- Basic Principlesby Paul Hsieh (aka "Lucifer")
-
- Don't stand still. Especially when being attacked. The reason isobvious.
- A moving target is harder to hit than a stationary one.
- You must master moving and shooting at the same time."Camping" is not
- a really great strategy, because most good player scan always maneuver
- into a good attacking position against any stationary target no matter
- how well they are placed. Remember that if you can see them, they can
- see you. If you've ever played against somebody who just seems to be
- in destructable, then no doubt s/he wiggles his/her butt. Don't run in
- straight lines. Most good players can aim and hit an intersect shot
- with a straight line almost as easily as hitting a stationary target.
-
- Wiggle a little in your movements. Unexpected paths are also a good idea
- as players often depend on correctly guessing on where you are going.
- For example, doubling back so that you briefly pass face to face with
- your opponent is an occasionally viable strategy. Don't ignore your
- health/defence status. You're going to get hit eventually, so you must
- do what you can to survive an enemy barrage.I usually go for health first,
- then armor. When I am fully loaded, I don't hesitate to attack people
- even at point blank range with my rockets. Don't hug walls.
- The rocket is a proximity damage weapon. Meaning that it doesn't have
- to hit you to cause damage. A typical strategy with the rocket is to
- shoot at the closest wall to the enemy so that the explosion will cause
- sufficient partial damage (with as many blows as neccessary) to finish you.
-
- If you are not hugging a wall, your enemy cannot exploit this strategy
- and must aim precisely to even scratch you. Even running directly at
- your assailant, then right past him/her is likely to be a better
- defensive maneuver. Remember that the game doesn't take into account
- the number of times you die, but rather the number of times you frag
- your opponents..So it can pay to be overly adventurous and attack,
- even if it is not. clear who will win. Playing too defensive a strategy,
- is in fact the worst way to play Quake, since you wont score that way.
- Be aware of where everything is on the level, and that means keeping track
- of thing dynamically too. If you mutual with someone, that usually means
- that your weapon packs will be lying there (for a few seconds anyways;
- before somebody else snags them.) But also be aware of the secret rooms
- and caves on each level and how to activate them. If you are under water
- do you have a good sense for how long you can stay before needing to
- surface? That is to say if you suddenly take damage, will you know that
- it is because its somebody behind/above you or because you need to get
- some air? Use dark areas to hide in (temporarily of course.)
-
- (Quick quiz: Did you know that it is possible to accumulate almost 400
- health on one of the shareware levels? If you know which level it is,
- then you have a reasonable grasp of the mazes.) Be aware of all standard
- tricks. You can jump very high by aiming the rocket launcher into the
- ground, and shooting while pressing the jump key. This can allow you to
- stand on overhead girders. If you jump on top of somebody who is
- stantionary they cannot see you, but you can still shoot straight down.
-
- Grenades bounce off walls, be sure to use this against unseen enemies.
- You can only be seen either above or below water, so it is actually
- aneffective cover for a sneak attack. In black areas, all your
- weapon's tips will glow, betraying your presence, except the axe.
-
- If you need to hide, be sure to switch to the axe before seeking the
- darkness for shelter. Be sure you know how to use the bonus powerups
- effectively. The quad damage is best used with either the super nail
- gun if youwant to play it safe, or the rocket launcher for long distances.
-
- Invulnerability is great with the rocket (if you've got lots of rockets.)
-
- Invisibility is cool, but with your eyes visible, its far from 100%
- effective. Invisibility doesn't last very long so I usually run to a
- crouded area as quickly as possible, and simply attack as normal.
-
- It works best for you as an extra defence, though it does have surprise
- value for those that are not alert.Be devious! I am especially aweful
- when I am talking to my opponents. I start complaining about changing
- the level, then camp out near the end and start pinging off my victims
- one by one. :) But even in regular game play. You might announce your
- presence by shooting at them with the single shot gun, stop, then turn
- around and run. Then when you round a corner, switch weapons to your
- rocket launcher and and let them have it when they come in pursuit.
-
- Doubling back when you pass through a dark area can be quite an
- effectivesurprise against the unprepared persuer. Be familiar with the
- weapons. The single shotgun and nail gun are inferior to their obvious
- counterparts, and using them is akin to bringing a knife to a gunfight.
-
- The double shot gun is best used atvery short range, but its long reload
- time make it ineffective againsta wiley opponent who can play a little
- dodge ball. The super nail gun is a great weapon for unbalanced fighting.
-
- A continuous 2 second stream will slice through anyone's armour. I find
- it an effective choice when my opponents are using the rocket launcher
- but don't aim too well. The rocket launcher is my bread and butter weapon.
- One shot kills anyone without armor, two shots for everyone else.
-
- As mentioned earlier, it is also good for proximity damage. If an enemy is
- near a wall, you need only hit the wall to deliver damage.
-
- Finally the grenade launcher. I ordinarily use this weapon to lay a
- mine field while I am retreating, however is a good offensive weapon
- against enemies that are trapped in, or compelled to stay in a single area.
