- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Using SYSLOG ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The following are some important facts to know about the SYSLOG Utility.
-
- o You must include "RUN = LOGDAEM.EXE" and "DEVICE = LOG.SYS" statements in the
- CONFIG.SYS file to use SYSLOG. These two commands along with specifying
- parameters allow the System Logging Service to retrieve log data and keep the
- data in specific error logging files. Refer to the Command Reference for
- more information about these commands.
- o The "RUN = LOGDAEM.EXE" command controls the start of the Logging Daemon
- process. You need to specify, in the CONFIG.SYS file, the path and file name
- where the error logging data is to be placed. This file in the CONFIG.SYS
- file is called the local error log file and requires the /E parameter. For
- example, to specify C:\OS2\SYSTEM as the path for the error log file
- LOG0001.DAT, type the following in the CONFIG.SYS file:
-
- RUN=C:\OS2\SYSTEM\LOGDAEM.EXE /E:C:\OS2\SYSTEM\LOG0001.DAT
-
- o The "DEVICE = LOG.SYS" command activates the System Logging Service device
- driver. For example:
-
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\LOG.SYS
-
- o The formatted contents of the file are displayed a record at a time in the
- main window of the utility. This area is divided into two logical parts:
-
- - System area - The area of the window that contains information supplied by
- the system and the OS/2 Error Logging Facility. This includes: record ID,
- date, time, status, originator's name, and process name.
- - Record defined area - The area that is used to format variable data as
- specified by the formatting template. If you specified no templates for a
- given record and the record is not one of the record IDs recognized by the
- utility, the variable data is displayed in hexadecimal on the left side of
- the window and in ASCII on the right.
-
- o If the current system log file has no records, an information panel is
- displayed informing you of the log file status. Otherwise, the last record
- in the current error log file is displayed.
-
- If the log file has records in it, you can select the Next Rec or Prev Rec
- pushbutton to move through the log file.
