner, they will receive the
- entire documentation in spiral bound form, receive notification
- of updates available, and telephone support.
-
- - We are currently in the process of developing a business graphics
- package that will be call ExpressGraph and will interface with
- File Express. All registered owners will be able to receive
- ExpressGraph for $5.00 to cover the costs of sending it out. It
- should be ready around the end of March, '85.
-
- - We have decided to do some sort of advertising nationally. This
- is why I am very interested in the marketing co-op concept. I
- hope it doesn't take too long to get set up.
-
- In fact, the more I think about it, the more excited I become
- about this. This could be a great turning point for the better
- for the shareware concept. A national co-operative effort would
- draw national attention. National attention will draw national
- customers. I can see that the Review and Acceptance Committee
- would play an important part in all this, because only if we
- can ensure that quality software is allowed into the group will we
- be able to maintain the publics confidence in Shareware.
-
- I work during the day at Ryan McFarland in the testing and Quality
- Assurance department. It would be a natural for me to be on
- this committee.
-
- Let me know how things are progressing and if I can be of any
- help.
-
- Sincerely,
-
- David M. Berdan

-
- P.S. I am also enclosing the latest version of File Express for your
- Software Library.
