- Letter Getter
-
- by Mark Jordan
-
- Letter Getter is a computer word
-
- game. The goal, as with most word
-
- games is to form as many words as
-
- possible. In general, the longer the
-
- words, the higher the points.
-
- Letter Getter requires two
-
- joysticks. Here's how you play.
-
- MOVING
-
- Move your eye (the one on the
-
- screen, not the one in your head)
-
- around the grid until it sets over a
-
- letter you want to use to form a
-
- word. Then hit your fire button.
-
- That letter will appear in your words
-
- column.
-
- When you take a letter, it will
-
- light up permanently on the screen.
-
- Then your opponent can use that
-
- letter if he wants. If he uses it,
-
- then you can re-use it, and so on.
-
- End each word by positioning your
-
- eye over one of the horizontal lines
-
- in the grid then pressing the fire
-
- button. If you make a mistake inside
-
- a word, put your eye on the big block
-
- in the middle of the grid and press
-
- the button. That will erase your
-
- last letter.
-
- You can't make any word longer than
-
- eight letters.
-
- SCORING
-
- The computer does all the work of
-
- keeping score for you, but you still
-
- need to know the rules so you can get
-
- the highest score possible.
-
- Scoring depends on what minimum
-
- word length you set. With a three
-
- letter minimum, you get three points
-
- for each three letter word and three
-
- more points for each additional
-
- letter in each word. "HUT" would
-
- score three, "MANY" six, and
-
- "GUMPTION" eighteen.
-
- With a four letter minimum, you
-
- would get four points for each four
-
- letter word, and again an extra three
-
- points for each letter over that.
-
- "MANY" would score four, and
-
- "GUMPTION" sixteen.
-
- Some letters (F, H, K, and Y) are
-
- worth two bonus points apiece. J, Q,
-
- X, and Z are each worth five.
-
- Words shorter than the minimum
-
- length will result in a negative
-
- score.
-
- OTHER STUFF YOU GOTTA KNOW
-
- Each round of Letter Getter is
-
- timed to last about four and a half
-
- minutes. When there's only about 30
-
- seconds left to play, a tone will
-
- sound. When the game's over, you'll
-
- hear a siren.
