- A TOUR OF HOLLY
-
- A Photo-Impressionist Slide Show
- by Dave Moorman
-
-
- When it comes to digital cameras,
- I want one with a FlashRAM card,
- through-the-lens view finder, and 35
- to 100 zoom. On the otherhand, I had
- only $44 while at WalMart last week.
-
- So I got a little camera with a
- lens about the size of a "promise
- ring" diamond. Its high resolution is
- 640 x 480 -- about what one gets from
- a VHS Camcorder. But that is more than
- enough for my current craziness. My
- little camera fits in my pocket and
- takes 26 images before I need to
- download it.
-
- All the better to feed my new
- passion!
-
- Photo-Impressionism is not exactly
- new. Walt Harned is the grand master
- at making a photograph into a work of
- art. But I am having a ball learning
- my way around the media/genre.
-
- Using my PC, I load the photo into
- Adobe Photo Deluxe to crop/compress it
- for C-64 work. A 320 x 200 (slightly
- scrunched) image works best on the VIC
- II screen. Photo Deluxe's "export to
- GIF" function allows switching off the
- interlacing -- which is necessary for
- GoDot. I use 64Copy to move the GIFs
- to a D64 disk image, where GoDot/VICE
- can easily get to it.
-
- And GoDot does a great job of
- bringing the image into the C-64! The
- colors usually need some tweaking.
- Contrast and Brightness will perform
- interesting color shifts. Then the
- Palette can be used to replace some
- colors with others.
-
- GoDot has a MOD called "Raster
- IFLI", which pixelates colors,
- creating better blends at the cost of
- some definition. Sometimes it helps
- (as with the Downtown image), and
- sometimes a blockier color rendering
- is better (the Parsonage).
-
- This "tour" occured one afternoon
- as I went about my business around
- town. Only the Parsonage and Church
- images were originally from a 35mm
- camera. And to be strictly honest, the
- pictures of the hay shed and grain
- elevators were taken in Coolidge, KS
- -- because that was where I was when I
- saw the scene!
-
- All you need to be a Photo-
- Impressionistic artist is an eye that
- knows what you like to see. You also
- need a PC, a digital camera, a good
- photo program like Photo Deluxe, and
- GoDot.
-
- Many (most) of you do not live on
- the prairie. Show us the world you see
- every day. If you are not loaded down
- with computer equipment, send me six
- to ten of your photos and I will turn
- them into appropriately sized
- non-interlaced GIFs on a 1541 disk. In
- fact, I will do the first 20 such
- orders for free. When you get the disk
- back, get cracking with GoDot! Then
- put them in a slide show and share
- your world with us.
-
- In the process, you will see
- ordinary things around you in a new
- way.
