- FirstMail Installation For DOS and Macintosh
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Steps required for FirstMail installation.
-
- (1) Install FirstMail for DOS.
- (2) Configure your NetWare server for Macintosh access.
- (3) Install FirstMail for Macintosh.
-
- The following sections describe these steps chronologically.
-
- FirstMail Installation (DOS)
-
- The following instructions will help you to install and
- configure the FirstMail application. These step-by-step
- procedures will allow you to quickly and easily configure
- a basic installation to support electronic mail.
-
-
- Installing FirstMail (DOS)
-
- * The Basic MHS installation process will automatically
- install the FirstMail for DOS and FirstMail for MAC
- files in the SYS:\PUBLIC directory on your server.
- * Verify that your MV variable points to the
- <Server\Vol:Path> where the \MHS\MAIL\USERS directory
- can be found.
- * Verify the \MHS\EXE directory is in the system path.
- * FirstMail's default configuration should be adequate for
- most purposes. If you experience problems or find that
- changes need to be made, use the Fmconfig.exe program
- located in the \PUBLIC directory to alter the default
- settings. Do not attempt this unless there is a reason
- to believe the default settings are incorrect for your
- particular configuration. The utility 'Unconfig.exe'
- will remove all configuration settings and allow you to
- re-configure FirstMail with the BasicMHS default
- settings. This should only be done when all else fails.
-
-
- The following is an example of changes which may be required
- should you experience problems with FirstMail.
-
- Global Configuration of FirstMail (DOS)
-
- * Change to the \PUBLIC directory.
- * Run "FMconfig.exe"
- * Select the option "NetWare MHS/SMF Interface".
- * Make the following changes to the respective options:
-
- o Default work group: Enter the NGM default workgroup
- for this server. {EXAMPLE:
- Sherwood.lionheart}
- Note: This field is not
- mandatory in Basic MHS
- o Use SMFSEND?: Enter "N".
- o SMF-71 available?: Enter "Y" .
- o UTC time value: Enter your offset from GMT in
- the form -XXXX
- {EXAMPLE: -0800}
- o MHS path for DOS: This will default to your
- %MV% variable.
-
- * Press <Ctrl-Enter> and select "Y" to the prompt
- "Accept this data?".
- * Select "N" and press <Enter> to bypass registration of
- FirstMail with Basic MHS. This can be done using the
- Basic MHS Admin program, if desired.
- * Select "X" to exit and save your configurations.
-
- NOTE: The System Administrator will be required to add
- FIRST as the NGM users preferred application from
- within ADMIN if this is desirable. By default, MHS
- is the preferred application.
-
- Configuration of Personal Preferences for FirstMail (DOS)
-
- * Each user has the option to select personal
- configurations for FirstMail.
- * The following will be the basic configuration options
- which a user may wish to alter.
- * Login to the server as a registered NGM user.
- * Run "Mail.exe".
- * Highlight the "Preferences" menu option and press <Enter>.
- * Highlight the "General Preferences" menu option and press
- <Enter>.
-
- o Personal name: Enter your full name here.
- {EXAMPLE: Robin Hood}.
-
- o Work directory: If you specify a directory in this
- field, then FirstMail will
- automatically change to that
- directory every time you run the
- program. This can be useful if you
- tend to store extracted messages or
- mail-related files in a particular
- place.
-
- o Press <Ctrl-Enter> and select "Y" to accept changes.
-
- * Highlight the "NetWare MHS/SMF settings" menu option and
- press <Enter>.
- * Make the following changes to the respective options:
-
- o My SMF/MHS user name: This is your full Email
- address.
- {EXAMPLE:
- Robin@Sherwood.lionheart}
-
- o My SMF/MHS mailbox name: This is the name of your
- MHS mail box in the
- directory
- %MV%\MHS\MAIL\USERS.
- {EXAMPLE: Robin}
-
- o My application name: This should be "FIRST" if
- you have defined "FIRST"
- as the users "Preferred
- Application" from within
- the Admin program. By
- default this is MHS.
-
- o Scan the MHS user dir?: Select "Y". (This will
- allow scanning for mail
- in the MHS mailbox even
- if your application name
- is different. EX: FIRST)
-
- o Press <Ctrl-Enter> and select "Y" to accept changes.
-
- * This is the minimum configuration required to
- successfully use FirstMail to generate Email messages.
- For information concerning "Personal Preferences" refer
- to the "Users.txt" manual.
-
-
- FirstMail Installation (MAC)
-
- To perform the FirstMail for Macintosh installation, follow the
- instructions above for "Installing FirstMail)" and "Global
- Configuration of FirstMail" for DOS. Once FirstMail has been
- installed and configured on the NetWare file server you can
- continue with the following installation procedures.
- Installation of the FirstMail for Macintosh software assumes
- the following NetWare configurations have been completed.
-
- * NetWare for MAC has been correctly installed on the
- NetWare server.
- * The correct Appletalk Zone and NetWare file server have
- been configured on your Macintosh system.
- * You are attached to the NetWare server from the
- Macintosh as a registered NGM user.
- * For information regarding any of the above
- configurations, please refer to the following manuals:
-
- o "NetWare for Macintosh - Installation and Maintenance"
- (Novell P.N. - 100-000914-002)

-
-
- Installing FirstMail/MAC
-
- * The Basic MHS installation has copied the file Mac-Mail.exe
- to the \PUBLIC directory. Perform the following steps in
- order to copy FirstMail for MAC from the NetWare server to
- a Macintosh.
-
- 1. From the \PUBLIC directory type Mac-Mail.exe. There
- will now be a file named FirstMai.sea in the
- \PUBLIC directory. This is a Macintosh self
- extracting archive. From the Macintosh the file will
- be recognized as FirstMail1.1.sea.
- 2. Login from the Macintosh to your NetWare server.
- 3. Copy the file FirstMail1.1.sea from the server to
- the local Macintosh hard drive.
- 4. Double click on the file FirstMail1.1.sea. This
- will generate a new folder on the Macintosh called
- FirstMail1.1. This new folder contains all
- FirstMail for MAC files. (Repeat steps 2 thru 4 for
- every Macinstosh user that wishes to use FirstMail
- for MAC.
-
- * The System Administrator will want to verify that the
- following configurations are set by running the
- FirstMail Config program. The System Administrator must
- be logged into the NetWare server as a supervisor
- equivalent in order to run FirstMail Config.
-
- o General Setup:
-
- Path to base of NetWare MHS/SMF directory tree:
- (Ex: If the MHS mailboxes are stored on Vol1 of
- Mailserver1, this field would contain "
- Mailserver1.Vol1: ")
-
- o NetWare SMF (MHS) Setup:
-
- Are you using an SMF-71 transport? (This box must
- be checked)
-
- FirstMail will store this information along with the
- DOS configuration information in the NetWare bindery
- where it can be accessed by all FirstMail users.
