  12. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  14. For information on using FirstMail, review the online 
  15. documentation in file USER.TXT, which is installed in 
  16. sys:\public.

  18. The following FirstMail files have been installed in the 
  19. sys:\public directory on your server.

  34.     FirstMail Installation For DOS and Macintosh 
  35. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  37. Steps required for FirstMail installation.
  38.  
  39.    (1) Install FirstMail for DOS.
  40.    (2) Configure your NetWare server for Macintosh access.
  41.    (3) Install FirstMail for Macintosh.
  42.  
  43. The following sections describe these steps chronologically.
  44.  
  45. FirstMail Installation (DOS)
  46.  
  47. The following instructions will help you to install and
  48. configure the FirstMail application. These step-by-step
  49. procedures will allow you to quickly and easily configure
  50. a basic installation to support electronic mail.
  51.

  53. Installing FirstMail (DOS)
  54.  
  55. *     The Basic MHS installation process will automatically 
  56.       install the FirstMail for DOS and FirstMail for MAC 
  57.       files in the SYS:\PUBLIC directory on your server.
  58. *     Verify that your MV variable points to the 
  59.       <Server\Vol:Path> where the \MHS\MAIL\USERS directory 
  60.       can be found.
  61. *     Verify the \MHS\EXE directory is in the system path.
  62. *     FirstMail's default configuration should be adequate for 
  63.       most purposes.  If you experience problems or find that 
  64.       changes need to be made, use the Fmconfig.exe program 
  65.       located in the \PUBLIC directory to alter the default 
  66.       settings.  Do not attempt this unless there is a reason 
  67.       to believe the default settings are incorrect for your 
  68.       particular configuration. The utility 'Unconfig.exe' 
  69.       will remove all configuration settings and allow you to 
  70.       re-configure FirstMail with the BasicMHS default 
  71.       settings. This should only be done when all else fails.

  74. The following is an example of changes which may be required 
  75. should you experience problems with FirstMail.
  76.  
  77. Global Configuration of FirstMail (DOS)
  78.  
  79. *     Change to the \PUBLIC directory.
  80. *     Run "FMconfig.exe"
  81. *     Select the option "NetWare MHS/SMF Interface".
  82. *     Make the following changes to the respective options:
  83.  
  84.       o    Default work group:   Enter the NGM default workgroup
  85.                                  for this server. {EXAMPLE: 
  86.                                  Sherwood.lionheart}
  87.                                  Note: This field is not 
  88.                                  mandatory in Basic MHS
  89.       o    Use SMFSEND?:         Enter "N".
  90.       o    SMF-71 available?:    Enter "Y" .
  91.       o    UTC time value:       Enter your offset from GMT in 
  92.                                  the form  -XXXX
  93.                                  {EXAMPLE: -0800}
  94.       o    MHS path for DOS:     This will default to your 
  95.                                  %MV% variable.
  96.  
  97. *     Press <Ctrl-Enter> and select "Y" to the prompt 
  98.         "Accept this data?".
  99. *     Select "N" and press <Enter> to bypass registration of 
  100.         FirstMail with Basic MHS.  This can be done using the 
  101.         Basic MHS Admin program, if desired.
  102. *     Select "X" to exit and save your configurations.
  103.  
  104.       NOTE: The System Administrator will be required to add 
  105.             FIRST as the NGM users preferred application from 
  106.             within ADMIN if this is desirable. By default, MHS 
  107.             is the preferred application.
  108.  
  109. Configuration of Personal Preferences for FirstMail (DOS)
  110.  
  111. *     Each user has the option to select personal 
  112.       configurations for FirstMail.
  113. *     The following will be the basic configuration options 
  114.       which a user may wish to alter.
  115. *     Login to the server as a registered NGM user.
  116. *     Run "Mail.exe".
  117. *     Highlight the "Preferences" menu option and press <Enter>.
  118. *     Highlight the "General Preferences" menu option and press 
  119.       <Enter>.
  120.  
  121.       o    Personal name:  Enter your full name here.
  122.                            {EXAMPLE: Robin Hood}.
  123.  
  124.       o    Work directory: If you specify a directory in this 
  125.                            field, then FirstMail will 
  126.                            automatically change to that 
  127.                            directory every time you run the 
  128.                            program. This can be useful if you 
  129.                            tend to store extracted messages or 
  130.                            mail-related files in a particular
  131.                            place.
  132.  
  133.       o    Press <Ctrl-Enter> and select "Y" to accept changes.
  134.  
  135. *     Highlight the "NetWare MHS/SMF settings" menu option and 
  136.       press <Enter>.
  137. *     Make the following changes to the respective options:
  138.  
  139.       o    My SMF/MHS user name:     This is your full Email 
  140.                                      address.
  141.                                      {EXAMPLE:  
  142.                                      Robin@Sherwood.lionheart}
  143.  
  144.       o    My SMF/MHS mailbox name:  This is the name of your 
  145.                                      MHS mail box in the 
  146.                                      directory 
  147.                                      %MV%\MHS\MAIL\USERS.
  148.                                      {EXAMPLE: Robin}
  149.  
  150.       o    My application name:      This should be "FIRST" if 
  151.                                      you have defined "FIRST" 
  152.                                      as the users "Preferred
  153.                                      Application" from within 
  154.                                      the Admin program. By 
  155.                                      default this is MHS.
  156.  
  157.       o    Scan the MHS user dir?:   Select "Y". (This will 
  158.                                      allow scanning for mail 
  159.                                      in the MHS mailbox even 
  160.                                      if your application name 
  161.                                      is different. EX: FIRST)
  162.  
  163.       o    Press <Ctrl-Enter> and select "Y" to accept changes.
  164.  
  165. *     This is the minimum configuration required to 
  166.       successfully use FirstMail to generate Email messages. 
  167.       For information concerning "Personal Preferences" refer 
  168.       to the "Users.txt" manual.

  171. FirstMail Installation (MAC)
  172.  
  173. To perform the FirstMail for Macintosh installation, follow the
  174. instructions above for "Installing FirstMail)" and "Global 
  175. Configuration of FirstMail" for DOS. Once FirstMail has been 
  176. installed and configured on the NetWare file server you can 
  177. continue with the following installation procedures. 
  178. Installation of the FirstMail for Macintosh software assumes 
  179. the following NetWare configurations have been completed.
  180.  
  181. *     NetWare for MAC has been correctly installed on the 
  182.       NetWare server.
  183. *     The correct Appletalk Zone and NetWare file server have 
  184.       been configured on your Macintosh system.
  185. *     You are attached to the NetWare server from the 
  186.       Macintosh as a registered NGM user.
  187. *     For information regarding any of the above 
  188.       configurations, please refer to the following manuals:
  189.  
  190.       o    "NetWare for Macintosh - Installation and Maintenance"
  191.            (Novell P.N. - 100-000914-002)
  192.       o    "NetWare for Macintosh - Basic Operations"

  196. Installing FirstMail/MAC
  197.  
  198. *     The Basic MHS installation has copied the file Mac-Mail.exe
  199.       to the \PUBLIC directory.  Perform the following steps in 
  200.       order to copy FirstMail for MAC from the NetWare server to
  201.       a Macintosh.
  202.  
  203.       1.   From the \PUBLIC directory type Mac-Mail.exe. There 
  204.            will now be a file named FirstMai.sea in the 
  205.            \PUBLIC directory. This is a Macintosh self 
  206.            extracting archive. From the Macintosh the file will 
  207.            be recognized as FirstMail1.1.sea.                    
  208.       2.   Login from the Macintosh to your NetWare server.
  209.       3.   Copy the file FirstMail1.1.sea from the server to 
  210.            the local Macintosh hard drive.
  211.       4.   Double click on the file FirstMail1.1.sea. This 
  212.            will generate a new folder on the Macintosh called 
  213.            FirstMail1.1. This new folder contains all 
  214.            FirstMail for MAC files. (Repeat steps 2 thru 4 for
  215.            every Macinstosh user that wishes to use FirstMail 
  216.            for MAC.
  217.  
  218. *     The System Administrator will want to verify that the 
  219.       following configurations are set by running the 
  220.       FirstMail Config program. The System Administrator must 
  221.       be logged into the NetWare server as a supervisor 
  222.       equivalent in order to run FirstMail Config.
  223.  
  224.       o   General Setup:
  225.  
  226.           Path to base of NetWare MHS/SMF directory tree:
  227.           (Ex: If the MHS mailboxes are stored on Vol1 of 
  228.           Mailserver1, this field would contain " 
  229.           Mailserver1.Vol1: ")
  230.  
  231.       o   NetWare SMF (MHS) Setup:
  232.  
  233.           Are you using an SMF-71 transport?  (This box must 
  234.           be checked)
  235.  
  236.           FirstMail will store this information along with the 
  237.           DOS configuration information in the NetWare bindery 
  238.           where it can be accessed by all FirstMail users.

  241. Configuration of Personal Preferences for FirstMail/MAC
  242.  
  243. *     Each user has the option to select personal configurations
  244.       for FirstMail. The following will be the basic 
  245.       configuration options which a user may wish to alter.
  246. *     Open the "FirstMail 1.1" folder.
  247. *     Double Click on the "FirstMail" icon to begin FirstMail.
  248. *     Highlight the "Main Folder" and click on OPEN.
  249. *     Open the "FILE" menu and highlight the "Preferences"
  250.       option. Move to the "General Preferences" menu option 
  251.       and select.
  252.  
  253.       o    Personal name:  Enter your full name here.  
  254.            {EXAMPLE: Robin Hood}
  255.       o    Click on any options you wish to enforce.
  256.       o    Click on OK to save settings.
  257.  
  258. *     Open the "FILE" menu and highlight the "Preferences" 
  259.       option. Move to the "NetWare SMF (MHS) settings...."  
  260.       menu option and select.
  261. *     Make the following changes to the respective options:
  262.  
  263.       o    SMF/MHS user name:       This is your full Email 
  264.                                     address.
  265.                                     {EXAMPLE:  
  266.                                     Robin@Sherwood.lionheart}

  268.       o    SMF/MHS mailbox name:    This is the name of your 
  269.                                     MHS mail box in the 
  270.                                     directory

  274.       o    My SMF application name: This should be "FIRST" if

  281.       o    Scan the MHS app dir for new mail?  Check this box. 
  282.                                     This will allow scanning 
  283.                                     for mail in the MHS mailbox 
  284.                                     even if your application
  285.                                     name is different.
  286.                                     (EX: FIRST)

  288.       o    Click on OK to save settings.
  289.  
  290. *     This is the minimum configuration required to 
  291.       successfully use FirstMail for the MAC to generate Email 
  292.       messages. For information concerning "Personal 
  293.       Preferences" refer to the MAC manuals: "FirstMail Manual 
  294.       (1,2,3,4)".
