- Help is available when you do the following:

- o Select Help from the menu of an object
- o Select Help in a notebook
- o Press F1 in any window that has a Help choice on a menu bar
- o Select Help on the title bar icon of an OS/2* or DOS session
- o Select the Help push button.

- The help you get is determined by what is highlighted when you request help.
-
- For example, if you request help while a menu bar choice is highlighted, you
- get specific information about that choice. If you are in a window, you get
- general or specific information that is related to that window. If you are in
- the help window, you get general information about the menu bar choices and
- menus that are available in the help facility.

- Help is available for:
-
- o pop-up menus
- o title-bar icons
- o entry fields
- o program menu bars
- o push buttons.

- Every help window has a menu bar that contains Services, Options, Help choices.
- For more information about their menu choices, select one of the following
- choices.

- The help window contains a Services menu bar choice. Use the Services menu
- choices to:

- o Look for help information by searching for words or phrases
- o Print help information
- o Copy help information
- o Open a new help window in which you can display another help topic.

- The help window contains an Options menu bar choice. Use the Options menu
- choices to:

- o Display the table of contents (the titles of all help topics)
- o Manage the table of contents (if there is more than one level of help topics)
- o Display a list of the help topics you have viewed
- o Display a list of subdirectories that contain help topics in which you can
- search for a word or phrase
- o Display the last help topic you viewed.

- Every window that has an menu bar has a Help menu bar choice. Use the Help
- menu choices to display the following for the active program:

- o An index of help topics
- o General information about the active window
- o A list and description of keys you can use

- You can also display general information about the help facility.
-
- In the main window of a program, you can also display product information.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for the Help Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- The help window contains the help you requested. The window title reminds you
- which program or object you are using. The title below the menu bar tells you
- which help topic is displayed.

- The menu bar contains Services, Options, and Help menu bar choices. For more
- information, select one of the choices that follows "Related information."
-
- You can press Esc to display a help topic you have viewed previously, or to
- close the help window when there are no other help topics that can be displayed
- again.
-
- You can double-click on the title bar icon or select the Close choice on the
- title bar icon menu to remove the help window without displaying any previous
- help topics.

- When a help topic is displayed, there might be words or phrases that have
- special highlighting.
-
- One type of highlighting in help windows indicates that you can select a word
- or phrase to see additional information, such as a definition or a related help
- topic. If you have not changed any of the default colors for the operating
- system and you have a color display, those words or phrases are green.
-
- Double-click on the word or phrase, or tab to it and press the Enter key.
- After you view the information, press Esc to return to the previous help
- information.
-
- Another type of highlighting in help windows indicates words or phrases that
- were found in a help topic after you selected the Search choice on the Services
- menu in a help window. When the OS/2 operating system is first started and you
- have a color display, those words or phrases have red characters.

- Use the choices on the Services menu to search for, print, or copy help
- information.

- You could also search for a word or phrase in some or all of the help topics of
- the programs that were installed with the operating system or with any program
- you installed later that contained helps (Marked libraries or All libraries).

- You can view more than one help topic at a time by opening a new window.

- You can use Search to find every occurrence of a word or phrase in one or more
- help topics.

- Use the radio buttons in the Search window to indicate where you want to look
- for the word or phrase.

- If you select one of the section or libraries radio buttons, only the text that
- is displayed in help windows is searched. The index entries are not searched.
- You must select the Index radio button to search index entries.

- You can look for a word or phrase in:

- o The help topic that is displayed in the active help window (This section)
- o Selected help topics for the active program (Marked sections)
- o All help topics for the active program (All sections)
- o The text of the index entries for the active program (Index)
- o The help topics in a selected subdirectory that contains help for many
- programs (Marked libraries)
- o The help topics for all installed programs (All libraries).

- Note: In some programs, the Search window is removed from the screen when you
- select Help or press F1. After you have viewed the help information,
- you can redisplay the Search window by selecting Search from the
- Services menu.

- A help library is a group of files that contain help topics for one or more
- programs. A help library is stored in a subdirectory of the OS/2* operating
- system.

- For example, the \OS2\HELP subdirectory of the OS/2 operating system contains
- all help topics for all the programs that were installed when the operating
- system was installed.

- Use the libraries radio buttons to look for a word or phrase in all help topics
- of one or more libraries.

- You can select the This section radio button to look for a word or phrase in
- the help topic that is displayed in the help window. If the word is found, the
- topic is redisplayed in the help window and each occurrence of the word has
- special highlighting.

- You can select the Marked sections, All sections Marked libraries, or All
- libraries radio button to look for a word or phrase in some or all help topics
- for the active program or in the help topics in one or more Help Libraries:
- Description. If the word or phrase is found, a list is displayed in a new
- window. The list identifies all help topics that contain the word or phrase
- you searched for. If you select one of the topics, it is displayed in the help
- window and each occurrence of the word has special highlighting.

- You can search the words of the index entries. If the word or phrase is found,
- a list is displayed in a new window. The list identifies all the index entries
- that contain the word or phrase you searched for. If you select one of the
- index entries, the related help topic is displayed in the help window.

- If the word or phrase you search for is not found, a message window is
- displayed. Select the OK push button to remove the message and return to the
- Search window. You can do another search, or you can remove the Search window
- by double-clicking on title bar icon.

- To search for a word or phrase in one or more help topics:

- 1. Type a word or phrase in the Search for field.

- Search window. You can do another search, or you can remove the Search window

- Type the word or phrase you are looking for.

- You can type an asterisk (*) to substitute for a portion of a word or phrase.

- For example, to look for all words that start with COM, type:

- To look for all words that have COM in the middle of the word, type:

- To look for all words that end in COM, type:

- Because the asterisk can be used as a substitute, you must type a Backslash (\)
- before an asterisk if you want to find an asterisk in a topic. To search for

- Note: When you search the index, it is not necessary to use an asterisk.
- Every occurrence of the characters in the Search for field is found,
- even if the characters are only part of a word in an index entry.

- index entry that contains the three letters COM together. For example, the
- index entries might contain the following words: COMMAND.COM, command, compare,
- computer, decompress, and intercom.

- You must first indicate which help topics to search by marking them in the
- table of contents. If no help topics are marked, the text of the Marked
- sections choice is gray to remind you that you cannot select this radio button.

- When occurrences are found, a list of help topics is displayed. You can select
- one or more of the topics, one at a time, to view them. When a topic is
- displayed, special highlighting indicates each occurrence of the word or
- phrase.

- one or more of the topics, one at a time, to view them. When a topic is
- displayed, special highlighting indicates each occurrence of the word or
- phrase.

- not the content of the panels.

- Select the Marked libraries radio button to find every occurrence of the
- specified word or phrase in the help topics in the selected Help Libraries:

- You must first indicate in which help library you want to search by selecting a
- directory path and file name from the list of help subdirectories in the
- Libraries window. For example, to search the operating system help library,
- you would select \OS2\HELP from the list.

- To mark and search selected libraries of help topics, do the following from any
- help window:

- 1. Select Options
- 2. Select Libraries.
- 3. Select (by highlighting) one or more libraries.
- 4. Select Services.
- 5. Select Search.
- 6. Type a word or phrase in the Search for entry field.
- 7. Select Marked libraries if it is not already selected.
- 8. Select Search.

- of characters you typed in the Search for field.

- The selected radio button in the Search window indicates which help topics are

- This window contains a list of help topics or index entries that contain the
- word, phrase, or group of characters you searched for. The window title
- contains the word or phrase you searched for, unless you searched in the index.
- If you searched in the index, the window title is Index.

- You can select one or more of the help topics or index entries, one at a time.
- When you select a help topic, each occurrence of the word or phrase you
- searched for is indicated by special highlighting. When you select an index
- entry, the related help topic is displayed. The help topic does not contain
- any special highlighting.

- After you view a topic, press Esc to remove the topic and return to the list so
- that you can select another topic or index entry.

- When you have finished viewing topics, you can minimize the window that
- contains the list, or you can double-click on the title-bar icon to close the
- window. You return to the topic that was displayed when you started the
- search.

- Use New window to open one or more new help windows so that you can see more
- than one help topic displayed at the same time.

- Note: New windows are most beneficial when you use them in maximized online
- documents to display more than one topic of the document at the same
- time.

- You can use a new window to display any help topic that you can select from a
- list in another window. For example, you can use a new window to display a
- topic from the Help index window or from a window that is displayed after you
- do a search.
-
- You can use a new window to display a help topic that is related to a word or
- phrase that has special highlighting in the text of a help window. (The
- special highlighting indicates that more information is available, such as a
- related topic or a definition.)
-
- To find out if a topic can be placed in a new window, highlight a topic or
- index entry and select the Services choice on the action bar. If the text of
- the New window choice is gray, you cannot open a new window.
-
- When a new window is first displayed, it covers the help topic in the main help
- window. You can move or size the new window, but only within the boundaries of
- the main help window. You can see some information in each window and can
- scroll in both windows to see the rest of the text.
-
- Sometimes you can minimize a new window so you can redisplay it later. To see
- if you can minimize a new window, select the System Menu icon of the new
- window. If the text of the Minimize choice is gray, you cannot minimize the
- new window.
-
- After you minimize a new window, an icon is displayed at the bottom of the help
- window. Text below the icon indicates which help topic is in the new window.
- The icon is placed behind the help topic that is displayed in the main help
- window. Therefore, you must size the main help window up from the bottom so
- that you can see the icon. To redisplay the new window, select the icon.

- New windows are linked to the main help window. If you close the main help
- window, any new windows you created are also closed. If you close a displayed
- new window, that window is removed and you see the main help window.

- To display a help topic in a new window:
-
- 1. Select a help topic or an index entry by highlighting it.
- 2. Select Services.
- 3. Select New window.

- Use Copy to duplicate the topic in the active help window and place it in the
- clipboard.

- After you copy the topic to the clipboard, you can use an editor with a Paste
- function to move the text from the clipboard into a file that you can edit.

- Note: The clipboard can hold only one block of text at a time. When you copy
- a help topic to the clipboard, any text that is already in the
- clipboard is replaced.

- Use Copy to file to duplicate the topic in the active help window and place it
- in a temporary file named TEXT.TMP in the current directory of the current
- drive.

- You can then edit the temporary file using an editor, such as the OS/2 System
- Editor.

- Warning: When you use Copy to file, the help topic that you are copying
- replaces any information that was previously copied into the TEXT.TMP file.
-
- If you want to have more than one topic in the TEXT.TMP file, use the Append to
- file choice to copy additional topics.

- Use Append to file to copy the topic in the active help window and add it to
- the end of the temporary file named TEXT.TMP in the current directory of the
- current drive.

- When you use this choice, you can copy more than one help topic into a file.

- You can then edit the temporary file using an editor, such as the OS/2 System
- Editor.

- To copy more than one help topic to a file:
-
- 1. Display a topic.
- 2. Select Services.
- 3. Select Copy to file.
- 4. For each additional topic you want in the same file:

- a) Display another topic.
- b) Select Append to file.

- Use the choices on the Options menu to:

- o Manage the display of the table of contents

- or more programs). You can look for a word or phrase in one or all of the
- libraries.

- o Redisplay the previous topic.

- The table of contents for help topics might have only one level of topics. If
- there are no other levels of topics, the text of the choices at the top of the
- Options menu are gray.

- Use Expand one level to display the next level of help topics for the help
- topic that is highlighted in the Contents window.

- at least one more level of help topics that you can display.

- Instead of using Expand one level, you can select the plus sign (+) in front of
- a topic or press the (+) key.

- A program might not have any lower-level help topics.

- Use Expand branch to display all lower levels of help topics for the
- highlighted topic in the Contents window.

- one more level of topics that you can display.

- topic or press the (+) key.

- listed below it that you can remove from display.

- Instead of using Collapse branch, you can select the minus sign (-) in front of
- a topic or press the (-) key.

- Use Collapse all to remove the display of all lower-level entries for all help

- Instead of using Collapse all, you can press Ctrl and Minus (-).

- Use Contents to display the table of contents for the active program. The
- table of contents contains the titles of all help topics.

- You can select one or more of the topics, one at a time, to view them.

- This window contains the table of contents for the active program. The table
- of contents lists the titles of all help topics.

- You can select one or more of the topics, one at a time, to view them.

- After you view a selected topic, press Esc to remove the topic and return to
- the Contents window so you can select another topic.

- After viewing the topics, you can minimize the contents window so you can
- return to it later, or you can close the window. When you close the window,
- you return to the topic you were viewing before the Contents window was
- displayed.

- A program might have more than one level of topics. If so, the list contains
- only the highest level when it is displayed. If a topic contains lower-level
- topics, a plus sign (+) is displayed in a box in front of that topic. Select a
- plus sign (+) to display the lower level of topics for that topic. A minus
- sign (-) indicates that you have displayed all lower-level topics.

- You can use choices on the Options menu to display or remove some or all of the
- lower levels of help topics for one or all help topics. For example, you can
- use the Expand all choice to display every lower-level topic for every help
- topic at one time.

- Use Libraries to display a list of the help libraries that are available.
- These libraries are defined by the help environment variable in the CONFIG.SYS

- CONFIG.SYS. For example, the list contains \OS2\HELP, the directory path for
- the operating system help library.

- In an OS/2 and DOS session, the following choices might be available:

- o Switch from DOS window to DOS full screen
- o Change the size of the characters that are displayed in active session
- o Turn scrolling on or off
- o Mark text or graphics for copying or pasting to the OS/2 clipboard
- o Copy marked text or graphics to the OS/2 clipboard
- o Copy the text or graphics from the OS/2 clipboard to the active session
- o Change the settings for programs that run in a DOS session.

- Use Restore to change the size of a window from full-screen back to its
- original size, or to change an icon back to its original window size.

- Use Size to make a window larger or smaller.

- 1. Move the mouse to a border of the window until the mouse pointer changes to
- a double arrow.

- Use Close to remove the selected window. Sometimes when you close a window,
- you close the object that window is related to. For example, if you close the

- o Switch to an open object
- o Close an open object.
