- PRELIMINARIES
- -------------
-
- "The Legend Lives!" is an all-text interactive work. If you familiar with
- games like "Adventure" and "Zork," you already know what to expect. If you
- have not played any text games before, you may want to wet your feet with
- one of our other Unnkulian games, such as "Unnkulia 1/2: The Salesman
- Triumphant". At the very least, have a look at the general information
- file included in this package so you will know what kinds of commands the
- program expects you to type. (You can also type "instructions" at the game
- prompt to get this information on-line.)

- PHILOSOPHY
- ----------
-
- I have tried to make this more of a novel and less of a game. This will
- surely endear me to some and alienate me from others; in any case, please
- approach the work with an open mind. Few works are as good as they are
- long, and this one is no exception. If you stick with it, I think your
- patience will pay off --- the second half of the work is considerably more
- innovative than the first.
-
- This is no accident. The work is transitional, both for me, and, I hope,
- for you. The earlier parts of the game are straight-ahead text adventure
- fare --- with the style and structure I assume you are most comfortable
- with. Later on, when the real point of the work becomes clear, you may
- notice that it deviates from the norm a bit.
-
- Finally, including a hint system is controversial but, I think, essential.
- Get a hint at any time by typing "hint" at the prompt. There is no penalty
- for getting hints; you are encouraged to do so. If you do not want to be
- tempted, type "encrypt" at the prompt to permanently encrypt the hints.
- The encryption is a letter substitution cipher, which you can decode with
- pencil, paper, and a little bit of effort.

- - anyone with a minimum of programming experience can pick up TADS quickly
- and easily. TADS is available as shareware, so you may be able to obtain
- TADS from the same place you found this package.
