- What do you get when you combine the
-
- nerdiest of nerds, the ugliest ex-con,
-
- a couple of pairs of boxing gloves, a
-
- bouncing ball, and a nice ripe ready-
-
- for-the-pickin' cherry? What!? You
-
- don't know? You're wondering, 'What
-
- in the world could all those things
-
- have in common?' Well, wonder no more
-
- my friends. The answer to the riddle
-
- is PUNCH.
-
- At first glance, you may think that
-
- PUNCH is nothing more than a souped-up
-
- version of Pong. However, PUNCH
-
- deserves more attention than that
-
- first glance.
-
- Punch can be played against the
-
- computer or against a friend (or
-
- enemy.) If two people play, you'll
-
- have to decide who plays the nerd and
-
- who plays the ex-con. To play alone
-
- you'll need one joystick plugged into
-
- Port 1.
-
- And now to the rules of play. As in
-
- the ol' version of Pong, you must
-
- return each ball hit at you. But
-
- unlike Pong, you have two ways to do
-
- this. The first, and simplest, is to
-
- merely 'pong' the ball back to your
-
- opponent by moving your man's boxing
-
- gloves to the ball. The closer the
-
- ball hits to the direct center of your
-
- gloves, the straighter the return. To
-
- get sharp angles, try to block the
-
- ball towards the edges of your gloves.
-
- Each time you return a ball using this
-
- method, you get one point.
-
- The second, and more difficult,
-
- method of returning the ball is to
-
- punch it. You do this by pressing the
-
- fire button on your joystick when the
-
- ball is slightly out in front of your
-
- gloves. This causes your gloves to
-
- 'jump out', as in a punch. Because
-
- the ball is punched, the ball will
-
- return faster than if you just blocked
-
- it. Again, the angle and speed of
-
- the deflection is determined by how
-
- close (or far away) the ball hits
-
- from the center of your glove.
-
- Each time you return a shot using
-
- this method, you will receive five
-
- points. Note that this method is a
-
- bit more dangerous than blocking.
-
- Since the gloves are horizontal when
-
- punching, there is less surface area
-
- to contact the ball. This can cause
-
- shots that would have been returned
-
- with a block to be missed by a punch.
-
- When a ball is missed, the person who
-
- made the last shot is awarded ten
-
- points.
-
- Another factor of the game (this
-
- should come from common sense) is
-
- trying not to let the ball hit you in
-
- the face. If it does, (ouch! that
-
- hurts!) it will explode in your face
-
- and you will lose ten points. Well,
-
- if you can only get points deducted
-
- because of a vulnerable face, what
-
- good is having it at all?
-
- AHA! A very good question! If you
-
- remember all the way back to the
-
- beginning of this article, you will
-
- remember that I mentioned cherries.
-
- Now, what do you suppose cherries are
-
- good for (other than making bombs)?
-
- Eating, of course! Every so often,
-
- the ball will change into a cherry.
-
- You can block or punch the cherry
-
- away without any problems, but what
-
- you really want to do is eat it.
-
- All you have to do is position your
-
- face (mainly your mouth) so that the
-
- cherry will collide with it and press
-
- your fire button. Pressing the fire
-
- button will cause your mouth to open,
-
- allowing you to gulp down the
-
- oncoming fruit. If you do eat one,
-
- you're awarded a whopping 25 points.
-
- Like life, PUNCH, if you're lucky,
-
- can be a bowl of cherries.
-
- Because of the nature of this game,
-
- it does NOT connect back to LOADSTAR.
