  4.    A Photo-Impressionist Slide Show

  8.     When it comes to digital cameras,
  9. I want one with a FlashRAM card,
  10. through-the-lens view finder, and 35
  11. to 100 zoom. On the otherhand, I had
  12. only $44 while at WalMart last week.
  13.  
  14.     So I got a little camera with a
  15. lens about the size of a "promise
  16. ring" diamond. Its high resolution is
  17. 640 x 480 -- about what one gets from
  18. a VHS Camcorder. But that is more than
  19. enough for my current craziness. My
  20. little camera fits in my pocket and
  21. takes 26 images before I need to
  22. download it.

  24.     All the better to feed my new
  25. passion!

  27.     Photo-Impressionism is not exactly
  28. new. Walt Harned is the grand master
  29. at making a photograph into a work of
  30. art. But I am having a ball learning
  31. my way around the media/genre.

  33.     Using my PC, I load the photo into
  34. Adobe Photo Deluxe to crop/compress it
  35. for C-64 work. A 320 x 200 (slightly
  36. scrunched) image works best on the VIC
  37. II screen. Photo Deluxe's "export to
  38. GIF" function allows switching off the
  39. interlacing -- which is necessary for
  40. GoDot. I use 64Copy to move the GIFs
  41. to a D64 disk image, where GoDot/VICE
  42. can easily get to it.

  44.     And GoDot does a great job of
  45. bringing the image into the C-64! The
  46. colors usually need some tweaking.
  47. Contrast and Brightness will perform
  48. interesting color shifts. Then the
  49. Palette can be used to replace some
  50. colors with others.

  52.     GoDot has a MOD called "Raster
  53. IFLI", which pixelates colors,
  54. creating better blends at the cost of
  55. some definition. Sometimes it helps
  56. (as with the Downtown image), and
  57. sometimes a blockier color rendering
  58. is better (the Parsonage).

  60.     This "tour" occured one afternoon
  61. as I went about my business around
  62. town. Only the Parsonage and Church
  63. images were originally from a 35mm
  64. camera. And to be strictly honest, the
  65. pictures of the hay shed and grain
  66. elevators were taken in Coolidge, KS
  67. -- because that was where I was when I
  68. saw the scene!

  70.     All you need to be a Photo-
  71. Impressionistic artist is an eye that
  72. knows what you like to see. You also
  73. need a PC, a digital camera, a good
  74. photo program like Photo Deluxe, and
  75. GoDot.

  77.     Many (most) of you do not live on
  78. the prairie. Show us the world you see
  79. every day. If you are not loaded down
  80. with computer equipment, send me six
  81. to ten of your photos and I will turn
  82. them into appropriately sized
  83. non-interlaced GIFs on a 1541 disk. In
  84. fact, I will do the first 20 such
  85. orders for free. When you get the disk
  86. back, get cracking with GoDot! Then
  87. put them in a slide show and share
  88. your world with us.

  91. ordinary things around you in a new
  92. way.
