5. TEXT AND COMPOSITION
==================================
5.1 KERNING
When you want to kern 1/100 of an em space (Ctrl + Shift and the plus or
minus key on the numeric keypad), make sure Num Lock is OFF. If it is on,
the Shift key is invalidated and the letters are kerned 1/25 of an em
instead. Also, you cannot kern to the left of the first character of a
line.
5.2 TRACK TABLES PROVIDED IN PAGEMAKER
PageMaker provides five tracks for the following PCL and Postscript
fonts. All fonts listed include tracks for the "Normal" type style; some
also have tracks for additional type styles, as listed.

5.3 DISPLAYING YOUR EXTENDED CHARACTER SET
Included in the Template directory is a template called CHARSET.PT4, which
is a single page listing the extended characters you can use in a
PageMaker publication. The template contains two stories: one listing the
extended characters and the other listing the numbers corresponding to
each extended character. This template helps you to determine precisely
which extended characters are available to you, given your target printer
and font set.
To use this template:
1. Open a copy of CHARSET.PT4.
2. Choose "Target printer..." from the File menu to select the printer
driver PageMaker will use for text composition.
3. Using the text tool, click an insertion point in the story containing
the extended characters, and press Ctrl + A ("Select all"). The entire
story is highlighted.
4. From the Type menu, choose the font in which you want to display or
print the available extended characters.
Remember that unless you have installed matching screen fonts for your
printer fonts, what your screen displays may not be what your printer
prints. You may, therefore, want to print this template for reference,
especially if you are using a decorative or symbol font.
5.4 A TIP FOR FORCE JUSTIFICATION
If you force-justify a headline that is considerably shorter than the
column width, and the headline contains more than one word, PageMaker may
add an excessive amount of word spacing to separate these words. For a
more pleasing effect, replace the spaces between words with nonbreaking
spaces (Ctrl + spacebar).
5.5 FONT LIST DISPLAY
Because Microsoft Windows does not permit the scrolling of menu items, a
maximum of 27 fonts can be displayed in the "Font" submenu in the Type
menu with a VGA screen. If you have more fonts than can be listed in the
submenu, use the "Type specifications" dialog box when choosing fonts.
5.5 USING ADOBE TYPE REUNION FONTS IN PUBLICATIONS CONVERTED FROM MACINTOSH PAGEMAKER
If you are working on a Macintosh PageMaker 4.0 (or 4.01) publication
that uses Adobe Type Reunion, and you plan to convert this publication to
PageMaker 4.0 for Windows, you can avoid font translation problems by
taking the following steps:
1. When applying type styles in the Macintosh publication, choose the
"Regular," or base font type style, for all text. For example, rather
than choosing "Times bold italic," you would simply choose Times "Regular."
2. When you open the publication in PageMaker 4.0 for Windows, you can
automatically apply the type styles you want using the "Change..." command.

6. EDITING ALDUS.INI'S DISPLAY SETTINGS
==================================
To alter any of PageMaker's default display settings, you can add the
appropriate command lines to the [PageMaker] section of ALDUS.INI,
changing the defaults as you wish.
The display setting entries listed below show the PageMaker default. Note
that the capitalization is only for the sake of readability, and that
except for the RGB values, there can be no spaces between characters.
ListVectors=0
Adds the Windows vector fonts Roman, Script, and Modern to the "Type
specifications" dialog box. Entering 0 removes them. Note that because
these are Windows screen fonts rather than printer fonts, PageMaker cannot
print them with the same quality as that of printer fonts.
ColorBitmaps=0
Entering 1 here leaves the graphic in color while it is being slowly
dragged or cropped, unless the graphic is so large that PageMaker cannot
store a color representation in memory.
SlideTimer=2
With a range from 1-120, this setting determines the speed of the slide
show feature (continuous display of successive pages using Shift + "Go to
page..."). The default of 2 matches the slide speed of PageMaker 3.0. To
stop the slide show, click the left mouse button.
DisplayMarks=0
Determines the Story Editor default for the display of paragraph marks and
other nonprinting characters. The initial default is 0 (No). Enter 1 to
change that default.
StyleBar=1
Determines the Story Editor default for the display of the style bar. The
initial default is 1 (Yes). Enter 0 to change that default.
PM4LinkPath=[Enter a path here, such as C:\MYLINK;H:\NETLINK;]
Determines where PageMaker will look if a linked file cannot be found.
Enter a path for directories where linked files would commonly be stored.
Maximize=0
Determines whether the PageMaker window comes up full screen (1) or not (0).
MarginGuideRGB=255 128 255
This default RGB (Red Green Blue) setting turns the margin guides pink for
color monitors.
NOTE: This display entry may not affect display margin guide display of
high-end video cards such as Sigma VGA Legend (1024x768 256 colors) and
Orchid Pro Designer II (1024x768 256 colors).
RulerGuideRGB=0 255 255
This default RGB setting turns ruler guides cyan for color monitors.
ColumnGuideRGB=128 128 255
This default RGB setting turns column guides blue for color monitors.
FloorRGB=255 255 128
This default RGB setting turns the background for the "Fit in world" view
(Ctrl + Shift + W) yellow for color monitors.
(Note: The range for RGB values is 0-255.)

7. DISPLAY ISSUES
==================================
This section describes some of the interesting subtleties about the way
PageMaker displays color, text, and graphics.
7.1 SUBSTITUTING COLORS
If you have an EGA or VGA display, PageMaker will dither fill colors to
approximate their printed appearance. That is, it will remove color
pixels to create the effect of a lighter shade, rather than actually
lightening the color. However, in the case of light-colored text or
lines, PageMaker substitutes the closest available solid color instead of
dithering, thus ensuring that the text or lines remain visible on the
screen. Neither dithering nor color substitution will affect the
appearance of the printed output.
Also, Windows device drivers for low-resolution color printers, such as
dot-matrix printers with color ribbons and some inkjet printers, typically
cannot print dithered colors for text, lines, or bitmaps. Consequently,
these items are printed using the nearest solid color--including
white--available to the driver and/or the printer.
7.2 SCREEN FONTS IN STORY VIEW
In story view, you may not always be able to display the font you select
from the "Preferences" dialog box's "Story view: Font" list. This option
lists the fonts your printer can print, not necessarily the fonts your
screen can display. The Story Editor, however, uses installed screen
fonts, not printer fonts, to display text. If you have not installed a
screen font corresponding to the printer font you select in "Preferences,"
PageMaker substitutes your selection with an available screen font. (For
more information on screen fonts and printer fonts, refer to pages 52-53
in the Reference Manual.)
7.3 SWITCHING A GRAPHIC FOR HIGH-RESOLUTION DISPLAY
When forcing a screen redraw (by switching from "Fit in window" to "Actual
size," for example), you can display graphics at high resolution by
holding down the Alt and Shift keys as the screen begins to redraw. This
feature works only when "Normal" is selected for "Detailed graphics" in
the "Preferences" dialog box.
7.4 PASTING COLOR BITMAPS
As a rule, import color bitmaps into PageMaker (using "Place..." or "Import...") rather than transferring them through the Windows Clipboard. Color data is frequently lost from pasted bitmaps.
When pasting color bitmaps to other programs, keep these points in mind:
There is no correlation between the size of a color bitmap in PageMaker 4.0 and the size of the same bitmap pasted from PageMaker into another program.
The size of color bitmaps changes when cut or copied from PageMaker and pasted into other programs, depending on your "Detailed graphics" setting in the "Preferences" dialog box. When displayed at "High resolution," a graphic copied from PageMaker will be two to three times larger when pasted into another program than it is when copied at "Normal" or "Gray out."
==================================
8. PRINTING
==================================
This section describes a few of the interesting complications in the interface between PageMaker and Windows, as well as alerting you to issues with specific printers.
8.1 WINDOWS SCALING VERSUS PAGEMAKER SCALING
The "Scaling" option in PageMaker's "Print" dialog box will not override
the scaling option set in the Control Panel for the Windows PostScript
driver. Instead, the two scaling values are multiplied: 50% x 50%, for
example, would result in a scaling value of 25%. To ensure 100% printing
size, make sure that both settings are 100%.
8.2 COPYING A PUBLICATION PRINTED TO FILE
When using the DOS "Copy" command to copy your publication's print-to-disk
file, be sure to use the /B (for binary) switch (for instance: "COPY
OUTPUT.PRN /B LPT1:"). This switch is especially important when printing
to a PCL printer; if you don't use it, only part of the publication can be
printed.
8.3 TILING TO HP LASERJET PRINTERS
If you want to tile a publication and print to a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet
printer, add the line "Options=11" to the "[Printer,port]" section of your
WIN.INI file using Windows SysEdit or Notepad. For instance, if your HP
LaserJet III is assigned to your LPT1 port, you would search for a section
called "[HPPCL5A,LPT1]" in your WIN.INI and add Options=11 directly
underneath it. Then save your WIN.INI, exit, and restart Windows so that
this change can take effect.
This setting prevents the driver from printing text off the edge of the
page, thereby leaving plenty of overlap room for tile assembly.
"Options=11" may also improve the appearance of text that is tiled and
rotated, but characters might still overlap.
8.4 MARGIN SETTINGS FOR QMS COLORSCRIPT PRINTERS
A QMS ColorScript printer cannot print outside a top margin of .83 inches
and a bottom margin of 1.25 inches. When printing to this printer, make
sure that the area of the page you want to print does not exceed these
limits, or only a portion of the page will be printed.
8.5 VARIANCES IN FILL DENSITIES
When you use PageMaker's fills (available from the "Fill" command in the
Element menu) and print to an imagesetter, you may find that the shading
percentages in the printed output are off by as much as 10%. This
periodic inaccuracy is caused by limitations in the Windows printer drivers.
8.6 PRINTING BOOKED PUBLICATIONS
If you print with "Reverse order" checked in the "Print" dialog box,
PageMaker will not automatically renumber the pages of booked
publications--even if an auto renumbering option is selected in the "Book
publication list" dialog box.
To have PageMaker automatically renumber pages as well as print in
last-to-first order:
1. With auto renumbering option selected in the "Book publication list"
dialog box, choose either "Create TOC..." or "Create index..." Either of
these operations will cause PageMaker to renumber the pages of your booked
publications automatically.
2. Check "Reverse order" in the "Print" dialog box, and click "OK." When
printing, PageMaker will not renumber pages.
WARNING: If a book you are printing contains a Macintosh PageMaker 4.0
publication in the book list, that publication will be automatically
converted to a Windows PageMaker 4.0 publication, overwriting the original
file.
8.7 PRINTING PCL TEMPLATES
Because of the complexity of the PCL templates, you may have difficulty
printing some of them to an HP LaserJet Series II printer that has only
1.5 megabytes of memory. If adding memory or using a different printer is
not an option, you may want to delete certain graphic elements to reduce
the template's complexity.
8.8 CHANGING THE TIMEOUT SETTINGS IN WIN.INI
For faster printing of publications with complex graphics, we recommend
that you edit the following line of WIN.INI to reflect this timeout value:
TransmissionRetryTimeout=900
Then update the Control Panel setting to match this value.
8.9 PREPARING YOUR PUBLICATION FOR HIGH-END COLOR SEPARATION
