- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Help for the Trace Formatter ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Use the OS/2 System Trace Formatter to determine which trace points have been
- logged by an OS/2* system. The Trace Formatter also processes the data
- associated with those trace points.
-
- The Trace Formatter uses unformatted trace event data to produce formatted
- output describing information logged by the system. You can then save the
- trace data in a file. Major and minor codes tell you from where in the system
- the logged information came. The Process ID (PID) indicates which process
- caused the event to be logged.
-
- This utility is intended to be used with the assistance of your Service
- Representative. A Service Representative can help you set up a system for
- system trace, start system trace, and run the Trace Formatter to capture and
- save the trace events in a file. You can then send the events that have been
- saved in a file to your Service Representative for analysis.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Configuring Your System ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Your system must be properly configured to perform system trace. Your
- CONFIG.SYS file must include either the TRACE= or TRACEBUF= statements. If you
- specify TRACE=ON in the CONFIG.SYS file, the system begins logging trace events
- from start-up time. If you specify TRACE=OFF in the CONFIG.SYS file, you must
- start tracing by entering the TRACE command at a command prompt.
-
- If you specify the TRACEBUF= statement in the CONFIG.SYS file, you indicate the
- amount of space the system reserves to hold trace events. You can specify a
- size in the range of 1K to 63K. If you do not include a TRACEBUF statement,
- the system uses a default buffer size of 4K. Refer to the TRACE Utility in the
- OS/2 Command Reference for more information on these statements and their
- syntax.
-
- Note: It is recommended that you not include these statements in the
- CONFIG.SYS file if you will not be using system trace.
-
- You can use the Trace Formatter on a system that is not configured for system
- trace. However, you can use as input only unformatted system trace data that
- has been previously saved in a file.
-
-

- previously stored in a file.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Help for Retrieve System Trace Buffer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Use Retrieve system trace buffer to retrieve and then format the data that is
- currently in the system trace buffer. When this operation is performed, a copy
- is made of the data in the system trace data buffer, and the system trace data
- buffer is cleared. The Trace Formatter then holds the only copy of the new
- trace data. If you will need the data at a later time, save it with the Save
- unformatted data choice on the Save as menu.
-
- You can select this choice only if your system is currently configured for
- system trace.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Help for Save As ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Use the choices on the Save as menu to store the trace data to a file. You can

-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Message: Not Logging Data ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The system is not configured for system trace. Your CONFIG.SYS file does not
- contain either the TRACE= or TRACEBUF= statements. If you wish to use system
- trace, you will need to add one or both of these statements to your CONFIG.SYS
- file and restart your system.
-
- Because the system is not configured for system trace, the Trace Formatter can
- accept only trace data that has been previously stored to a file. To obtain
- data previously stored to a file, select the Open choice from the File pull
- down. For further information, refer to the Command Reference.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Message: No Data Retrieved ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- You attempted to retrieve system trace data from either the system trace buffer
- or a file, and there was no data to retrieve or the attempt failed.
-
- If you start the Trace Formatter without specifying a file name, the Trace
- Formatter attempts to retrieve data from the system trace buffer.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Message: Print Started ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Your request to print has completed successfully. The Print ID number can be
- used to send the print job to the Print Manager.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Question: Do You Want to Exit? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- If you select the Yes pushbutton, the Trace Formatter ends. Before you do
- this, you might want to save any data that has been retrieved from the system
- trace buffer. If you save this data to a file, you can format the data later.
-
- If you select the No pushbutton, the Trace Formatter resumes.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Question: Overwrite Data? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- If you select the OK pushbutton, the Trace Formatter attempts to replace the
- current data with data from the source you specified. The current data will be
- lost unless you have previously stored it to file. If you select the Cancel
- pushbutton, the current data remains untouched and the retrieve function does
- not continue. *********
