-
- REQUIRED
- 386SX with 4 MB RAM
- 16 MB hard drive space (compressed 32 MB)
- MS-DOS 5.0 or higher
- VGA (256 colors)
- Mouse
-
- RECOMMENDED FOR BEST PERFORMANCE:
- 486DX with 8 MB RAM
- Sound card with DAC
-
- SECTION 2 - INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
-
- DOS:
- Insert Disk #1 and switch to the floppy disk prompt by typing A: or B:.
- Then type INSTALL to begin the installation program. Follow the on-
- screen prompts to complete the installation.
-
- WINDOWS:
- Insert Disk #1 into the appropriate drive. From Program Manager, click
- on File, then Run. In the Command Line field, type the letter of the
- drive followed by \SETUP. Ex: B:\SETUP. Follow the on-screen
- prompts to complete the installation.
-
-
- SECTION 3 - COMMON INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
-
- DOS AND WINDOWS:
- Problem: During installation you receive the error "DISK ERROR /
- READ ERROR" or "NOT READY READING DRIVE X" (Where X is
- the drive you are installing from).
- Solution: This usually indicates a bad disk. If you have had the product
- less than 90 days, Sierra will replace your game disks for free. Send
- Disk #1 with a copy of a dated receipt and a letter requesting disk
- replacement. Be sure to include your full name, mailing address and a
- phone number. If you have had the product over 90 days you will need
- to include a check or money order for $10.00. The address is: Sierra
- On-Line Fulfillment, PO Box 485, Coarsegold, CA 93614-0485.
-
- DOS ONLY:
- PROBLEM: After typing INSTALL, a row of dots goes across the screen
- and stops. The computer is locked up with this row of dots appearing on
- the screen.
- SOLUTION: The dots indicate the hardware detection portion of the
- installation program. You can bypass the hardware detection (and
- therefore the lockup) by typing INSTALL /M. If this entry doesn't
- work, try INSTALL /F. One of these entries should get you past the
- lockup.
-
- WINDOWS ONLY:
- PROBLEM: You receive an error message stating, "Your current display
- driver is not supported by this game."
- SOLUTION: Sierra's Windows games require that Windows is running in
- 256 color mode. Running Windows in less or more colors will cause
- this error message. Even though your monitor and video card may be
- capable of displaying 256 colors, Windows may not be set up to use this
- resolution. To check, double-click on Windows Setup in the Main
- program group. If the Display line reads "VGA" or "16 color", you will
- need to change to a driver that supports 256 colors. ("VGA" is a default
- Windows video driver that only supports 16 colors and will not work
- with Sierra's Windows games.) To change video drivers, select Options,
- then Change System Settings. Open the Display box to see the list of
- video drivers that are currently available. You should check your video
- card documentation for information on what 256 color driver to select.
-
- Be careful when changing video drivers! If you choose one that is not
- designed for your particular video card, Windows will not display
- properly. If this occurs, change to your Windows directory, type:
- SETUP, and choose the "VGA" driver again. You should contact your
- video card manufacturer for the correct driver.
-
-
- SECTION 4 - COMMON PROBLEMS
-
- PLEASE NOTE: Unless otherwise stated, the following issues occur in
- both the DOS and Windows versions of Shadows of Darkness.
-
- PROBLEM: "Fatal" or "Not an Object" errors occur when the game is
- started, or randomly during play.
- SOLUTION: You need the QG4PAT patch. Please see Section 7 for
- information on obtaining the patch.
-
- PROBLEM: The game locks up or crashes with the message "Unexpected
- Interrupt". This may happen when the game is started, or may occur
- randomly during play.
- SOLUTION: There are several factors which can cause this problem.
- 1. Run the game under a boot disk environment. To create a boot disk,
- you can use the boot disk instructions attached to this document or
- rerun the INSTALL program and choose "Make Bootable Floppy"
- from the Installation Options menu.
- 2. There could be a sound card conflict. Rerun the INSTALL program
- and choose PC speaker for Music and No Audio/Voice Card for
- Audio. If the game starts fine without the sound card activated,
- check the sound card settings. See the "Sound Card Settings"
- section of this document.
- 3. You may need the QG4PAT patch. Please see Section 7 - Obtaining
- a Sierra Patch Disk.
-
- PROBLEM: You get an "insufficient memory" message when attempting
- to run the game - even though you have lots of conventional memory
- available. This usually happens on 4 MB systems, but can occasionally
- occur on computers with more RAM. (DOS version only.)
- SOLUTION: Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness uses a "DOS
- extender" which allows the game to use very little conventional memory
- (less than 400k) and access your computer's upper memory directly. If
- this upper memory is being used by TSR's loaded high - your mouse or
- CD ROM drivers, for example - you can get this error message. To
- correct this, run the game with a boot disk. To create a boot disk, you
- can use the boot disk instructions in Section 8, rerun the INSTALL
- program and choose "Make Bootable Floppy" from the Installation
- Options menu.
-
- PROBLEM: You get a "DOS 4GW Professional Error" when starting the
- game. (DOS version only.)
- SOLUTION: This error message indicates that memory is low or
- inaccessible. If you have less than 4 MB (the minimum memory
- requirement), you will get this error message. Quest for Glory 4 will not
- run on computers with less than 4 MB. If you have 4 MB of RAM, run
- the game with a boot disk. To create a boot disk, you can use the boot
- disk instructions attached to this document or run the INSTALL
- program in the game directory and choose "Make Bootable Floppy"
- from the Installation Options menu.
-
- PROBLEM: When starting the game, you get an error message "Memory
- Allocation Error, cannot load command. System halted." (DOS version
- only.)
- SOLUTION: Locate and run the VESA driver for your video card. This
- will change the computer's memory allocation and prevent this error.
- Contact your video card manufacturer or consult your video card
- documentation for information on obtaining and installing the VESA
- driver for your video card.
-
- PROBLEM: When starting the game, an error message is displayed, "Error
- 6: Unable to find mouse driver." (DOS version only.)
- SOLUTION: Quest for Glory 4 requires a mouse. If a mouse driver is not
- installed, the above error message will occur when the program is
- started. Make sure a Microsoft compatible mouse driver is loaded
- before starting the game.
-
-
- PROBLEM: When you double-click on the game icon, you get an error
- message "Watcom Win386 - Not running on a 386 DPMI
- implementation" (Windows version only.)
- SOLUTION: Windows is probably in Standard mode. Exit to DOS and
- restart Windows by typing WIN /3. When you are back in Windows,
- check your swap file settings under Virtual Memory in the 386Enhanced
- section of Control Panel. You should have a permanent swap file of 5-
- 10 MB set up. This error will also occur if you have less than 4 MB of
- RAM on your computer. Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness
- requires 4 MB.
-
- PROBLEM: When starting the game, you receive an error message
- stating, "Your current display driver is not supported by this game."
- (Windows version only.)
-
- PROBLEM: When starting the game, Windows displays "Insufficient
- memory. Close one or more applications and try again." (Windows
- version only.)
- SOLUTION: First, make sure you are not running any other programs in
- Windows. Disable all screen savers, virus scans, IconHearIt, etc. Then,
- make sure your swap file is at 5-10 MB permanent. You can change the
- swap file through the Virtual Memory Setting in the 386 Enhanced
- section of Control Panel. In addition, if you're using an alternate
- Windows desktop like Norton or PCTools, use plain Program Manager
- instead. You can also make a Windows boot disk to free up memory.
- Windows boot disk instructions are included with this document.
-
- PROBLEM: The game window does not fill the whole screen. (Windows
- version only.)
- SOLUTION: You are running Windows in a resolution higher than
- 640x480. In 800x600 and 1024x768, the game window will be smaller
- than the screen. Switching to 640x480 will cause the window to fill the
- whole screen.
-
- PROBLEM: You receive an "Error 121" when a sound effect (like a door
- opening and closing) is played.
- SOLUTION: You need the QG4PAT patch. Please see Section 7 -
- Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk.
-
- PROBLEM: It takes a long time to save or restore a game.
- SOLUTION: You need the QG4PAT patch. Please see Section 7 -
- Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk.
-
- PROBLEM: You can't import your character from Quest for Glory 3.
- SOLUTION: You need the QG4IMP patch. Please see Section 7 -
- Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk.
-
-
- PROBLEM: You receive a <Messager> error, then the game goes to DOS
- and displays an "Error Number: 126". This can happen in three places:
- 1. When clicking on the Leshy bush
- 2. When using the hand icon on any item in Tanya's room after she has
- been rescued.
- 3. When you throw daggers at the ghost in the castle.
- SOLUTION: This error occurs when you perform an action that was not
- anticipated by the game's programmers. Here's how to avoid the error:
- 1. Click on the bush that the Leshy is hiding behind, not on the actual
- Leshy bush.
- 2. Don't go back to Tanya's room after saving her. There's nothing
- you need there.
- 3. Don't throw daggers at the ghost in the castle. You don't need to do
- this to complete the game successfully.
-
- PROBLEM: When you restore a saved game, you receive a message
- stating, "This game was saved under a different interpreter".
- SOLUTION: You need the QG4PAT patch. Please see Section 7 -
- Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk.
-
- PROBLEM: You receive a message stating, "[SIERRAW.EXE] has caused
- a General Protection Fault in module [256_1024.DRV] at
- [00007:d3100.]" (The words in the [ ] might vary.) (Windows version
- only.)
- SOLUTION: A General Protection Fault in Windows is usually a conflict
- between two programs. The most common causes of GPFs are other
- programs running in Windows and Windows video and sound drivers.
- You should make sure that all screen savers, virus scans, and sound-
- related Windows programs (IconHear It, Wired for Sound, etc.) are
- disabled before starting the game. In addition, if you are using an
- alternate Windows desktop like Norton Desktop or PCTools, try using
- just plain Program Manager.
-
- Outdated or incompatible video or sound drivers can also cause General
- Protection Faults. Sierra recommends you check with your sound and
- video card manufacturers to make sure you have the latest versions of
- these drivers. Some manufacturers update their drivers several times a
- year, so it's easy to get behind.
-
- You should also, make sure you have a swap file set up that is at least 6-
- 10 MB permanent. You can check your swap file settings in the
- 386Enhanced icon in the Control Panel.
-
- In addition to the above steps, create a boot disk using the instructions in
- Section 9 and run the game under a boot disk environment.
-
- PROBLEM: Random lockups during the game using the Gravis
- Ultrasound card. (DOS version only.)
- SOLUTION: Sierra and Gravis have developed new drivers for use with
- the GUS card and our 32-bit programs. The driver is named GUS32.
- See the section "Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk" later in this document
- for information on getting this driver.
-
- PROBLEM: Game displays an "out of low memory" message during the
- game. (DOS version only.)
- SOLUTION: Running the game with a boot disk should correct this
- problems. You can use the boot disk instructions attached to this
- document or rerun the INSTALL program and choose "Make Bootable
- Floppy" from the Installation Options menu. If you make the boot disk
- through the INSTALL program, add the following lines to the
- CONFIG.SYS:
-
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
- DOS=HIGH
-
- If this does not help, you should install the QG4PAT patch. Please see
- Section 7 - Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk.
-
-
- PROBLEM: You cannot exit the screen to the south. This may occur in
- the "Heart Room" in the cave or in the Inn. (Windows version only.)
- SOLUTION: Edit the RESOURCE.WIN file in the game directory and
- make the following changes:
-
- Put a semicolon in front of the wWidth line:
- ;wWidth = 640
-
- Change the BORDERPIXELS value to 15:
- borderpixels = 15
-
- Save the changes and run the game. This will allow you to exit the
- rooms successfully.
-
- PROBLEM: You have been playing the game for a long time, but nothing
- happens to progress the story.
- SOLUTION: To finish Shadows of Darkness, it is necessary to rescue the
- little vampire girl Tanya from the castle. When he does this, the Hero
- gets the magical staff. Within 1-3 days after obtaining the staff, a note
- should appear on the floor of the Hero's room at the Inn. It is signed by
- Katrina and asks the Hero to meet her at the castle gate that night. If this
- note never shows up, then the game will continue forever, but nothing
- will happen. If you're having this problem, you need the QG4NOTE
- patch. Please see Section 7 for information on obtaining the patch.
- After you've installed this patch, you must restore to game previous to
- rescuing Tanya.
-
-
- SECTION 5 - TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
-
- If you do not see your specific problem listed above, these standard
- troubleshooting procedures correct most problems running Quest for
- Glory: Shadows of Darkness.
-
- Step 1 - Install the patches. (DOS and Windows versions)
- There are several patches (QG4PAT, QG4NOTE, QG4IMP) available
- for the floppy disk version of Shadows of Darkness. These patches
- correct problems with fatal errors, lockups and importing characters.
- Please see Section 7 for detailed information on the patches available for
- Shadows of Darkness.
-
- Step 2 - Run the program from a minimal boot disk. (DOS and
- Windows versions)
- A boot disk is a tool that can be used to resolve most conflicts. Boot
- disks will free up more system resources and memory for your games.
- The boot disk also creates an environment that is "cleaner" or free of
- extra TSR and utilities that can sometimes cause conflicts. Boot disk
- instructions are included in Section 8 of this document.
-
- Step 3 - Check for corrupted files. (DOS and Windows versions)
- Run CHKDSK /F or SCANDISK to detect and correct any hard drive
- errors and corrupted files. If you find any errors such as cross-linked or
- truncated files or lost allocation units, correct them, then delete and
- reinstall Shadows of Darkness.
-
- Step 4 - Check for sound card conflicts. (DOS version)
- Many lockups in games can be traced to sound card configuration. To
- determine if you have a sound card lockup, run the INSTALL program
- and check the current setting for "MUSIC". Make sure the selection is
- supported by the hardware in your computer. Test for conflicts by
- changing the "MUSIC" selection to "IBM PC or Compatible Speaker"
- and then playing the game. If the game works with the internal speaker
- and locks up with the sound card; you will know there is some sort of
- sound card conflict. See Section 6 - Sound Issues and Sound Card
- Settings and your sound card's documentation for help resolving sound
- card conflicts.
-
- Step 5 - Reinstall the game in a clean boot environment. (DOS and
- Windows versions)
- Lockups and other technical problems can be caused by corrupted game
- files. No program will run correctly if the data or executable files are
- corrupted. These corruptions will occur during the installation of the
- game and are usually due to conflicts with TSRs or other utilities
- running in DOS during the installation. Reinstalling the game in the
- same DOS environment will usually result in the same corrupted data.
- You should install the game in a "clean" boot environment.
-
- Step 6 - Create a clean Windows environment (Windows version)
- Make sure that all screen savers, virus scans, and sound-related
- Windows programs (IconHear It, Wired for Sound, etc.) are disabled
- before starting the game. In addition, if you are using an alternate
- Windows desktop like Norton Desktop or PCTools, try using just plain
- Program Manager. Check your swap file settings. Your Windows swap
- file should be between 6-10 MB. You can check your swap file settings
- in the 386Enhanced icon in the Control Panel.
-
- Outdated or incompatible video or sound drivers can also cause lockups
- and errors in Windows. Sierra recommends you check with your sound
- and video card manufacturers to make sure you have the latest versions
- of these drivers. Some manufacturers update their drivers several times
- a year, so it's easy to get behind.
-
-
- SECTION 6 - SOUND CARD SETTINGS AND SOUND ISSUES
-
- SOUND CARD SETTINGS
- In DOS, the best sound card settings for a SoundBlaster compatible card
- are I/O 220, DMA 1 and IRQ 5 or 7. If you're using a Pro Audio card,
- the best settings are I/O 220, DMA 3 and IRQ 5 for the Pro Audio
- portion of the card, set the SoundBlaster portion of the card to DMA 1
- and IRQ 7. Make sure that the Soundblaster and ProAudio portions do
- not share the same DMA! Settings outside these parameters can cause
- lockups and/or choppy, repeating or garbled speech. Most sound cards
- have test utilities that will tell you what settings you are using. Check
- your sound card documentation for more information.
-
- In Windows, you can use almost any sound card settings. Settings like
- IRQ 2 or 10 that will not work in DOS will work in Windows. You
- should check your sound card documentation for information on setting
- up your Windows sound card drivers.
-
- DOS SOUND ISSUES
- PROBLEM: The game locks up when a character speaks or a sound effect
- is played.
- SOLUTION: This usually happens with SoundBlaster 16 and compatible
- cards. To fix it, rerun the INSTALL program, change Music to
- SoundBlaster/Adlib and Audio to Thunderboard. If this does not correct
- the problem, you may be using non-standard sound card settings, or have
- a hard ware conflict; see the Sound Card Settings section of this
- document.
-
- PROBLEM: Choppy, repeating or garbled speech.
- SOLUTION: This is caused by non-standard sound card settings or a
- conflict between the sound card and another piece of hardware on your
- computer. See "Sound Card Settings" above for supported settings and
- refer to your sound card documentation for information on resolving
- hardware conflicts.
-
- PROBLEM: Speech or music cuts out occasionally.
- SOLUTION: This usually happens with SoundBlaster 16 and compatible
- cards. To fix it, rerun the INSTALL program, change Music to
- SoundBlaster/Adlib and Audio to Thunderboard. If this does not help,
- edit the RESOURCE.CFG file in the game directory and change the
- "audiosize=xx" line to "audiosize=64". You may have to experiment
- with the audiosize value; you can set it as high as 127. You should also
- check your sound card settings. See the above section "Sound Card
- Settings".
-
-
- PROBLEM: No sound in the game after booting up with a boot disk.
- This often occurs with the SoundBlaster 16, but occasionally happens
- with other sound cards.
- SOLUTION: This happens when sound drivers or configuration lines get
- left off the boot disk. The following example lines are for the
- SoundBlaster 16 and should be in your AUTOEXEC.BAT in this order:
-
- SET SOUND=C:\SB16
- SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H1 P300 T6
- C:\SB16\SB16SET (followed by your mixer settings--copy them from
- your hard drive AUTOEXEC)
- C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S
- SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E
-
- Adding these lines to the AUTOEXEC on the boot disk should give you
- sound. If you have a sound card other than the SoundBlaster 16, check
- the sound card tables at the end of this document for a list of sound cards
- and the drivers that should be in the CONFIG.SYS and
- AUTOEXEC.BAT. If your sound card is not on the list, check your
- sound card documentation for the correct drivers.
-
-
- WINDOWS SOUND ISSUES
- PROBLEM: When starting the game, you get a "Wave Out Open" error
- message.
- SOLUTION: This error is caused by two programs trying to use the sound
- card at the same time. If you are using any sound-related Windows
- programs like screen savers, IconHearIt, Wired for Sound, etc., you
- should disable them before you start the game. Packard Bell's
- Navigator will also cause this problem; you should turn Navigator off
- before you start the game. (You can prevent Navigator from loading
- automatically by dragging its icon from the Startup group to the
- Accessories group and restarting Windows.)
-
- PROBLEM: Music and voices cut out.
- SOLUTION: Edit the RESOURCE.WIN file in the game directory and
- change the "winAudioSize=20" to "winAudioSize=40". If this doesn't
- help, try increasing it, but don't set it higher than 127.
-
- PROBLEM: Using a Pro Audio Spectrum 16, you get static during
- opening music and when characters are speaking.
- SOLUTION: This happens when the Pro Audio portion of the sound card is
- set to DMA 3. DMA 3 is the Pro Audio's 8-bit DMA. Changing the
- DMA setting to DMA 5 (the 16-bit DMA) will correct this problem. For
- information on changing the DMA setting, please consult your sound
- card documentation.
-
-
- SECTION 7 - OBTAINING A SIERRA PATCH DISK
-
- There are several patches available for the floppy disk version of Quest
- for Glory: Shadows of Darkness. NOTE: The first three patches listed
- here are for the floppy version of Shadows of Darkness ONLY and will
- not work with the CD version.
-
- QG4PAT - This patch corrects some fatal errors, long save and restore
- times, and some crashing problems. When you install this patch, it will
- make your saved games invalid and you must start the game over.
-
- QG4IMP - This patch corrects problems importing characters from
- Quest for Glory 3.
-
- QG4NOTE - This patch causes the note from Katrina to appear after you
- have rescued Tanya.
-
- GUS32 - This patch contains contains new Gravis drivers for Sierra's
- 32-bit DOS games.
-
- The fastest way to obtain a Sierra patch disk is to download it from one
- of the following on-line services: the Sierra BBS (206-644-0112), FTP
- to the Sierra BBS (bbs.sierra.com), CompuServe (GO SIERRA) or
- America OnLine (KEYWORD SIERRA). You can also request a patch
- disk be mailed to you by calling Sierra Technical Support at 206-644-
- 7697, faxing to 206-644-7697 or writing to Sierra On-Line Patch Disks,
- Dept. 10, PO Box 485, Coarsegold, CA 93614-0485.
-
-
- SECTION 8 - BOOT DISK INSTRUCTIONS
-
- PLEASE NOTE: Please read the boot disk instructions completely
- before beginning the boot disk procedure. These boot disk instructions
- will work for both the DOS and Windows version of Shadows of
- Darkness. If you are playing the Windows version of the game, you can
- skip Step 2.
-
- STEP 1
- FORMATTING THE DISK
- To make a boot disk, format a high density diskette in the A: drive. (It is
- necessary to reformat the disk if it is already formatted.) Formatting the
- disk with the /S switch will transfer the "system files" to the disk and
- allow the computer to boot up correctly. The disk must be in the A:
- drive; the computer will not boot from the B: drive. Type the FORMAT
- command as follows:
-
- FORMAT A: /S <ENTER>
-
- If you get a "Bad command or file name" error message, type:
-
- PATH=C:\DOS <ENTER>
-
- Then retype the FORMAT command above. If you receive the error
- again, the MS-DOS FORMAT command may not be on your system, or
- it may have been renamed. Programs such as PC Tools and Norton Disk
- Utilities sometimes rename the FORMAT command to prevent
- accidental loss of data. If you are using a program of this type, check
- your documentation to find out how to format a SYSTEM DISK, then
- proceed to Step 2.
-
- STEP 2
- LOCATING THE MOUSE DRIVER (skip if playing the Windows
- version of Shadows of Darkness)
- The DOS version of Shadows of Darkness requires that a Microsoft
- compatible mouse driver be loaded into memory before playing the
- game. There are two kinds of mouse drivers available: those that load in
- the CONFIG.SYS file and those that load in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
- CONFIG.SYS mouse drivers have an extension of .SYS (MOUSE.SYS)
- and AUTOEXEC.BAT drivers have either a .COM or .EXE extension
- (MOUSE.COM, MOUSE.EXE). You must load at least one of these
- drivers, but it is not necessary to load them all.
-
- If you do not know where the mouse drivers are located on your system,
- the command below should help you locate them. Type the following at
- the C:\ prompt:
-
- DIR MOUSE* /S <ENTER>
-
- This command will cause the system to search all subdirectories for a
- file called MOUSE. If the system locates a MOUSE file, it will display
- the path where the file is located. For example, if the MOUSE.COM file
- is located in a C:\MOUSE directory, the system will display:
-
- Directory of C:\MOUSE
- MOUSE.SYS 55160 03-10-92 3:10a
- MOUSE.COM 56408 03-10-03 6:00a
-
- If this procedure does not locate a MOUSE file, your mouse driver may
- have a different name; some common names for mouse drivers are
- IMOUSE, GMOUSE and HPMOUSE. Your should check your mouse
- documentation for the exact file names and how to install them.
-
- Once you have located the mouse driver, you must copy it to the boot
- disk. The following example assumes that the mouse drivers are located
- in the C:\MOUSE directory as shown above. To copy the MOUSE files
- to the boot disk, type:
-
- COPY C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.* A: <ENTER>
-
- Substitute the appropriate path and file names for your mouse drivers in
- the command above. After you press ENTER, you should see a message
- indicating that some files were copied.
-
- STEP 3
- LOCATING THE SOUND CARD DRIVERS
- Many sound cards have drivers or initialization lines that must be loaded
- in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. Some sound cards that
- require these drivers or initialization routines are: SoundBlaster 16,
- MAD16 and the Aria 16.
-
- At the end of this document, you will find a section labeled "Sound
- Cards". These tables contain the sound card lines for many common
- sound cards. Check to see if your sound card is on the list. If it is, then
- you will need to add the appropriate lines to the AUTOEXEC.BAT
- and/or CONFIG.SYS on your boot disk. If your sound card is not on the
- list, you should check your documentation for information on what
- needs to load in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.
-
- STEP 4
- CREATING THE CONFIG.SYS FILE
- To create the CONFIG.SYS file on the boot disk, switch to the A: drive
- and type the following:
-
- COPY CON CONFIG.SYS <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down one line and blink)
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS <ENTER>
- DOS=HIGH,UMB <ENTER>
- FILES=30 <ENTER>
- BUFFERS=20 <ENTER>
-
- If you are playing the DOS version of the game and are using the
- MOUSE.SYS file to load your mouse, add the following line to the
- CONFIG.SYS:
-
- DEVICE=A:\MOUSE.SYS <ENTER>
-
- If you need to load any sound card drivers, copy them from the "Sound
- Cards" section now. The following example lines are for the
- SoundBlaster 16:
-
- DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5 <ENTER>
- DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTMM.SYS <ENTER>
-
- Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.
-
- STEP 5
- CREATING THE AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
- To create the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the boot disk, switch to the A:
- drive and type the following:
-
- COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down one line and blink)
- @ECHO OFF <ENTER>
- C:\ <ENTER>
- SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM <ENTER>
- PROMPT SIERRA BOOT DISK $_$P$G <ENTER>
- PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\SIERRA <ENTER>
-
- If you are playing the DOS version of the game and are using the
- MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.EXE file to load your mouse driver, add the
- appropriate line:
-
- A:\MOUSE.EXE <ENTER>
-
- If you need to run any sound card initialization programs or load any
- drivers, copy them from the "Sound Cards" section now. The following
- example lines are for the SoundBlaster 16:
-
- SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T6 <ENTER>
- SET SOUND=C:\SB16 <ENTER>
- SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E <ENTER>
- C:\SB16\SB16SET /M:220 /VOC:220 /CD:220 /MIDI:220 /LINE:220 <ENTER>
- C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S <ENTER>
-
- Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.
-
- STEP 6
- REBOOT THE SYSTEM AND START THE GAME
- Reboot your system by pressing the <RESET> button on your computer
- or by using the <CTRL> <ALT> <DELETE> key sequence on your
- keyboard. Follow the instructions in the game manual to start the game.
-
-
- SOUND CARD DRIVER INFORMATION
-
- NOTE: The sound card drivers and initialization lines in this
- section are the default settings for these devices. You should
- check your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS on your hard
- drive to see if you are using any non-default settings.
