-
-
- PEABODY is a versatile file-handling
-
- program. You can create files for
-
- such things as addresses, inventories,
-
- and mailing lists.
-
- The first thing the computer asks
-
- is if you want an old file. Pressing
-
- any key other than 'Y' tells the
-
- computer that you would like to start
-
- a new file from scratch.
-
- If you make a new file, you need to
-
- define the fields of the file. For
-
- example, in a mailing list we might
-
- want 6 fields (name, address 1,
-
- address 2, city, state and zip). After
-
- specifing the number of fields, you
-
- must name the fields. You will
-
- probably use names such as 'name',
-
- 'city', etc...
-
- After naming the fields, you must
-
- give your new file a name. This is
-
- the name which will be used to call up
-
- the file. In our example, we might
-
- call our file 'peabody test'. After
-
- naming our file, we are automatically
-
- taken to the main menu.
-
- The menu has many options to choose
-
- from. These options are LOAD, SAVE,
-
- ENTER, SEARCH, DUMP, PRINTOUT, NEW,
-
- and ALPHABETIZE.
-
- To ENTER new data, press the 'f7'
-
- key. You will be asked to enter the
-
- new information field by field. After
-
- all fields have been entered, a bar
-
- will appear at the bottom of the
-
- screen that says 'edit'. If you want
-
- to edit the new entry, press the 'E'
-
- key. The bar will then change to
-
- 'kill'. Press the 'K' key to erase
-
- the whole entry. Otherwise, press
-
- any other key to proceed.
-
- To search through your data, press
-
- the 'f1' key. You will then be
-
- asked for a field to search. In our
-
- example, let's say we want to search
-
- the first field (name) for the name of
-
- Jimmy Bob Wheeler. Simply press the
-
- number 1 (field one). You will then
-
- be asked for a first name. At this
-
- time you will type in 'Jimmy Bob
-
- Wheeler'. The computer will then
-
- search the data for the first name of
-
- Jimmy Bob Wheeler. When the name is
-
- found, you have the option to edit it.
-
- If you do not want to, simply press
-
- the space bar.
-
- If you want to see the entire file,
-
- then press the 'D' key for a dump. The
-
- records will be displayed in
-
- sequential order. Press the space bar
-
- to see the next entries.
-
- If you want to alphabetize your
-
- file, press the 'A' key. You will be
-
- asked what field(s) to alphabetize on.
-
- If we want to alphabetize by the city
-
- in our example, we would tell the
-
- computer to alphabetize on field four.
-
- To save your file, press the 'S'
-
- key. You will be asked to verify the
-
- fact that you want to save. You will
-
- then be asked if you are using tape.
-
- If not, the computer assumes you are
-
- using disk.
-
- To load a file, press the 'L' key.
-
- You will be asked to verify this
-
- action. Next you'll be asked if you
-
- are using tape. If not, the computer
-
- is set for the disk drive. You will
-
- then be given a list of the PEABODY
-
- files on that disk. Next, simply type
-
- in the name of the file that you want
-
- to load.
-
- We have included a sample file on
-
- this issue of LOADSTAR. It is saved
-
- under the name of PEABODY TEST. Just
-
- LOAD it and take a look. It may give
-
- you an idea of how to organize your
-
- own files. Don't worry if the data in
-
- the file seems a bit strange. After
-
- all, it's only an example!

-
- you from the burden of keying in this
-
- program. For more complete
-
- information about this program, refer

-
- Magazine.
