- echo NOTES ON TONY LA RUSSA BASEBALL II FANTASY DRAFT
- echo
- echo USING THE FANTASY DRAFT
- echo The Fantasy Draft Expansion Disk alters options under the Baseball
- echo icon Menu and the Utilities Menu of TLB 2. To enter the Fantasy Draft
- echo Menu, select FANTASY DRAFT from the options under the Baseball Icon
- echo Menu.
- echo
- echo THE BASEBALL ICON MENU
- echo Once in the draft menus, you can load a previously saved draft by
- echo selecting LOAD DRAFT IN PROGRESS, from under the Baseball Icon menu.
- echo You can also save a draft by selecting SAVE DRAFT IN PROGRESS.
- echo Selecting EXIT DRAFT returns you to TLB 2's regular game menus and
- echo QUIT exits the draft and returns you to DOS. NOTE: Only one draft can
- echo be saved at a time per league.
- echo
- echo THE DRAFT SETUP MENU
- echo Choosing Draft Rules from this menu allows you to set the ground rules
- echo for the fantasy draft.
- echo
- echo Draft Order: You may choose whether the draft will CYCLE from first
- echo team to last team and then repeat the same sequence of teams from
- echo round to round; SNAKE from first team to last team, then last team to
- pause
- echo first team, and so on; or be in RANDOM order every round.
- echo
- echo Speed of Display: You may control whether or not an Enter prompt
- echo follows every computer draft pick. Human draft picks always have a
- echo prompt.
- echo
- echo Salary Cap: You may draft with or without a salary cap, which is
- echo simply a limit on the total amount any team can spend on its players.
- echo Your salary cap will vary to reflect whether your SALARY SCALE has
- echo been set to REAL WORLD or ROTISSERIE.
- echo
- echo Salary Scale: You may draft with a salary cap using real world dollar
- echo values or TLB 2 rotisserie salary values.
- echo
- echo Draft Rights: This allows you to draft in two very different ways.
- echo With STANDARD draft rights, the drafting team, human or computer
- echo controlled, simply adds the selected player to the team roster at the
- echo preset salary value. With AUCTION draft rights, a team selects a
- echo player on its turn, but all other drafting teams can bid on that
- echo player. Teams may bid any amount for a player, without any regard to
- echo preset salaries, subject to the amount of money your team has left.
- echo
- echo Edit Salary Cap: This option allows you to edit the salary cap,
- pause
- echo whether it be on the real word or rotisserie salary scale.
- echo
- echo TEAM POOL allows you to edit which teams will be pooling players to be
- echo drafted, and which teams will be participating in the draft. Check
- echo marks next to the team names will determine those teams involved in
- echo the draft.RESTART DRAFT will return all drafted players to the draft
- echo pool and the draft will restart at the first team's pick in round 1.
- echo CALCULATE PLAYER SALARIES will let TLB 2 assign salary values to all
- echo players based on the player's performance. WARNING: Once this option
- echo is selected the historical values will be changed permanently.
- echo EDIT PLAYER SALARIES allows you to set individual player salaries. You
- echo must first select the team the player or players are on, and then
- echo highlight the player whose salary you wish to edit.
- echo The RESET GENERAL MANAGERS option resets Manager Profiles for all
- echo teams participating in the draft to the default Tony La Russa
- echo management profile.
- echo
- echo THE DRAFT MENU
- echo Selecting DRAFT DAY from the DRAFT menu starts the draft. Select this
- echo option only after you are satisfied with the draft rules, manager
- echo profiles, and player salaries. From Draft Day, pressing any letter
- echo shows an alphabetical list of players, beginning with the letter
- echo pressed. For example, if you type a "G", you will see a list of
- pause
- echo players beginning with last names that start with "G".
- echo The Draft Meter shows how many players have been drafted per position.
- echo A black value indicates the position is not sufficiently filled due to
- echo a lack of healthy players. A blue value indicates the position is
- echo close to being filled; a green value indicates the position will be
- echo filled with an appropriate player throughout the season.
- echo The TRADES option in the draft works like that in the TLB 2 basic
- echo game, with a few exceptions. Not only can you trade pitchers and
- echo players, but draft slots as well. For example, in the third round of
- echo the draft, you may want to trade the pitcher you got in the second
- echo round for another player's fourth and sixth round draft picks.
- echo
- echo TEAM GENERAL MANAGER allows you to select which teams in the draft
- echo will be under computer control, and which teams will be under human
- echo control.
- echo
- echo The GENERAL MANAGER PROFILE option allows you to edit a computer-
- echo controlled team's drafting strategy. There are six different settings
- echo available:
- echo Tony La Russa: The computer drafts using Tony La Russa's personal
- echo drafting strategies.
- echo Power Hungry: The computer drafts looking for power first at all
- echo positions.
- pause
- echo Steal Bases, Steal hits: The computer drafts looking for blinding
- echo speed at all positions.
- echo Pitching Pitching Pitching: The computer drafts looking for
- echo overpowering starters, middle relievers, and closers first.
- echo Tough in the Field: The computer drafts with tough defense in mind.
- echo Custom: The computer drafts based upon custom settings which you
- echo create by editing seven basic characteristics: STARTERS, CLOSERS,
- echo MIDDLE RELIEVERS, SPEED, POWER, BATTING AVERAGE, and DEFENSE. You may
- echo distribute 100 points between the seven characteristics. You may
- echo assign 0 to 100 points for each characteristic.
- echo
- echo THE MANAGER MENU
- echo This menu works much like the Manager Menu of the TLB 2 basic game.
- echo From here you can view and edit the PLAYER ROSTER, PITCHING STAFF,
- echo PITCHING ROTATION, DEFENSIVE ASSIGNMENTS, and BATTING ORDER of the
- echo team thatÆs currently got the next pick in the draft. Selecting NEW
- echo TEAM from this menu will allow you to view the various management
- echo screens of the other teams participating in the draft.
- echo
- echo THE HOMEPLATE ICON MENU
- echo From this menu you can access the features assigned to the function
- echo keys.
- echo F1 Displays the highlighted player's batting statistics on
- pause
- echo screen.
- echo F2 Displays the highlighted player's pitching statistics on
- echo screen. NOTE: The draft introduces a new pitching stat, ratio.
- echo Ratio is hits plus walks divided by innings pitched. The lower
- echo the ratio the better.
- echo F3 Displays the highlighted player's fielding statistics on
- echo screen.
- echo F4 In Fantasy Manager this option is disconnected.
- echo F5 This key dumps all information on screen to the printer.
- echo F6 Performs a "print to file" command. This does essentially the
- echo same thing as [F5], except the screen data is compiled into a
- echo file that appears in your TLB 2 root directory as "PRINT.TXT".
- echo You can collect as many stat screens as you choose, and each
- echo is "appended" into this special file that you can edit or
- echo print in the usual ways.
- echo F7 Operates as a HELP key to get you through the more complicated
- echo parts of the draft should you require assistance.
- echo F8 This option displays the draft order for all teams acting in
- echo the current round of the draft. The team that is currently
- echo drafting is marked with a check next to its name.
- echo
- echo IMPORTING STATISTICS FROM ON-LINE SERVICES
- echo Your UTILITIES MENU in TLB 2 has been edited to give you the new
- pause
- echo option of importing stats from on-line services such as STATS Inc.
- echo These services provide up-to-date statistics for all professional
- echo baseball teams that can be translated into use by TLB 2.
- echo NOTE: You must already be a subscriber to the on-line services to make
- echo use of this feature.
- echo Use the F7 key if you need help.
- echo
- echo ABOUT STATS, INC.
- echo
- echo It all starts with the system. The STATS scoring method, which
- echo includes pitch-by-pitch information and the direction, distance, and
- echo velocity of each ball hit into play, yields an immense amount of
- echo information. Sure, we have all the statistics you're used to seeing,
- echo but where other statistical sources stop, STATS is just getting
- echo started.
- echo
- pause
- echo Then, there's the network. Out information is timely because our game
- echo reporters send their information by computer as soon as the game is
- echo over. Statistics are checked, rechecked, updated, and are available
- echo daily.
- echo
- echo Analysis comes next. STATS constantly searches for new ways to use
- echo this wealth of information to open windows into the working of
- echo baseball. Accurate numbers, intelligent computer programming, and a
- echo large dose of imagination all help coax the most valuable information
- echo from its elusive cover.
- echo
- echo Finally, distribution!
- echo
- echo For 13 years now, STATS has served over a dozen Major League teams.
- echo The box scores that STATS provides to THE ASSOCIATED PRESS and USA

- echo each Major League team. We offer a host of year-end statistical
- pause
- echo breakdowns on paper or disk that cover hitting, pitching, catching,
- echo baserunning, fielding, and more. STATS even produces custom reports
- echo on request.
- echo
- echo Computer users with modems can access the STATS computer for
- echo information with STATS On-Line. If you own a computer with a modem,
- echo there is no other source with the scope of baseball information that
- echo STATS can offer.
- echo
- echo STATS and Bill James enjoy an on-going affiliation that has produced
- echo the book you are now holding. We also administer Bill James Fantasy
- echo Baseball (BJFB), the ultimate baseball game, designed by Bill James
- echo himself, which allows you to manage your own team and compete with
- echo other team owners around the country. Whether you play BJFB or
- echo another fantasy game, our new STATS fax report can show you what your
- echo players did the previous night as soon as you can get to the fax
- echo machine in the morning. STATS also offers a head-to-head fantasy
- echo football game STATS Fantasy Football. BJFB The Winter Game is a brand
- echo new, totally unique, historically based fantasy baseball game for
- echo those who can't wait for spring.
- echo
- echo Always innovative, STATS has other exciting future projects underway
- echo for sports fans nationwide. It is the purpose of STATS to make the
- pause
- echo best possible sports information available to all interests: fans,
- echo play, teams, and media.

- echo For the story behind the numbers, check out STATS' other publications:
- echo The STATS 1993 Baseball Scoreboard: The first edition of this book in
- echo 1990 took the nation's baseball fans by storm. This all new 1993
- echo edition, available in book stores or directly from STATS, is back with
- pause
- echo the same great writing, great graphics and stats you won't find
- echo anywhere else. The Major League Handbook's brother, the STATS 1993
- echo Minor League Handbook, will add to your 1993 reference library,
- echo especially important for the coming expansion. STATS continues a
- echo tradition with The Scouting Report: 1993, available in book stores in
- echo the Spring of 1993. You'll find scouting reports on over 700 players,
- echo including team prospect reports, backed by statistical findings you
- echo can only get from STATS, Inc. Last, but certainly not least, the new
- echo addition to the STATS Publishing family, the STATS 1993 Player
- echo Profiles Book, is full of breakdowns and situational stats for every
- echo Major League player, identical to the few we offer in this book.

- echo NOTES AND ERRATA ON TONY 2
- echo
- echo The following is a list of rules errata and clarifications based on
- echo what SSI has heard from its customers since the release of Tony 2.
- echo
- echo Instant Replay:
- echo
- echo The close-up replay animation sequences do not necessarily show the
- echo actualplay as it occurred on the field. Instead, it shows a simulated
- echo replay based on the type of play that occurred.
- echo
- echo Standardized Stats:
- echo
- echo Due to the limited amount of material and the lack of credible
- echo sources, many of the players' ratings have been standardized. The
- echo editing of thesestats has been left up to you, so feel free to make
- pause
- echo any adjustments that youwish. Standardizing stats keeps the the stats
- echo from affecting the game. The1992 teams' disk will have a broad range
- echo of numbers for these stats.
- echo
- echo The stats that have been standardized are: Balks, wild pitches,
- echo passed balls, day/night, streaks, morale, and leadership.
- echo
- echo Play-by-Play:
- echo
- echo Some sound boards have Ron Barr announcing the play-by-play.
- echo Occasionally, the accuracy of the announcer can be affected by an
- echo extraordinary play in the field. For example, Barr may call a "line
- echo drive to centerfield," yet an alert and capable infielder can rob the
- echo ball before it leaves the infield. Remember, Ron Barr is calling
- echo approximately where the ball will go if unobstructed from its flight
- echo path, and not necessarily calling the player the ball is hit toward.
- echo
- echo Hard Drive Compressors:
- echo
- echo THe data files for Tony 2 are kept in compressed format to take up
- echo less space on your hard drive. Because of this, we do not recommend
- echo that you use this program with Stacker or SuperStor. Similar problems
- echo may occur with DOS 6's DoubleSpace(although none have been found so
- pause
- echo far). The game can probably be installed to a machine utilizing a
- echo compressor, but the game may run slowly and crash periodically.
- echo
- echo The Boot Disk
- echo
- echo To limit compatibility and memory problems, it is highly recommended
- echo that the following boot disk be used. These instructions are based on
- echo DOS 5. Use of any other DOS, including DOS 6 should consult their DOS
- echo manuals to make a boot disk. Be aware that Tony 2 came out before the
- echo release of DOS 6 and was not tested on it.
- echo
- echo 1. From the c: prompt, type, "format A:/s" [enter]
- echo 1a. Follow the on screen prompts.
- echo 2. Place a blank disk in your "a" drive (it MUST be your a drive) and
- echo label it, "Tony 2 Boot Disk."
- echo 3. Go to the A: prompt by typing,"A:" [enter]
- echo 4. Type, "edit" [enter]
- echo 5. This brings up a blue screen where you can type. Type in the
- echo following text just as it appears below:
- echo
- echo Files=30
- echo Buffers25
- echo Device=c:\DOS\himem.sys
- pause
- echo Device=c:\DOS\emm386.exe noems
- echo DOS=high,umb
- echo
- echo
- echo 5a. Now go up to File and Save this document as,"CONFIG.SYS"
- echo 6. Go into File again and Open a New document. Type in the following
- echo text exactly as it apears below:
- echo
- echo Path=c:\;c:\DOS;c:mouse
- echo prompt $p$g
- echo loadhigh mouse
- echo c:
- echo cd\tony2
- echo tony2
- echo
- echo 6a. The "cd\tony2" assumes that Tony 2 is installed to its default
- echo directory which is tony2. If you install Tony 2 to another name,
- echo use the new name instead. For example, if you install Tony 2 into
- echo a directory called T2, the line would read, "cd\t2"
- echo
- echo 6b. Now go up to File and Save this document as, "autoexec.bat"
- echo To use your Tony 2 Boot Disk, place the disk in your A: drive (It
- echo MUST be your A drive) and reboot your machine. Tony 2 will
- pause
- echo automatically come up and you'll be ready to play.
- echo
- echo ERRATA:
- echo
- echo Tony 2 has a huge database which is referenced with every pitch. Given
- echo this, Tony 2 still completes the season with a historical accuracy of
- echo about 90%.Starting a second season using simulated stats compiled from
- echo the first season will result in only an 81% accuracy (90% of 90). A
- echo third season would have a 72% (90% of 81) accuracy and so on. The
- echo tendency is for players to hit like their simulated stats so there is
- echo a build up of doubles, triples, homers, etc..., for hitters, and
- echo strikeouts and walks for pitchers.
- echo
- echo Importing Teams:
- echo
- echo A common problem when importing teams from Tony 1 is caused by not
- echo selecting a league from Tony 1. Tony 1 only allowed one league to be
- echo used at a time. When importing a league from Tony 1 only one league
- pause
- echo will be present to choose from. You must left click with the mouse on
- echo this league for it to be imported.
- echo
- echo Tony La Russa's name and likeness are used under license from Sports
- echo Advisors Group.

- echo
- echo
- echo
- echo
- echo WARNING (to customers with high scoring games)
- echo
- echo Due to the data structure, whenever upgrades are made to
- echo Tony2, whether by patch, team disks, stats downloading,
- echo or expansions, high score games will occur when first
- echo playing exhibition games. To alleviate this, just select
- echo Start New Season under the Season menu, select a season,
- echo and follow the on-screen prompts. Once this is done,
- echo games will have normal scores both in exhibition and
- echo league play.
