  2.       ALFREDO'S PERILOUS PITFALL

  7.     Alfredo began as a little Apple
  8. Guy, a mere 64 pixels of high-res
  9. graphics for the Apple II computer --
  10. published on the orginal Softdisk
  11. Monthly disk magazine back in the
  12. early Eighties. The people at
  13. Softdisk, Inc. refused to waste
  14. anything and succeeded to port little
  15. Alfie from the over-hyped Apple II to
  16. the clearly superior C-64. (A [lot] of
  17. LOADSTAR's content in the first couple
  18. of years was brought over from
  19. Softdisk Monthly.)
  20.  
  21.     Remember, back then most any
  22. animation on a computer screen was a
  23. miracle. Alfredo is a tiny 8x8 pixel
  24. character -- but his adventures still
  25. have a certain charm. The Magicians of
  26. Maine (Tim Vlk and Richard Deroacher)
  27. took on the challenge of giving
  28. Alfredo yet another Adventure (on
  29. issue 197). Richard then added his own
  30. Adventure to the Saga on issue 199.

  32.     And Our Unfortunate Protagonist
  33. now comes to you in a "remake,"
  34. enhanced with a musical score that I
  35. find absolutely delightful!

  37.     Today, if I were taking on an
  38. Alfredo Adventure, I would probably
  39. use sprites for the character, and a
  40. bunch of TBS screen files made with
  41. Mr.MICK. And yet, would the increased
  42. detail really make Alfie better? Did
  43. "talkies" improve Charlie Chaplin? Was
  44. the remake of [The Stepford Wives]
  45. really better than the 1978 version?
  46. (OK, it was -- but you get my point. I
  47. hope!)

  49.     Anyway, here is Alfredo, in all
  50. his black and white, stick figure
  51. glory, caught in a world of perpetual
  52. peril.
