- INTRODUCTION
- ------------
-
- AWARI is one of the beans-in-pits
- games generally known under the name
- of "Mankala" or "Mancala". Mankala is
- an ancient game played from Africa to
- the Philippines.
-
- The board is divided into six pits
- on each side. Initially there are
- three beans in each pit, for a total
- of thirty-six beans. In addition,
- there are two home pits at the ends.
-
- A move is made by taking all the
- beans from a pit on your side.
- Starting with the pit immediately to
- the right, these beans are "sown" one
- at a time in each pit working around
- the board counter-clockwise.
-
- A turn consists of one or two
- moves. If the last bean of your first
- move is sown in your home pit, you
- must make a second move.
-
- If the last bean is sown in an
- empty pit, and the opposite pit is not
- empty, all beans in the opposite pit,
- together with the last bean sown are
- "captured" and moved to your home pit.
-
- When either side is empty, the
- game is over. The player with the most
- beans in his home pit is the winner.
- If both players have the same number
- of beans in their home pit, the game
- is a draw, and there is no winner.
-
- In this computer version the home
- pits are colored blue and red. The
- blue home pit belongs to the player
- with the bottom pits on the screen.
- And the red home pit belongs to the
- player with the top pits. The bottom
- player moves first.

- NAVIGATION
- ----------
-
- The pointer can be moved by a
- mouse in port 1, or a joystick in
- port 2, or the keyboard cursor keys.
-
- For the joystick, the FIRE button
- and [F7] are used as the left and
- right mouse buttons, respectively.
-
- For the keyboard, [SPACE] and
- [RETURN] can be used as the left mouse
- button, and [F7] as the right mouse
- button.
-
- The left mouse button is used to
- make a selection. A selection can also
- be made with an indicated [KEY]. While
- the program is "busy", the arrow
- pointer will be yellow. The program
- will not process mouse clicks or key
- presses while the arrow is yellow. So
- if you want to select something while
- the arrow is yellow; press a key and
- wait, or hold down the left mouse
- button, or its equivalent, and wait.
-
- Note, [STOP] has been disabled.
-
- All white areas are "clickable".
-
- There are two player buttons; [A]
- for the blue home pit, and [B] for the
- red home pit. Use these buttons to
- toggle the player between human and
- computer. If you want to toggle both,
- use the right mouse button.
-
- There are two command buttons;
- Play and Quit.
-
- PLAY starts a new game using the
- current options.
-
- QUIT quits AWARI, and returns you
- to LOADSTAR or BASIC.
