- Have your crossword puzzles seemed
-
- a little bland lately? Have you had
-
- your fill of scrambled words? If so,
-
- maybe you're ready to cook up your
-
- own word-game. CRYPTOGRAM is a two
-
- player game that lets you and a
-
- friend challenge one another's
-
- decoding skills.
-
- CRYPTOGRAM allows you to type in
-
- messages of up to six lines that the
-
- computer then encodes for the other
-
- player. (You can either design your
-
- own code or use one provided at
-
- random by the computer.)
-
- The player wins 100 points by
-
- solving the message and can win
-
- bonuses for solving it under 30
-
- minutes; however, the player loses
-
- ten points for every hint he received
-
- during the game. By keeping up with
-
- points and time taken, you and your
-
- friend can compare your skill.
-
- So check out CRYPTOGRAM--- a little
-
- head-to-head competition might be just
-
- the spice you've been looking for.
-
- CRYPTOGRAM gives you two options to
-
- encode your message. In one option,
-
- the computer assigns a randomly
-
- chosen letter for a particular letter
-
- of the alphabet. The other option
-
- allows you to assign a specific
-
- letter for each letter of the
-
- alphabet, forming your own code.
-
- After you've decided which encoding
-
- option you want, merely type in the
-
- message, making sure to limit it to
-
- six lines. (A line drawn across the
-
- screen will show how much space you
-
- have). Be sure not to type RETURN
-
- until the message is complete.
-
- Once you've pressed RETURN, it's
-
- your friend's turn to decode the
-
- encoded message appearing at the top
-
- of the screen. At the bottom of the
-
- screen are four options he can use to
-
- break the code:
-
- 1. \ to check.
- 2. * for hint.
- 3. ^ to blank.
- 4. CHANGE
-
- To guess what the encoded letter
-
- stands for, your friend merely types
-
- the encoded letter , then the letter
-
- he's guessing. For example, if he
-
- changes "X" to "B",the bottom of the
-
- screen would look like this:
-
- CHANGE X to B.
-
- "B's" would then appear above each of
-
- the "X's" in the encoded message.
-
- If he wished to try something else
-
- for "X", he would then type in the
-
- encoded letter and then "^" (CHANGE
-
- X to ^). The spaces above the "X's" in
-
- the message then return to being
-
- blank.
-
- If your message is particularly
-
- challenging, CRYPTOGRAM allows your
-
- friend to receive hints by typing the
-
- encoded letter and then a "*" (CHANGE
-
- X to *). The correct letter then
-
- appears over the encoded letter. Each
-
- hint takes ten points off his final
-
- score.
-
- If he thinks he has solved the
-
- puzzle, pressing "\" will tell him if
-
- he's right or not. If he's wrong, the
-
- computer tells him to keep working.
-
- If he has solved your message, the
-
- computer then displays the amount of
-
- time he has taken to solve it and
-
- tallies up his final score by adding
-
- his time-bonus and subtracting ten
-
- points for each hint.
