- ALFREDO'S PERILOUS PITFALL
- Program by Richard Deroacher
- Text by Dave Moorman
-
-
- Alfredo began as a little Apple
- Guy, a mere 64 pixels of high-res
- graphics for the Apple II computer --
- published on the orginal Softdisk
- Monthly disk magazine back in the
- early Eighties. The people at
- Softdisk, Inc. refused to waste
- anything and succeeded to port little
- Alfie from the over-hyped Apple II to
- the clearly superior C-64. (A [lot] of
- LOADSTAR's content in the first couple
- of years was brought over from
- Softdisk Monthly.)
-
- Remember, back then most any
- animation on a computer screen was a
- miracle. Alfredo is a tiny 8x8 pixel
- character -- but his adventures still
- have a certain charm. The Magicians of
- Maine (Tim Vlk and Richard Deroacher)
- took on the challenge of giving
- Alfredo yet another Adventure (on
- issue 197). Richard then added his own
- Adventure to the Saga on issue 199.
-
- And Our Unfortunate Protagonist
- now comes to you in a "remake,"
- enhanced with a musical score that I
- find absolutely delightful!
-
- Today, if I were taking on an
- Alfredo Adventure, I would probably
- use sprites for the character, and a
- bunch of TBS screen files made with
- Mr.MICK. And yet, would the increased
- detail really make Alfie better? Did
- "talkies" improve Charlie Chaplin? Was
- the remake of [The Stepford Wives]
- really better than the 1978 version?
- (OK, it was -- but you get my point. I
- hope!)
-
- Anyway, here is Alfredo, in all
- his black and white, stick figure
- glory, caught in a world of perpetual
- peril.
